Collection Development Policy Statement Rare Books Collection Subject Specialist responsible: Doug McElrath, 301‐405‐9210, [email protected] I. Purpose The Rare Books Collection in the University of Maryland Libraries preserves physical evidence of the most successful format for recording and disseminating human knowledge: the printed codex. From the invention of printing with movable type in Asia to its widespread adoption and explosive growth in 15th century Europe, the printed book in all its forms has had an inestimable impact on the way information has been organized, spread, and consumed. The invention of printing is one of the critical technological advances that made possible the modern world. At the University of Maryland, the Rare Books Collection serves multiple purposes: As a teaching collection that preserves physical examples of the way the book has evolved over the centuries, from a hand‐crafted artifact to a mass‐produced consumable. As a research collection for targeted concentrations of printed text supporting scholarly investigation (see collection scope below). As an historical repository for outstanding examples of human accomplishment as preserved in printed formats, including seminal works in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences. As a research repository for noteworthy examples of the art and craft of the book: typography, bindings, paper making, illustration, etc. As a secure storehouse for works that because of their scarcity, fragility, age, ephemerality, provenance, controversial content, or high monetary value are not appropriate for the general circulating collection. The Rare Books Collection seeks to enable researchers to interact with the physical artifact as much as possible. -

PAYING ATTENTION TO PUBLIC READERS OF CANADIAN LITERATURE: POPULAR GENRE SYSTEMS, PUBLICS, AND CANONS by KATHRYN GRAFTON BA, The University of British Columbia, 1992 MPhil, University of Stirling, 1994 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2010 © Kathryn Grafton, 2010 ABSTRACT Paying Attention to Public Readers of Canadian Literature examines contemporary moments when Canadian literature has been canonized in the context of popular reading programs. I investigate the canonical agency of public readers who participate in these programs: readers acting in a non-professional capacity who speak and write publicly about their reading experiences. I argue that contemporary popular canons are discursive spaces whose constitution depends upon public readers. My work resists the common critique that these reading programs and their canons produce a mass of readers who read the same work at the same time in the same way. To demonstrate that public readers are canon-makers, I offer a genre approach to contemporary canons that draws upon literary and new rhetorical genre theory. I contend in Chapter One that canons are discursive spaces comprised of public literary texts and public texts about literature, including those produced by readers. I study the intertextual dynamics of canons through Michael Warner’s theory of publics and Anne Freadman’s concept of “uptake.” Canons arise from genre systems that are constituted to respond to exigencies readily recognized by many readers, motivating some to participate. I argue that public readers’ agency lies in the contingent ways they select and interpret a literary work while taking up and instantiating a canonizing genre. -

French publishing in World War Two: A habitus of submission? Jean-Yves Mollier The present article sets out to explore the situation of French publishing between June 1940 and August 1944. Before addressing the main argument, however, it is important to bear in mind that it is difficult to understand this key sector of French cultural life in the period immediately prior to the Nazi occupation without looking back at its development over the preceding decades and even centuries. Similarly, understanding the deeper meaning underlying the attitude of the leading publishers who occupied the higher echelons of the publishing union means bearing in mind their “centuries-old habitus of submission”1 to authority. Take for example the “voluntary delegation of notables representing Paris's industrial sector” led by the industrialists Emile Menier and Jean- François Cail and the printer Henri Plon to the Elysée Palace on December 19, 1851 to thank Louis- Napoléon Bonaparte for “guaranteeing the defence of order, family, and property” after seizing power in a coup seventeen days earlier.2 Though it is important not to overstate the importance of such an event in the contemporary context, it can be seen as symbolic of a craven attitude to power that remained largely unchanged in the summer of 1940. Napoleon I and his successors set up a system to police the book trade, with inspectors whose task it was to keep a close eye not only on ports and borders, but also printers, bookshops, pedlars, second-hand bookshops, and any other premises or itinerant points of sale where books could be acquired. -

