The Eucharist

The Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

Sunday 23 August 2020 11.00am Welcome to Cathedral

Set on the of the in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in , this building has been a constant witness in a place of change. The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a , it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie. With and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation the Priory became a church and it remains so for the people of . In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark. As well as a place of constant witness to our faith in Jesus Christ, this church has a momentous and proud history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, , and Charles Dickens. In the 20th century this cathedral was at the heart of the new movement in theology termed ‘South Bank Religion’. This movement asked challenging questions of people about faith in the modern age which continue to be explored at Southwark Cathedral which describes itself as ‘inclusive: faithful: radical’. Whatever has brought you here today, you are most welcome.Become part of the life here if you can; it will change your life as you encounter with us our living God. — Organist Stephen Disley, Assistant Director of Music The Lay Clerks of Southwark Cathedral Setting Mass for three voices · William Byrd Voluntary

We stand for the entrance of the clergy and altar party.

God be gracious to us and bless us, and make your face shine upon us: Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy.

May your ways be known on the earth, your saving power among the nations: Christ, have mercy. All Christ, have mercy.

You, Lord, have made known your salvation, and reveal your justice in the sight of the nations: Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy.

4 The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon and forgiveness of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

Gloria

Sung by the Lay Clerks.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

5 For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect

Let us pray.

God of glory, the end of our searching, help us to lay aside all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom, and to give all that we have to gain the pearl beyond all price, through our Saviour Jesus Christ who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

We sit for the readings

6 First Reading Isaiah 51. 1–6

Read by Caroline Bennett.

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, but I blessed him and made him many. For the Lord will comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song. Listen to me, my people, and give heed to me, my nation; for a teaching will go out from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples. I will bring near my deliverance swiftly, my salvation has gone out and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me, and for my arm they hope.

7 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and those who live on it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be for ever, and my deliverance will never be ended.

This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God.

Psalm Psalm 138

Sung by the Lay Clerks.

I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart : even before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy Name, because of thy loving kindness and truth : for thou hast magnified thy Name, and thy Word, above all things.

When I called upon thee, thou heardest me : and enduedst my soul with much strength.

8 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord : for they have heard the words of thy mouth.

Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord : that great is the glory of the Lord.

For though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly : as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me : thou shalt stretch forth thy hand upon the furiousness of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

The Lord shall make good his loving kindness toward me : yea, thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever; despise not then the works of thine own hands.

9 Second Reading Romans 11. 1–2a, 29–32

Read by Matthew Peck.

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

10 This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God.

We stand for the reading of the Gospel

Alleluia

Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said, ‘You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.’ All Alleluia, alleluia!

Gospel Matthew 16. 13–20

The Lord be with you. All And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All Glory to you, O Lord.

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter

11 answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’ Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

12 The Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

13 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

15 The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

16 How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross.

On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

17 Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand.

Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory.

Bring us at the last with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. All Amen.

18 The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us so we pray. All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

19 Invitation to Communion

25 Shop online

While the Cathedral shop is shut, we are reviewing all our stock and thinking about the future. We’d really like to know if you have any suggestions for what you would like to see in the shop. We are thinking about Christmas in particular – if we produced a Cathedral Christmas card for sale in the shop, would you be interested in supporting the Cathedral by buying it as your card for this year?

Meanwhile, the online shop is very much open, and you can click and collect your order from the Cathedral when you visit. You can visit the shop at southwarkcathedralshop.org

Please email me your suggestions at [email protected]

News from the Wardens

Dear Friends,

This weekend we will sadly be saying goodbye to Canon Mandy as the 23rd is her last Sunday with us. Since joining the Cathedral in 2014 we have all benefited from her ministry especially her thought- provoking sermons and Lent courses. The Learning Centre has developed further under her leadership, which has had a significant impact on our work with schools as well as young people and families in the congregation. We would like to say a huge thank you on your behalf to Canon Mandy for all her hard work and tremendous contribution.

27 We will not be able to give Canon Mandy a traditional Southwark farewell but as she is presiding at the Eucharist on Sunday we can join together either online or in person at the Cathedral and wish her well as she takes up her new role as Dean of Bristol in the Autumn. We are sure that she would appreciate receiving your good wishes by email to: [email protected] or by writing to her at Montague Chambers. Do email us or see us on Sunday if you would like to discuss a gift for Mandy.

Please do keep in touch with us and with each other.

All good wishes, Linda and Daniel [email protected] [email protected]
