What is the point of reference for the writer? By what standard does the author say text has been removed from the bible? Which bible?

When we spoke about the inspiration and inerrancy of scripture, I explained that the originals were that which was inspired and men were “carried along” to write. Our job, then, is to produce a text that is as close to those originals as possible. The standard is what was penned by Paul, John, Matthew, Luke etc. No translating teams, including those of the KJV 1611, can claim themselves to be inspired. Translators are to work faithfully with the manuscripts they have been given to produce the most accurate translation available. The standard is not which translation is older, but which translation is more faithful to the originals.

In this case the verses in question have been removed because the translators have reason to believe that they were not present in the earliest and best manuscripts we have possession of today. The verses in question are generally either bracketed or relegated to footnotes.

This is not a case of removing evidence to change theological truths, but rather trying to remain faithful to the original autographs regardless of what past translating teams have chosen to include. The information contained in the removed verses does not change theological truths that affect major doctrine.

Harper Collins does produce the NIV translation now. They do also produce and sell the “Satanic Bible”—it can be found under the section (religion > Demonology & Satanism > Satanic Bible- Mass Market PB). They also produce “The Joy of Gay Sex” – found under the section ( Social Science > LGBT Studies > The Joy of Gay Sex).

Harper Collins seems to be an all-around publishing company which happens to have a Christian publishing section. One might argue that Christian money should not go to such an organization because of the other content that they publish. That question is beyond our discussion today. The NIV must be assessed based on its own merits, and the merits of its translating team, rather than on the merits of the company who purchased rights to it. Who owns the company does not change the words that appear on the pages unless they edit the work of the translating teams.
