Cornard United F.C. History

Cornard United are believed to have formed in 1920, playing in the Sudbury & District League for four seasons. They then transferred to the Nayland & District League for the 1924/25 – 1927/28 seasons, winning the league in all four seasons they were in it. In 1928/29 they returned back to the Sudbury & District League. Nothing is known of the club between 1929 and when they reformed in 1964.

In 2014, Cornard United celebrated its Golden Jubilee, having been re-formed back in 1964. The club initially played in The Sudbury Sunday League, before joining Division Three of The Bury and District League in 1966.

They were promoted to Division Two at the end of their first season, and further promoted again at the end of the next season. In 1970 they transferred to Division Six of The Colchester & East League and were promoted to Division Five in 1972. After winning all 26 matches of the 1973-74 season they were promoted once again, and over the next few seasons, further success brought more promotions so by 1975 they had reached Division Two.

In 1976 the club switched leagues again, this time to Division One of The Essex and Border League. However, when this league was restructured two seasons later the club were moved down to the Second Division. They remained in the Second Division until 1983 when they were promoted back to Division One. In 1985- 86 they won promotion to the Premier Division, and in the 1988-89 season they won the league, the league cup and the Suffolk senior cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals, Sudbury Wanderers.

As a result of this success, the club was moved to Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won this division at the first attempt, and were promoted to The Premier Division, where they remained until 1996, when after a poor season they were relegated back to the First Division, where they have remained ever since.

Initially, the club played at the Great Cornard Recreation Ground, before moving to Great Cornard Upper School in 1975. It was not until 1982 that they moved to their current ground in Blackhouse Lane. The record attendance at this ground was set in 2001 when over 450 people watched a friendly match against West Ham United.

After many years running The Club, Chairman and Manager, Chris Symes, left the club during 2013 and Mark Hoskin took over the roles. He, in turn, has now moved on and the current Chairman is Harvey Doherty who took over in 2014 after spending 10 years as chairman of Cornard dynamos.

Cornard United F.C. History Cont…

The first team was managed by Paul Grainger, with Chris Tracy assisted by Jack Wignall taking over for 2015/16. Ry Lines & Liam Aves took up the reins partway through 2017/18 season which was very much a transition season. Family commitments have meant that Ry Lines stepped down ahead of the 2018/19 season. The current management team is Mathew Grove and Mike Schofield with Colin Athey as goal keeping coach.

Cornard United also run reserve and U18 teams. The Reserve Team playing in the Thurlow Nunn Reserve league, managed by experienced Ray Manser and Steve Rogers and the Under 18s play in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League, South Division and for 2018/19 has seen them managed by Alex Watson.

Visiting Club History – King’s Lynn Town Reserves Visiting Club History – Haverhill Borough Before the demise of King’s Lynn F.C. in November 2009, the Reserves played in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division.

The Club was reformed as King’s Lynn Town F.C. for the 2010/11 Season.

The Reserves have been extremely successful by winning the United Counties Reserve League Division 2 in season 2010/11 and the U.C.L. Reserves League Division 1 in season 2011/2012. Cup glory eluded them, in the same season, as they failed to win in the finals of the Reserve Supplementary Cup & the Reserve KO Cup .

For the season 2012/13 they transferred to the & District League where they were placed into Division one. They gained promotion in their first season, winning 20 out of their 28 games gaining promotion to the Premier Division, level 7 of the National League Pyramid, for the season 2013/14. They again gained promotion as league winners of the Premier League after a 17 game unbeaten run, to pip Netherton United to the title. Netherton gained a degree of revenge in beating Lynn in an 11-10 penalty shoot-out to win the Presidents shield.

After a successful application they moved back to the Eastern Counties League First Division for season 2014/15, level 6 of the National League Pyramid. Having had a very successful season, they finished in 5th position. In another very successful 2015/16 season, they once again achieved a 5th place finish. In the 2016/17 season, although finishing in 10th position, the Team won the First Division K.O. Cup in a hard fought Final against Wisbech St. Mary. In the 2017/18 Season the Young Linnets achieved a Creditable 6th position in the Eastern Counties League First Division.

The Reserve team priority as always is to try and blood youngsters into the first team, over recent seasons many of the younger players have been given an opportunity with the first team, who play at Level 3 of the National League Pyramid.

It is hoped the development process of young players will continue and grow, therefore adding to the playing squad of the Club.
