Lang/Baumann’s work can be found in exhibition spaces but also in public spaces, on buildings and in the city which receive their interventions. Their pieces, blending in perfectly with urban and rural spaces, subtly compromise with the established norms and codes. The artists add growths to buildings such as inaccessible staircases or invasive inflatable structures, they occupy unexploited spaces like the arches of a bridge or roofs on which they opened their Hotel , and paint entire roads. Those striking artworks create new landscapes and offer original perspectives on our cities.

The series Street Painting are paintings with geometrical shapes and bright colours directly laid on the asphalt of streets and roads. Until now, six of those paintings have been realised in rural areas, none in France. 40mcube, in line with its presentations of artworks in the public space, invites Lang & Baumann to produce a new painting in a street of Rennes’ city centre. In cities where the use of colours is normed, Lang/Baumann blow up the codes and offer for a year a colourful, poetical and utopic extension of the public space.

Sabrina Lang and Daniel Baumann form a duo of artists working together since 1990. Respectively born in Bern in 1972 and in San Francisco in 1967, they now live in Burgdorf, near Bern. As multifaceted artists, their work shows a great diversity. Under the label L/B, their artistic research involves furnishing as well as mural painting, sculpture or installations that play with elements of architecture and design, which allows them to find tools for a new creative framework. This duo of artists interrogates, calls out and questions the spectator by often departing from familiar and common objects. Hence, for the interiors, they are inspired by 1960-1970s interior design of which they like the typical elements and materials. Through this research, Sabrina Lang emphasises their interest for this time period during which scientists, architects, designers, musicians and other artists have thought together in order to reach an ideal, a sort of immutable perfection. This ideal is found in their Hotel Everland where each element is at its place, where the possibility of moving a chair is no longer possible and more importantly not necessary. Can this ideal of perfection reached inside this small closed room by achieved outside? Inspired by this passed period, Lang and Baumann continue their reflexion by developing a 21st century futurism. But where the Italian “art of the future” of the beginning of the 20th century and the wish, as put by Boccioni, “to paint the new, the fruit of our industrial era”, L/B develops a reflexion on the indispensable, reminding us by some aspects of Bauhaus. Where nothing is unnecessary and useless, a new lecture of the place is possible as an innovative projection. The industrial era imagined by the artists departs the overabundance to get closer to the fundamental. To the purely technological production put forward by the Italian futurists and realised by Bauhaus is here preferred a more spiritual environmental futurism. The one-night tenant of the Hotel Everland thus accepts to play his part as the protagonist in the “journey” offered by the artists. A sort of dream that needs, to be complete, to be realised by the artists and the spectators themselves. The perfection of the beginning then cannot be the same for everyone, just like the imagination of each one will be different. Is the ideal a real notion? Lang and Baumann add touches of humour to this confusing aspect that sometimes gives itself serious appearances. The first element known to the spectator varies depending on the different research trails chosen by the artists. The series Spielfeld for example has for central element a sport field. The characteristic elements of those fields or their representations are diverted and placed in unlikely places. Let’s give the example of football goals placed in the centre of a small lake for Spielfeld #5. Intervenes here the surrealist poetic characteristic of Magritte and that we can find in Lang and Baumann’s work. For the artworks such as Diving Platform and the series Beautiful Steps, the spectator is invited to imagine himself at the heart of unlikely environments and odd contexts. Through his effort of imagination and of projection, the spectator completes the artwork left to the public’s disposal. The notion of space is thus always at the heart of the reflexion of the two artists. The desire to get out of the “white cube”, of museums or other conventional exhibition spaces links them to the Land Art movement and to in situ art. To this notion of space is added the notion of experience. L/B encourages the spectator to enter the artwork and to interact with it. By definition, each experience will be different and the artwork, deliberately freed from any pre-established message left by the artists, will obtain each spectator’s interpretations.

8 It was the case in Vercorin. Street Painting #5 asks for the participation of the spectator, who becomes one of the protagonists of the artwork. Several lines of five colours stretch from the village square to the neighbouring streets, losing their density as they move away from the neuralgic point. Those lines intersect like an underground map. Just like a map at a giant scale, it first appears obscure, but soon becomes readable and familiar. Paradoxical and contrasted, the work surprises and disconcerts the spectator-actor before guiding him to the elements of his everyday life. The colours, striking at first sight because of the clash with the darker tons of the houses, then appear to be a reference to the natural elements specific to the place. It is not possible for the spectator in his journey to see the artwork in its entirety. He is invited to reconstitute the map and to imagine it outside the frame of the work itself, that would be extended to the rest of the village and maybe even infinitely. Concerned to intervene in a given place using pre-existing elements, the artists have chosen for the project in Vercorin to use road marking paint. This brings another dimension to Street Painting #5 and underlines another artistic aspect of Lang and Baumann. If the road marking paint reminds us of mass- production and of codified indications that are meant to last, it is here diverted for artistic purposes in a limited time and space. Within this village, witness of another time, the artists bring us to new paths. Diversion, integration and differentiation are thus subtly at the heart of Street Painting #5 leading the spectator to another dimension.

9 40mcube Founded in 2001, 40mcube is an exhibition space, an office of organization for contemporary art projects and a studio for the fabrication of works of art, based in Rennes (France). 40mcube’s principal activity is art production, where there exists a close interaction with the artist through all aspects of the process including its feasibility, technique, fabrication, up until the presentation and public mediation. This process of production, from expositions to mediation, is made through a reflection on contemporary art, which is further shown through 40mcube’s published editions. Edited through a collaboration with partners of editing houses and distributors, these publications are available in bookstores. 40mcube has developed several different sectors that act as a part of the organization: 40mcube – exposition; 40mcube – edition; 40mcube AV, which co-produces with the audiovisual sector of artists’ videos; 40mcube – espace public, which works with artistic projects taking place in a public space, notably the project Chantier public and the operation Nouveaux commanditaires created by the Fondation de France. 40mcube occupies an industrial building that includes an exhibition space of 170m², an office, a documentation room, a studio for artists in residence, which all exists on a plot of 1100m² divided into three sections: a courtyard, a patio, and a garden. Considered a public place, this exterior site will be used to house artistic projects with the same statute as the exhibitions as well as works of a more permanent nature, which will eventually lead to the creation of an urban sculpture park.

The PHAKT – Colombier Cultural Center develop an urban cultural project at the crossing of works of art, practises and their setting in the cultural space. The artistic project focuses on works display and artistic creation support and explores different kind of media, giving priority to young artists’ work. The PHAKT organize residencies, conferences, encounters with the public, etc. Every year, five to six exhibitions are presented in the exhibition space. About 600 members are taking part to the artistic workshop dedicated to visual art and photography.
