Scenario: An Apt Pupil4

“Sing.” Oh-Bei-Wan spoke up from his corner near the fire .Sing moved over to sit beside the elderly pauper as the young man’s hands worried with the fabric of the elders favorite coat,

4 Going to state that the Student and Apt Pupil are both Sing. an article that the old man had passed to Sing last year but he’d not yet gotten used to calling his own. “Do you recall when we first met?” Sing nodded as the memory flowed, unheedingly through his mind. Sing had been but a young boy back then, only twelve, and he’d been met with the older man, back then at least in his mid-forties, in what the elder always called ‘a fortuitous encounter’. The elderly man had told the young boy that he had A Special Aura5 within his bones and Chi flows. This had prompted the old man to take the boy up as his own personal student, and adopt him once he’d found out Sing’s orphan status. Sing had been overjoyed and had eagerly joined the elder in his lessons. After a visit from a companion, Xi Shi, whose skill in the use of One Yang Finger aided in the unblocking of his and awakening to Battle Qi. It was thanks to this power, and the medicines that Oh-Bei-Wan had given him, that he’d defeated the bullies of a mute girl by the name of Fong. Sing closed his eyes in regret in the present as he recalled that scene. A child standing before his fellows who scattered with a single sweeping finger. He felt the raw memory of the panic that had gripped at his heart as the children in his mind’s eye were tossed like so many dry leaves before the whirlwind of his Qi. The splash of crimson upon the ground as one of the children fell wrong and then the sheer joy as Xi Shi moved to heal the boy. The punishment, well earned, that had followed. Sing remembered well. “I recall, Master,” Sing said as he blinked away the tears that held his mixed emotions, “I remember it quite well.” “Do you recall my words.” Oh-Bei-Wan asked kindly. “The duty of upholding world peace and punishing evil will be yours.” Sing replied with a small smile. “The Good cannot coexist with the Bad.” “I spoke the truth as I understand it.” Oh-Bei-Wan said lightly. “You have a strong sense of fate about you and a kind heart able to uphold Good.” The old man seemed at peace as his eyes took in the flame of the hearth. “My training has been done. You have learned under me how to form the Tai Chi Quan Leaf Armor, taken your first steps in Deja-Fu, and more beyond that under my friends and companions.” The old man seemed to come back to himself suddenly. “Take me over to the viewing window, Sing. I wish to see the sunrise.” Sing helped the old man up and kept pace with the elderly man as they walked out to see the eastern sky, painted a dull violet by the beginnings of morning. The view was nice here on the eastern side of the alley the old man was landlord of and the alley itself, after years of renovations, was a place of great pride for the elderly man. The building was a blocky brick four stories tall which held within over sixty tenants. It had started out as a hole in the wall, with no running water except in the courtyard and extremely unreliable electricity, but with time the elderly man had improved on the building with all the skill of a master martial artist. Some would wonder why it was so hard for the old man, but the world had been rough on the elderly teacher over the last decade. While in body he was ‘merely’ fifty-five years old Sing had watched the old man fight a thousand year old sorcerer, help push back the beast that

In the end, the old man had lived more in the last ten years than in the previous forty-five, as he was oft to complain about. Sing felt his nose twitch as an absolutely rancid smell hit him. “Oh, god damn it, Master!” He pinched his nose whilst muttering as a chuckle colored his tone. He turned to harangue the old man. “Fart on me will yo...” and noted the old man wasn’t blinking. “Master!” Thus, before the sky even turned pink. Before his last sunrise. So ended the life of Oh-Bei-Wan. As everyone in the alley adapted to the loss of the old man who’d been tending the place for the last decade I was finally free to just be free once more. I could, at will, switch between the form of a random minor person of little import and a ghost of my elderly self to help nudge Sing along his way. While the young man wasn’t an expert at anything in particular currently he had A Special Aura which meant that the decade I’d trained him in using his Qi could almost be counted twice for how much he’d learned. He was quite skilled, almost to the point of attaining the Edgeless Blade after a mere decade of effort without any perks aiding him, and his effort in other areas shown as well. “Ah, Wan,” the massive ‘wolf god’ glanced over to me as I walked in in the persona of the ‘random stranger’ as he continued to stare out from the Seven Sins Tower towards the battlefield that was the Nippon Demilitarized Zone, “how was your decade?” “Productive.” I answered as I stared out at the massive undead army countering the movements of the radioactive hive-mind beasts. They were somewhat like reptiles, if said reptiles were able to reliably cut through civilian vehicles and hoarded in the hundreds of thousands per battlefield. “Unbelievable,” I said as I stared at the massive clash before me, “the battlefield is huge.” “Yep,” the massive wolf bore his teeth as hordes of skeleton, “you may as well think of this as the second coming of the Great Wall. We’ve had some serious problems come from the east so we’re really ironing out the systems by which we’re defending ourselves.” “Gods above. The Beast has nothing on this.” I said as I looked out at the carnage. “Indeed.” Xi Shi, once G-Lock, said calmly as she too arrived. “The martial artists of the city are caught up in their own little bubble of power and have yet to really see beyond the boundaries of their little world. The only exception is Sing.and the Boss.” “How is he anyway?” I asked as I turned to the massive golden wolf as he stretched. “I sold him off to the Government.” The massive wolf now known to the locals as Ashitaka said. I stared at him. “Last I heard they were having him have loads of sex to mass produce soul weapons. He still gets into trouble but they keep a lid on it all so as to keep their magic weapon depot active.” “That’s one way to do it.” I said as I laughed. “So,” Xi Shi prodded my side as she arrived at it, “how much power do you have in that form?” “I have my senses and defenses, however that’s it.” I replied. “I can turn into my ghost form and move at the speed of thought while being intangible though so that’s neat. Jump-Chan said it’s only for these three years though.”