COURT REJECTS $125 MILLION SETTLEMENT IN GOOGLE DIGITAL BOOK SCANNING PROJECT by Jennifer J. Hagan1 & Peter Marcus2 Citing unfairness to authors all over the world, U.S. Circuit Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan rejected a proposed amended settlement agreement ("ASA") in a class action lawsuit filed by authors and publishers against Google on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. In a 46-page opinion, Judge Chin wrote, “While the digitization of books and the creation of a universal digital library would benefit many, the ASA would simply go too far.” The ASA had been proposed in connection with the book scanning project which Google launched in 2004 concerning commercially available, out-of-print books still protected by U.S. copyright law. Google was sued in 2005 by authors and publishers who claimed massive copyright infringement against Google for digitizing and selling books without the permission of authors. Google raised the defense of fair use under section 107 of the Copyright Act. Settlement negotiations began in 2006 and at least two proposed settlement agreements have been preliminarily approved only to be met with hundreds of objections by class members. The most recent agreement, the ASA, was preliminarily approved in November, 2009. The Court was troubled by the fact that the proposed ASA could potentially violate section 201(e) of the Copyright Act and reiterated that "[a] copyright owner's right to exclude others from using his property is fundamental and beyond dispute," and it found that, if it approved the settlement, the Court could potentially release the copyright interests of individual copyright owners who never consented to the transfer. -

INTRODUCTION We live in interesting times. Digital cameras are now cheaper than textbooks—a profound inversion with roots in Moore’s law1 and Asian manufacturing—with consequences extending from the present moment into a future littered with electronic reading devices. In fact, the number of e-reader prototypes presented at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES)2 was so great that it caused some tech reporters to complain.3 Yet, strangely, none of these prototypes will allow us to read the books already on our shelves. Though the future is always hazy, it is hardly controversial to predict that future books will be digitally authored and that most books will be digitally distributed. Furthermore, like all existing books, they will rely on the information from previous books. It is apparent, then, that having all extant books in digital form is not just desirable, but critical. The missing link is digitization—the process of converting print media into electronic media—which has historically been prohibitively difficult and expensive, keeping it largely in the hands of big players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. -

Introduction When Roger Chartier and Henri-Jean Martin were preparing the introduction to the first volume of their monumental Histoire de l’Édition francaise (History of French publishing), which they entitled Le livre conquérant. Du Moyen Age au milieu du XVIIe siècle (The Conquering Book. From the Middle Ages to the mid-seventeenth century), they encountered a problem – one might even call it an aporia. They explained their twin debt both to Lucien Febvre, the initiator of research into the history of the book,1 and to Jean-Pierre Vivet, a journalist turned director of Promodis Publishing, who had expressed his desire to “see [the publisher] placed at the center of these four volumes,” which he had entrusted to them.2 This outspoken directive implied that the figure of the publisher long predated the invention of printing, and that he had been performing the role of broker or mediator without interruption from the thirteenth up to the twentieth century, as is the case today. ODYSSEY ELEMENTARY LIBRARY MEDIA SCHOOL LEVEL GUIDELINES The purpose of the library is not only to help the students develop a love for reading, but teach them about literature, research, technology and other skills that will help them to understand the world around them and how they can contribute. LIBRARY CLASS SCHEDULE Each class has an assigned time to visit the library. Kindergarten classes are 20 minutes once a week. 1st through 6th grades attend for 30 minutes weekly unless an assembly, holiday, early-out, or a field trip takes that time. Class library times are not “made up”, but students may exchange books during open library. Kindergarten will not check out any books. 1st grades can check out one book during their class time and 2nd through 6th grades may check out two books. Each book is due 2 weeks from check out date. LIBRARY HOURS The library is open at specific times each day for book exchange. As soon as a student has finished a book, their teacher may give them permission to come to open library to exchange it. He/she does not have to wait until their next weekly class time. Open library hours are 8:45 – 9:15 each morning. Friday’s anytime that the librarian is available in the library until 1:15. LIBRARY CURRICULUM Students will be taught library skills appropriate to their grade level according to the DESK (Davis Essential Skills & Knowledge) standards. Through stories, book talks, displays, videos, and author spotlights, students will learn that reading is fun and educational. They will understand how to get the most out of reading. -
