Mimi Blais, the Queen of Ragtime and virtuoso performer, pre- sents music written by the masters of ragtime, sometimes slow and introspective and sometimes fast and furious! If one would ask legendary Bob Darch: Is ragtime music dead? He would an- swer: I never heard it had been sick!

After the movie “The Sting”, ragtime music once again became popular not only in the but all around the world. The renewed interest in ragtime, the American popular music in the early part of the 20th century, is one of the most curious cases of changing musical taste in recent years. The revival began in 1970, when a recording of eight piano rags of Scott Joplin, the most important of the ragtime composers, appeared on the None- such classical label. The record, which soon became a best-seller, was the idea of Joshua Rifkin, then a twenty-six-year-old pianist with degrees in composition from the Juilliard School of Music and in musicology from Princeton University. Rifkin was not rediscovering forgotten or previously unrecorded material, for ragtime had remained popular with and Dixieland audiences. But he played the music differently from the “flashy school of ragtime,” as he called it.” What emerged was a subtle and deli- cate music, with graceful melodies and compelling rhythms, which captivated a large new audience. The ragtime revival has provided a valuable service in making these pieces readily avail- able again. This music originally came from saloons and cat- houses. It was meant to entertain, and Mimi Blais will do just that!

Eventually, she settled and worked in southwestern Alaska for six years, living 400 miles off the road system, immersed within the indigenous population. It was here that she learned to use music as a source of connection to tran- scend language and cultural barriers. This discovery was what led her to pursue her passion—using music as healing art to foster compassion, spirituality and promote positive social change. She tours nationally, and has opened for Judy Collins, Kenny Log- gins, and Michael McDonald.

This veteran ensemble (cornet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, drums and bass) emulates the sounds of jazz from the 1920’s and 1930’s with the same instrumentation as that of the early New Orleans jazz groups such as Nick Larocca’s Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the Buddy Bolden Band and the Louis Armstrong Band. Their selection of tunes crosses the most popular list of that time period and is performed in a fun and energetic swing style.

Visual Arts Classes

*Check CPAC website for class supply lists EXPRESSIVE PASTELS: FROM SEMI-REALISM TO ABSTRACT Instructor: Cynthia Haase Dates: Every Monday, through April 20, 2020 Time: 9 AM - 12:00 PM Fee: $37.50/3-hour Session Paper and Pastels: Available for a fee of $4.00 per class.

Pastels date back to the Renaissance and are favored for their brilliant and varied hues. We begin with a simple watercolor under painting and mark making process which sets you up for applying the final layers in pastel with as much or as little pastel application as you wish. The final product can be semi- realistic such as gestural animals, landscapes, florals or fig- ures. Gestural marks suggest an object without completely defining it. Your final product could also be an abstract which relies on value, color, shape, line and texture.

SCRATCHBOARD/WATERCOLOR: COMBINING DRAWING WITH PAINTING Instructor: Rick Wheeler Dates: Every Tuesday, January 7 to April 21, 2020 Time: 9 AM - 12:00 PM Fee: $45/3-hour class or a special price of $75 instead of $90, if you register for both classes with Rick on the same day.

Scratchboard is fundamentally a drawing medium, popular in the early 1900's for book illustration. Scratchboard makes for some very dramatic black & white renderings, but with this class, the students will discover how adding color - using traditional watercolor - can enhance their drawings.

ACRYLIC LANDSCAPE: A PAINTERLY APPROACH Instructor: Rick Wheeler Dates: Every Tuesday, January 7 to April 21, 2020 Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Fee: $45/3-hour class or a special price of $75 instead of $90, if you register for both classes with Rick on the same day.

"Painterly" is a term often used among other painters. If one painter calls another artists work, "painterly" it's considered a compliment. The term is used to describe a style of work that allows for visible brushstrokes, thick applications of paint, dry brush, and blocking-in, while incorporating a more gener- alized, less detailed approach to painting. All of these tech- niques, and several others will be covered. EXPLORING MONET’S GARDEN Instructor: Tonja Sell Dates: March 15 th and 16 th Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Fee: $285, Early Bird Special $260 by February 16, 2020

In this workshop, students will learn drawing and painting floral landscapes expressively using techniques employed by Claude Monet. Tonja will share photo references shot during her recent time spent at Monet’s garden at Giverny. This workshop would be appropriate for pastel, water- media, acrylic, and oil painters. Learn to layer paint to create luminosity and the illusion of light in your floral and landscapes by exploring the garden that inspired a master.

ABSTRACTION TO REALISM: MERGING OIL AND COLD WAX Instructor: Tonja Sell Dates: March 17 th and 18 th Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Fee: $285, Early Bird Special $260 by February 18, 2020

Are you interested in creating rich textural oil paintings? Do you like the idea of merging realism and abstract ele- ments into your oil paintings? The addition of cold wax medium into oil paints not only allows you to create beau- tiful texture while speeding up the dry time of oils but oils but is a great solution for oil painters who enjoy working realistically while allowing expressive and abstracted ele- ments to be incorporated into the painting. You need not be an experienced oil painter, but a basic understanding of working in oils is important.

OIL PAINTING: IMPRESSIONISM - BETTER PAINTINGS THROUGH SIMPLIFYING! Instructor: Charles Thomas Dates: March 30 th and 31 st Time: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM Fee: $285, Early Bird Special $260 if paid in full by March 2, 2020

The most common thing I hear from artists is: "I want to paint looser, but I don't know how..." In this two-day class, we will cover the essentials of what goes into a successful painting: composition and drawing; color and value; paint handling; edges; and putting it all together into a coherent design that says what you want to say without getting lost in details. Working with simple shapes and accurate val- ues, we will explore how to suggest reality without over defining it, how to see more abstractly and paint an effec- tive design.
