Eruvin - Simanim ףד מ ו – Daf 46 the Majority of This Daf Discusses Rules of Psak Eruvin - Simanim ףד מ ו – Daf 46 The majority of this Daf discusses rules of psak. הכלה יברכ י ןנחו ןב ירונ .1 Rebbe Yaakov bar Idi told Rebbe Zeira that he heard Rebbe Yehoshua ben Levi say explicitly that the halachah is like Rebbe Yochanan ben Nuri who grants a sleeping person a techum of two thousand amos. In the halachah follows – הכלה ירבדכ לקימה בוריעב ,addition, Rebbe Yehoshua ben Levi said a general rule that the more lenient opinion in issues regarding eruvin. The Gemara asks why both statements were necessary, and three answers are given. Rav Pappa gives the second reason, explaining that it was important for Rebbe Yehoshua ben Levi to state that the halachah is is referring only to הכלה ירבדכ לקימה בוריעב like Rebbe Yochanan ben Nuri, as one might have thought that cases of eruvei chatzeiros but not to eruvei techumin, for we learn in a Mishnah that eruvei chatzeiros can be for we may benefit someone without their – זש כ י ן םדאל אלש פב נ י ו ,done for someone without their consent consent, and an eruv chatzeiros is a clear benefit. On the other hand, one may not make an eruv techumin for one may not disadvantage someone without – יאש ן יבח ן םדאל אלש נפב י ו ,without the person’s consent their consent, and shifting one’s eruv results in his losing his ability to travel in the opposite direction. הכלה , טמ י ן , נ אר י ן .2 The halachah follows Rebbe Akiva when he – הכלה יברכ אביקע רבחמ ו ,Rebbe Yaakov and Rebbe Zerika said and it follows Rebbe Yose against his colleagues even – יברכו י יסו ירבחמ ו ,disputes an individual colleague .and it follows Rebbe against an individual colleague – יברכו וריבחמ ,where there is more than one ,we incline towards these rules - טמ י ן Rebbe Assi says these rules are halachah, Rebbe Chiya bar Abba says means that it may be publicized at a public לה הכ Rashi explains . יארנ ן and Rebbe Yose b’Rebbe Chaninah says means that these rules may be followed in individual cases but should not be publicized, and טמ י ן ,lecture means that we may not rely upon these rules for deciding a case, but if one did, the decision is not יארנ ןיר reversed. 3. Rules of psak when Tannaim disagree בר י אמ י ר ו בר י י ה ו הד הכלה ברכ י ,Rebbe Yaakov bar Idi said in the name of Rebbe Yochanan regarding disputes and it is not necessary to teach that between Rebbe Yose and , ,הדוהי יבר הדוהי יברו י יסו הכלה יברכ י יסוי בכהל יוי בוהוי ב ,דה Rebbe Meir the halachah follows Rebbe Yose, for if against Rebbe Yehudah Rebbe Meir’s view does not prevail, then against Rebbe Yose there is no question it does not prevail. Rav Assi said that since there is a rule that in disputes between Rebbe Yehudah and Rebbe Shimon, the halachah follows Rebbe Yehudah, he can learn from this that in a dispute between Rebbe Yose and Rebbe Shimon, the halachah follows Rebbe Yose, , because if Rebbe Yehudah does not prevail against Rebbe Yose, certainly Rebbe Shimon does not. In regard to disputes between Rebbe Meir and Rebbe Shimon, it is left as a .all of these rules are not valid – והנתיל ינהל יללכ ,teiku.     Talmudic Metrology IV: The Halakhic Currency Abstract. In 66 B.C.E. Palestine entered under Roman protection and from 6 C.E. on it would be under Roman administration. This situation persisted until the conquest by the Persians in the beginning of the seventh century. The Jerusalem Talmud was thus completely elaborated under Roman rule. Therefore, as for the other units of measure, the Halakhik coinage and the Jerusalem Talmudic monetary denominations are completely dependent on Roman coinage of the time and Roman economic history. Indeed, during the first century Tyrian coinage was similar to the imperial Roman coinage. Nevertheless, during the third century the debasement of Roman money became significant and the Rabbis had difficulty finding the Roman equivalents of the shekel, in which the Torah obligations are expressed and of the prutah, the least amount in Jewish law. In this article we describe the Halakhik coinage, originally based on the Tyrian coinage, and examine the history of the Shekel and the Prutah. We then examine the exegesis of different Talmudic passages related to monetary problems and to the Halakhic coinage, which cannot be correctly understood without referring to Roman economic history and to numismatic data that was unknown to the traditional commentators of the Talmud. Differences between parallel passages of both the Jerusalem and the Babylonian Talmud can then be explained by referring to the economical situation prevailing in Palestine and Babylonia. For example, the notion of Kessef Medina, worth one eighth of the silver denomination, is a Babylonian reality that was unknown to Palestinian Tanaïm and Amoraïm.

    Sermon: Parshat Tzav & Shabbat HaGadol ערב פסח תשפ"א / March 27, 2021 Rabbi Mitchell Berkowitz B’nai Israel Congregation Rabba and Rabbi Zeira wanted to get together for a celebratory Purim feast. Following the talmudic dictum of ad d’lo yada, drinking until one cannot distinguish between Blessed Mordecai and Cursed Haman, Rabba and Rabbi Zeira drank too much. In their drunken stupor, Rabba killed Rabbi Zeira. Waking up the next day and realizing this grave mistake, Rabba prayed to God, and Rabbi Zeira was miraculously revived.1 It was a Purim miracle! Why am I telling a story about Purim on this eve of Passover? Two reasons. First of all, the events of the Purim story actually take place during the Pesach season. We celebrate Purim on the 14th of Adar, the date when the Jews of Persia were to be slaughtered, but instead were saved. But the narrative itself takes place during Nisan, even during Passover. Beyond the calendrical association, there is also the theme of miracles. Many of our holidays encompass the celebration of miraculous events: the oil on Hannukah, the saving of the Persian Jews on Purim, the plagues and the splitting of the Sea of Reeds on Passover. Miraculous events remind us that God’s metaphorical hand is at work in this world, and thereby stir within us a deeper sense of trust and faith in God. Let us turn to a different Passover miracle. According to Rabbi Ya’akov ben Asher, the author of the Arba’ah Turim, a great miracle happened for our ancestors in ancient Egypt shortly before the exodus.2 In the Torah, the Israelites were instructed to take a goat into their homes on the 10th day of Nisan, which coincided with Shabbat that year.
