TRIBUTE TO THE CLASS

Congratulations!

You are officially a member of the graduating Class of 2020. I look forward to telling you that in person when we are able to gather again.

The entire Cooper community is thrilled for you and so proud of all you have achieved. Neverthe- less, we understand deeply how bittersweet this moment is. None of us could have imagined a graduation season quite like this. Despite being apart for so much of your final academic semester, in many ways, this time of challenge and uncertainty bore witness to just how resilient, creative, and prepared you are.

Not long ago, you entered The Cooper Union as some of the most accomplished college applicants in the country. Now, you are part of a collective of some of the most impressive college graduates who have, no doubt, accomplished more than you thought you were capable of doing. Together, you represent problems solved, ideas realized, competitions won, work exhibited, structures built, curiosity revealed, potential discovered, perspectives and experi- ences shared, and life lived in one of the world’s most vibrant, most important cities. Your class will be remembered for all of this, and for your endurance and ability to pivot with grace and courage during this time of historic impact around the globe.

Now, you stand ready to make your mark, and while this moment is marked by uncertainty, it won’t stay that way. You are part of the generation who will help define our next steps. You now join our esteemed alumni who, over the course of more than a century and a half, have embraced all that our founder Peter Cooper imagined for our institution. He believed that education is the key to personal prosperity and civic virtue and should be available to all regardless of socio-economic background, race, or gender. All of these years later, his vision persists, and as the Class of 2020, you are ready to contribute to a world that needs you.

I celebrate you, and I especially look forward to the time when we can host you and your families in the Great Hall to celebrate in person with a formal Cooper Union commencement. Congratulations, you are now a lifetime member of a Cooper family that spans generations and the globe. I encourage you to make the most of that special relationship as Cooper stands ready to support you in your future endeavors, now and always.
