The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints/Mormon Children’S Music: Its History, Transmission, and Place in Children’S Cognitive Development ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS/MORMON CHILDREN’S MUSIC: ITS HISTORY, TRANSMISSION, AND PLACE IN CHILDREN’S COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Colleen Jillian Karnas-Haines, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005. Dissertation Directed by: Professor Robert C. Provine Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology School of Music The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a children’s auxiliary program for ages three to eleven that meets weekly before or after their Sunday worship service. This auxiliary, called Primary, devotes much of its time to singing. Music is not a childish diversion, but an essential activity in the children’s religious education. This study examines the history of the songbooks published for Primary use, revealing the many religious and cultural factors that influence the compilations. The study then looks at the modern methods of transmission as the author observes the music education aspects of Primary. Lastly, the study investigates the children’s use of and beliefs about Primary music through the lens of cognitive development. The study reveals that Primary music is an ever-evolving reflection of the theology, cultural trends, and practical needs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Unaware of such implications, the children use Primary music to express their religious musicality at cognitive developmentally appropriate levels. Smith Professor Jonathan Dueck © Copyright by Colleen Jillian Karnas-Haines 2005 PREFACE Given the length of the name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this study often uses the term “LDS,” or “Church” with a capital C instead. The term “church” with a lowercase c refers to a non-specific church. The term LDS stands for “Latter-day Saints,” appears in numerous published sources, and is viewed by the Church as a more representative designation than the well-known “Mormon.” In addition, this study refers to Church members as “Saints,” with a capital S, a shortened form of the Church’s suggested moniker, “Latter-day Saints.” The founding prophet, Joseph Smith, Junior, after the first reference is referred to as simply, Joseph Smith, as is common in the culture. The main scriptures of the Church: The Doctrine and Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price, The Book of Mormon, the Bible, and their components are cited as scriptures. As such, they do not require italicization or quotation marks for their titles or their standardized title abbreviations. The standardized abbreviations occur in the footnotes while full publication information is contained in the bibliography. In hypothetical or non-specific situations, he or she is used indeterminately. A glossary of terms is provided at the end of the dissertation, in order to aid the reader in understanding unique LDS terminology or terminology that may have a different definition in the LDS community. ii DEDICATION Many people contributed to this dissertation: from professors and mentors, to colleagues and research subjects.     Born in England Sobrina Smith Lamb was born April 29, 1847 in Eaton-Bray, Bedfordshire, England to George William Smith and Catherine Wooten Smith. She was their first child. Her sister, Jane was born the following year on October 4, 1848. Another sister, Maria Elizabeth, was born on September 18, 1852 but lived only a month and died on October 1st. A brother, Marlon Lehi, was born on March 8, 1854 and died the same day. Sobrina’s parents, George and Catherine, were married on December 21, 1845 and they became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with George being baptized on October 29, 1848 and Catherine was baptized on December 15, 1848 shortly after Jane was born. They were the first members of the Smith family to join the Church. Migration to Utah Sobrina immigrated to America with her parents and younger sister Jane, five and one half years after her parents joined the Church. They sailed from Liverpool 24 April 1854 (1) to America on the Clara Wheeler, a tall-mast square-rigger in a company of 29 Mormon immigrants. After 70 days at sea they arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana 3 Jul 1854 and sailed up the Mississippi River to St. Louis Missouri and then onto Council Bluffs, Iowa. The family spent one year in Council Bluffs and then departed with the Milo Andrus Company on trek to Salt Lake Valley. They arrived in the Valley October 24, 1855, and then moved on to Farmington where the Smith’s established their home.

Signatures on file in the Graduate School. iii Abstract Recent studies have reconsidered the Mormon Culture Region in light of its 1880{1920 transition to American political and economic norms. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation.     For Immediate Release August 07, 2013 Emeritus Conductors Return to Celebrate 85th Anniversary of Music and the Spoken Word Salt Lake City — On Sunday, August 11, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will commemorate the 85th anniversary of its Music and the Spoken Word broadcast. Music director Mack Wilberg has invited two former conductors of the Choir, Jerold Ottley and Craig Jessop, to join him and associate conductor Ryan Murphy in conducting this week’s broadcast. “Music and the Spoken Word has endured as the world’s longest continuously running network broadcast,” says Choir president Ron Jarrett. “In the beginning, listeners strained to hear the program through the static of their crystal radio sets; now fans tune in through YouTube. Music and the Spoken Word has been a constant during a century of dramatic change.” Ottley conducted the Choir from 1974 to 1999 and Jessop from 1999 to 2008. Ottley, Jessop and Wilberg are the only surviving Mormon Tabernacle Choir conductors. The three conductors have collectively served for 34 years — comprising nearly half of the broadcast’s 85 years! During his tenure as Choir conductor, Jerold Ottley traveled internationally with the Choir on more than 20 tours, to places like Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
