Alshire Records Discography
Alshire Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Alshire International Records Discography Alshire was located at P.O. Box 7107, Burbank, CA 91505 (Street address: 2818 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90006). Founded by Al Sherman in 1964, who bought the Somerset catalog from Dick L. Miller. Arlen, Grit and Oscar were subsidiaries. Alshire was a grocery store rack budget label whose main staple was the “101 Strings Orchestra,” which was several different orchestras over the years, more of a franchise than a single organization. Mikkelson Dr. Charles M. Atkinson Karen Pierson Copyright by Yoon Hee Kim 2013 Abstract The National Flute Association (NFA) sponsors a range of non-performance and performance competitions for performers of all ages. Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document. -
85Th Anniversary of Music and Spoken Word
For Immediate Release August 07, 2013 Emeritus Conductors Return to Celebrate 85th Anniversary of Music and the Spoken Word Salt Lake City — On Sunday, August 11, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will commemorate the 85th anniversary of its Music and the Spoken Word broadcast. Music director Mack Wilberg has invited two former conductors of the Choir, Jerold Ottley and Craig Jessop, to join him and associate conductor Ryan Murphy in conducting this week’s broadcast. “Music and the Spoken Word has endured as the world’s longest continuously running network broadcast,” says Choir president Ron Jarrett. “In the beginning, listeners strained to hear the program through the static of their crystal radio sets; now fans tune in through YouTube. Music and the Spoken Word has been a constant during a century of dramatic change.” Ottley conducted the Choir from 1974 to 1999 and Jessop from 1999 to 2008. Ottley, Jessop and Wilberg are the only surviving Mormon Tabernacle Choir conductors. The three conductors have collectively served for 34 years — comprising nearly half of the broadcast’s 85 years! During his tenure as Choir conductor, Jerold Ottley traveled internationally with the Choir on more than 20 tours, to places like Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Under his direction, the Choir also performed at the United States presidential inaugurations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Under the direction of Craig Jessop, the Choir received the Special Recognition Award from the International Radio and Television Society Foundation and the National Medal of Arts from Mormon Tabernacle Choir Announces Summer Concerts – Page 2 President George W. -

Organ Recitals
The Joseph Smith Memorial Building Organ Organ COME, COME, YE SAINTS These words were written as the Mormon pioneers made their historic trek from Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley. The melody was adapted from an English folk song. Come, come, ye Saints, no toil nor And should we die before our labor fear; journey’s through, But with joy wend your way. Happy day! All is well! Recitals Though hard to you this journey We then are free from toil and may appear, sorrow, too; Grace shall be as your day. With the just we shall dwell! ’Tis better far for us to strive But if our lives are spared again Our useless cares from us to drive; To see the Saints their rest obtain, Do this, and joy your hearts Oh, how we’ll make this on Temple Square will swell— chorus swell— All is well! All is well! All is well! All is well! THE TEMPLE SQUARE ORGANS The organs at Salt Lake City’s historic Temple Square represent four distinct approaches to the art of organ building, supporting a long-standing tradition of fine organ music. The Salt Lake Tabernacle organ, originally constructed by pioneer organ builder Joseph H. Ridges in the 1860s, has been rebuilt and enlarged through the years, most notably in 1948 by the Æolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston under the direction of G. Donald Harrison. Its 206 ranks, totaling 11,623 pipes, are organized into eight divisions and are played from a five-manual console. This organ is recognized by many as a quintessential example of the American Classic style of organ building, an eclectic approach championed and brought to its zenith by G.
