Among the latter, it should be borne in mind that Romani and Bayash communities only became the dominant populations in certain areas of Hungary in the last few decades and that the standard written versions of the Romani and Bayash linguistic varieties are still being formed. This study describes the main features of the ethnic and linguistic divisions of the Roma communities in Hungary; the problems of Romani and Bayash literacy; and initial attempts at collecting Romani and Bayash toponyms in the country. Although an elaborate, widely used system of Romani and Bayash settlement names exists, the collection and analysis of the microtoponyms is hindered by the fact that the settlement of the Roma population is only a fairly recent event and that the communities have not typically been involved in agriculture, an occupation much more closely associated with the use of these names. This paper provides, for the first time, a summary of the results of several toponymic field studies conducted in Hungary’s Romani and Bayash communities.

The German community in Hungary suffered many blows at the end of World War II and after it, on the basis of collective guilt. Immediately after the Red Army had marched in, gathering and deportation started into the camps of the Soviet Union, primarily into forced-labour camps in Donetsk, the Caucasus, and the Ural mountains. One third of them never RETURNED4HOSELEFTBEHINDHADTOFACEFORCEDRESETTLEMENT THECONlSCATION of their properties, and other ordeals. Their history was a taboo subject until the change of the political system in 1989. Not even until our days, by the 70th anniversary of the events, has their story reached a worthy place in national and international remembrance. International collaboration, the establishment of a research institute is needed to set to rights in history the story of the ordeal of the German community after World War II, for the present and future generations.     Methodist History, 47:3 (April 2009) Methodism in Hungary ZOLTÁN KOVÁCS 1898-1920: The Antecedents of Methodist Mission in Hungary and the “Macedonian Call” The first representatives of Methodism in Hungary were Matthew Simpson, a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and William Fairfield Warren, a minister of the New England Conference in 1857 after attending the World Convention of the Evangelical Alliance in Berlin, Germany. Enroute to Constantinople and Palestine following the convention, they interrupted their journey to spend a weekend in the Hungarian capital, Pest-Buda, at invitation of some anti-Habsburg opposition leaders they had met in Germany.1 Five years later Warren, then Professor at the Methodist Episcopal Missionary Institute in Berlin and Ludwig Sigismund Jacoby, founder and superintendent of the Germany Missionary conference, stopped again in Pest-Buda for three days. They were hosted by Adrian van Andel, a former Methodist lay minister in Hamburg who pastored the German-speaking Reformed Affiliated Church in the Hungarian capital.2 Despite these early positive encounters, a perma- nent Methodist work was not established in Hungary until the 1890s. Two circumstances appear to have influenced the beginning of missionary activities at that time. Probably the most important local factor was a group of Swabian men in the Bácska region of southern Hungary. On the basis of newly discovered documents and map representations, the authors have carried out a reinterpretation of earlier known sources and have abstracted from these information appropriate for a renewed geographical identification of the site of the tomb. The results have been construed in a reconstructed end-17th-century landscape using geoinformation methods. Identification of the Ottoman settlement at Turbék, which can be associated with the construction of the Sultan’s türbe (tomb), was made possible through the collection of finds on the surface of the archaeo- logical site at the Turbék vineyard, the increased intensity of finds and through geophysical examination.

    The first and second battle of Mohács 2014199 Balázs Polgár THE FIRST AND THE Second “BaTTLE OF Mohács” (AD 1526, 1687) ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND PERSPECTIVES Conflict archaeology is a young subdiscipline of Hungarian archaeological research. The Ministry of Defence Military History Institute and Museum has been conducting research on the battlefields of Mohács and Harsány mountain (AD 1526, 1687) since 2010. The methodology of the research is based on classical conflict archaeological methodology (landscape archaeology, non-destructive archaeological research, military terrain analysis). The area and the historical landscape of the first and the second battle of Mohács show similarities, at the same time the different amount of source material resulted different battlefield or landscape archaeological perspectives. A konfliktusrégészet fiatal régészeti diszciplína a magyar régészeti kutatásban. A HM Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum 2010 óta folytat kutatásokat a mohácsi és a Harsány-hegyi (1526, 1687) csata helyszínén. A kutatásmódszertan a klasszikus konfliktusrégészet módszertanára épül (tájrégészet, non-destruktív régészeti kutatás, hadtudományi terepelemzés). Az első és a második mohácsi csata helyszíne és a történeti táj arculata sok hasonlóságot mutat, az eltérő forrásbázis ugyanakkor eltérő csatatér-régészeti és tájrégészeti perspektívákat eredményez.
