FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL VIOLINIST VADIM GLUZMAN SCHEDULED FOR SERIES OF CONCERTS SeiSolo Artist-in-Residence Vadim Gluzman joins the Colorado Music Festival for a week of concerts.

"The wonderful Vadim Gluzman was technically exacting, dramatically ferocious and simply staggering throughout." – The Guardian

Boulder, CO – From Sunday, July 17th through Friday, July 22nd, SeiSolo Artist-in-Residence, International violinist Vadim Gluzman joins the Colorado Music Festival for four concerts: a Presenting Series recital, a Chamber concert, and a Thursday/Friday repeated concert performance with Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and the Festival Orchestra. All of these concerts start at 7:30 pm and take place at Chautauqua Auditorium (900 Baseline Road, Boulder, CO).

On Sunday, July 17th, Gluzman leads the CMF Chamber Orchestra in a conductor-less program entitled “Inspired by Bach.” The program begins with Alfred Schnittke’s “Suite in the Old Style,” which recalls the glorious temperament of . The program also features Mozart’s lightly-scored and gracefully ornate Violin Concerto No. 3, and his Bach-inspired Adagio and Fugue. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, a profoundly emotional response to the WWII destruction of Dresden, adds both closure and transformation to the program.

Music Director, Jean-Marie Zeitouni had this to say about this concert and Vadim Gluzman, “First, Vadim Gluzman is among the world’s very best violinists. Also, when Vadim Gluzman plays the Mozart G Major Concerto, it’s like a pure ray of sunlight. In the second half he plays and leads the Shostakovich. The Shostakovich Chamber Symphony, which is a string quartet played as a chamber symphony, is the most intense piece of music of the whole summer. The first half of the concert is about life and liveliness and the sun, and the second half of the program is about death, profoundness and darkness.”

Program: Schnittke Suite in the Old Style, Mozart Violin Concerto No.3 in G Major, Mozart Adagio & Fugue in C Minor, Shostakovich Chamber Symphony

Gluzman will be joined by Boulder piano virtuoso David Korevaar for “Italian Influences,” part of the Presenting Series on Tuesday, July 19th. Gluzman and Korevaar will team up to perform César Franck’s familiar, canonic Violin Sonata – a prayerful, passionate tribute to love. In Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’sPiedigrotta 1924 for solo piano, Korevaar goes it alone to reveal the rhapsodic nuances of Neapolitan folk music. In turn, a sextet of Colorado Music Festival string players come together to show off the contrapuntal prowess of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in his “Souvenir de Florence,” initially sketched by the composer while visiting Florence.

Zeitouni's thoughts, “ Let’s not forget that Vadim Gluzman is a Russian trained musician. He’s actually Ukrainian, but the music of Tchaikovsky that’s he’s going to play in this program is the music that is his bones, in his DNA. I think the program itself is very well balanced with the two of them performing the Franck, which is a short sonata but really poetic, really pure. It’s a true dialogue between two souls.”

Program: Franck Violin Sonata in A Major, Castelnuovo-Tedesco Piedigrotta 1924, Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence -more- On Thursday, July 21st and Friday, July 22nd, a program entitled “Russian Passions” with Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and the Festival Orchestra is scheduled.

Violinist Vadim Gluzman concludes his residency by returning to the stage as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s monumental Violin Concerto – one of the most technically difficult works for the instrument. Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and the CMF Orchestra also present Anatoly Liadov’s brief, but transcendent “Enchanted Lake.” For the second half of the program, Modest Mussorgsky’s vivid and ponderous “Pictures at an Exhibition” is paired with stunning new projected animation developed by a team of professors and students at the University of Southern California to celebrate the opening of Frank Gehry’s stunning New World Center in Miami.

“I wanted something that would tie in with the idea of a musical tableau, a musical image. So I chose this piece by Liadov. He wrote very little pieces, and they are all short. But, they are all little munchkins of perfection, and the Enchanted Lake is one of them. It’s a musical tableau about the enchanted lake, a musical depiction of a painting you could see of the enchanted lake, and it is the perfect symphonic poem. The Tchaikovsky concerto, is another picture of heroism with Vadim. And, Mussorgsky's tableau orchestra is also remarkable, and we have the visual animation films to go with it. These are newly made animation films for each of the numbers in the tableau that are from California University,” says Zietouni.

We also cannot forget that Vadim Gluzman will be performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on the very violin it was written for – the 1690 “ex-Auer” Stradivari. The concerto was written for its owner at the time, Leopold Auer.

“No tricks. No gimmicks—just high art from a thrilling artist capable of fire walking while fiddling on the 1690 “ex- Leopold Auer” Stradivari.” – Strings magazine
