Box 7107, Burbank, CA 91505 (Street address: 2818 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90006). Founded by Al Sherman in 1964, who bought the Somerset catalog from Dick L. Miller. Arlen, Grit and Oscar were subsidiaries. Alshire was a grocery store rack budget label whose main staple was the “101 Strings Orchestra,” which was several different orchestras over the years, more of a franchise than a single organization. Southern Black Gospel Music: Qualitative Look at Quartet Sound
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SOUTHERN BLACK GOSPEL MUSIC: QUALITATIVE LOOK AT QUARTET SOUND DURING THE GOSPEL ‘BOOM’ PERIOD OF 1940-1960 A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY BY BEATRICE IRENE PATE LYNCHBURG, V.A. April 2014 1 Abstract The purpose of this work is to identify features of southern black gospel music, and to highlight what makes the music unique. One goal is to present information about black gospel music and distinguishing the different definitions of gospel through various ages of gospel music. A historical accounting for the gospel music is necessary, to distinguish how the different definitions of gospel are from other forms of gospel music during different ages of gospel. The distinctions are important for understanding gospel music and the ‘Southern’ gospel music distinction. The quartet sound was the most popular form of music during the Golden Age of Gospel, a period in which there was significant growth of public consumption of Black gospel music, which was an explosion of black gospel culture, hence the term ‘gospel boom.’ The gospel boom period was from 1940 to 1960, right after the Great Depression, a period that also included World War II, and right before the Civil Rights Movement became a nationwide movement. This work will evaluate the quartet sound during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, which will provide a different definition for gospel music during that era. Using five black southern gospel quartets—The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Golden Gate Quartet, The Soul Stirrers, and The Swan Silvertones—to define what southern black gospel music is, its components, and to identify important cultural elements of the music. -

Ein Cyclus von Phantasiestücken, Op. 5 (1871) 21.32 Röntgen was a child prodigy and from an early 1 I Allegro con brio 3.34 age composed ambitious works for the piano. He 2 II Andante con espressione 1.42 frequently performed his own, and others, piano 3 II Allegretto moderato 3.10 concertos. Beethoven's Fourth and Brahms's Second 4 IV Andante con moto 2.45 were particular favourites. It was through 5 V Presto 3.43 6 VI Allegretto con grazia 2.11 performances of Beethoven's Piano Sonata op.111 and 7 VII Grave 4.27 Schumann's Etudes Symphoniques that Röntgen established himself. However, it was not as a soloist Neckens Polska Variationen über ein but as an accompanist that Röntgen would make a schwedisches Volkslied, Op. 11 (1874) 17.55 lasting impression. The partnership with his 8 (Theme) Ruhig 1.24 contemporary, the baritone Johannes Messchaert, was 9 (1) Tema ben tenuto 1.05 legendary and they made several European tours. -

Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. An alphabetical listing of her studio recordings, including recording dates, matrix numbers and, when known, dates first issued. Compiled by Jim Marshall, and updated April 2019 I first produced a Jo Stafford discography ‘way back in 1995, encouraged by the late Tom Colborn who probably knew more about Jo’s career than the lady herself. Tom had already done much of the groundwork and, knowing that I’d acquired a computer - an early Amstrad - suggested that I take over the task. I was well into my research when the indispensable "In Tune" magazine started publishing its own in-depth listing of Jo’s huge catalogue of recordings. The work put into that by Brian Henson, Colin Morgan, Robert W. Rice and others was an immeasurable help. My thanks also go to Ken Seavor, John Ridgeway, Lucas Tuinstra, Jeff Lasbury and Ray Purslow plus, of course Jo Stafford and Paul Weston , all of whom contributed to Tom’s original research. More recently I’ve had important help from Michel Ruppli, Tim Weston, Robert Rice, Richard Weize and Adam Daff resulting in what I like to think is an almost “complete" alphabetical listing of Jo’s commercial recordings, including her work with the Pied Pipers and her alter egos, Cinderella G. Stump and Darlene Edwards, not forgetting Jonathan! (Apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone!) Apart from a handful of never-ever issued Capitol and Columbia tracks, almost all Jo’s studio recordings seem to have been reissued on CD and are probably still in print. In fact, the seemingly relentless reissue of Stafford CDs, mainly in the UK, is proof, if proof was needed, of the lady’s long-lasting popularity. -

This is by no means an exhaustive list; there are countless others who are widely recognized for their performances of music from the Great American Songbook. -
