Administrative history / Biographical sketch

Note (1874-1937) was an Italian inventor known as the father of long-distance radio transmission, and for his development of Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system. Often credited as the inventor of radio, he shared the 1909 in with in recognition of their contributions to the development of telegraphy. As an entrepreneur, businessman and founder of the The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in Britain in 1897, Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and .

Custodial history The signature was donated to the University Library by Dougald Macgillivray in 1935; it was accessioned by the Archives in 2010.

Scope and content

G. Marconi's signature, dated 1902, appears to have been cut or torn from the bottom of a letter. The folder also contains a photocopied excerpt from the President's Report for 1934-1935 in which the gift from Dr. Dougald Macgillivray is recognized.
