Southwark Cathedral stands at the oldest crossing point of the tidal River Thames. It is believed that there was a community of nuns on the site long before 1066. In 1106, the church was re-founded as a priory, with a hospital created alongside the church. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, St Saviour’s was rented to the congregation by Henry VIII. This large parish church served a colorful area, not only of merchants and minor courtiers, but also actors, foreign craftsmen, and the ladies from the Bankside brothels. St Saviour’s church became Southwark Cathedral in 1905. This constant rebuilding also seals the architectural wonder of the place, with a beautiful blend of medieval, Norman and Gothic elements, to name but a few. This is part of the reason why Southwark Cathedral, today, makes for such a stunning event venue. On another note, the church was William Shakespeare’s workplace parish church, and his brother Edmund is buried here. Charles Dickens spent his Wednesday evenings in the bell tower with the bell ringers and then retired with the group to the George Inn on Borough High Street, all of this recorded in Charles’ journals. To this day, Wednesday evening remains the day of bell ringing practice.     The Liturgy of Palm Sunday Palm Sunday 28 March 2021 9.00am Welcome to Southwark Cathedral Set on the south bank of the River Thames in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in London, this building has been a constant witness in a place of change. The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a monastery, it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie. With Westminster Abbey and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation the Priory became a parish church and it remains so for the people of Bankside. In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark. As well as a place of constant witness to our faith in Jesus Christ, this church has a momentous and proud history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. In the 20th century this cathedral was at the heart of the new movement in theology termed ‘South Bank Religion’. This movement asked challenging questions of people about faith in the modern age which continue to be explored at Southwark Cathedral which describes itself as ‘inclusive: faithful: radical’. The Augustinian Canons created a hospital alongside the church; this was the direct predecessor of today's St Thomas's Hospital opposite the Houses of Parliament. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the last six canons were pensioned and the church itself became the property of King Henry VIII who rented it to the congregation.
