(Part Three) 1961-1990 Descended from millowner Henry Taylor and wife Sarah (nee Crosland), George Crosland Taylor and brother James were early entrepreneurs with an interest in everything electrical and mechanical. In 1906, George (always referred to as Crosland) bought two cars and a chassis, built by French company Morane, at the same time renting a warehouse in Chester, with the idea of assembling and selling the French designed cars. It soon became apparent that much more capital was needed and various people were persuaded to invest in the new company, including his French associate, Georges de Ville. -

The National Rail Enquiries (NRE) website appears to have coped well with very high volumes 2. The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies (TOCs) 3. The online journey planners on TOC and third-party websites did not generally reflect the contingency timetables in operation 4. Tickets continued to be available for sale online for many trains that would not run 5. Station displays appear to have reflected formal contingency timetables, except for Southeastern 6. Station displays and online Live Departure Boards did not always keep pace with events 7. The NRE call centres appear to have provided good information, but queuing times of 11 or 12 minutes were common. 1 The National Rail Enquiries appears to have coped well with very high volumes We saw no evidence that the NRE website crashed or was slower than usual, despite a large spike in volume (Chris Scoggins reported that the volume on 2 December was twice the previous record peak on 7 January 2010). 2 The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies NRE had to advise passengers not to use the journey planner for enquiries about East Coast, Southeastern and South West Trains. 6. Tackling Congestion Reducing the levels of congestion remains a fundamental objective in this Plan. This not only look at addressing congestion related problems currently being experienced in Southend but at managing expected traffic growth in the future. The latter is essential in ensuring future aspirations for the Borough are realised, especially plans for regeneration and intensification of the urban area. Southend already experiences significant delays on many sections of its key routes. Without intervention, overall traffic levels on local highway network during the morning peak hour are forecast to grow by over 20% by 2011 and 35% by 2016. As a result, peak hour traffic conditions will deteriorate significantly with journey times on strategic routes expected to increase by between 50% and 75% by 2011, and doubling by 2016. It is clear that the strategy for reducing congestion has synergies with the transport measures and policies identified to deliver other shared priorities, namely accessibility, safer roads, better air quality and quality of life. Improvement in terms of accessibility and safety will make alternatives to the car more attractive, and similarly reducing traffic levels and congestion will likely reduce numbers of accidents and impacts on air quality. An Overview to Achieving the Shared Priority The LTP strategy will help deliver improved and more reliable journey times for all road users and seek to redress the balance of the transport system by making non-car modes a far more attractive alternative to the car for many trips. The strategy is based on managing the existing network, as well as reinforcing and strengthening measures and policies aimed at influencing people’s travel behaviour and ultimately promoting sensible travel choices. -

2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020. -

Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties For those actively involved in or supporting the preservation of London buses, coaches and trolleybuses of the past Here is a nice wintry shot of RT 1426, one of the Country area's Cravens-bodied examples, waiting to go to home to Windsor from Uxbridge, long ago, via the picturesque-sounding Iver Heath, George Green, Upton Lea and more mundane Wexham Road, Slough and Eton. I cannot speak for those places at the time the photograph was taken, but in more recent times it has been hard to see anything remotely rural, bucolic or delightful about any of them, and Upton Lea is nothing but a large and uninspiring housing estate on the edge of Slough. Newsletter 162 February 2020 Opening Lines First of all, many thanks to all those “Friends” who kindly sent us seasonal greetings at what is nowadays regarded as the “festive” season. These are of course warmly reciprocated. Thanks also to those many individuals who contribute to this monthly mayhem. All contributions are gratefully received and as many as possible are used. It matters not if you send a couple of lines or several pages, it all helps to keep us all in touch. I would also now ask vehicle owners to think about keeping us posted, especially in the case of those buses and coaches which rarely, if ever, appear in public. Many members like to know that these “ghost” buses still exist and are being cared for, or stored, or even under extensive restoration. -

Fleet Archive 2020 15 March 2020 Repaints last week included Optare Solo M890/Optare 628 (NK61 DBZ) into “Little Coasters” livery. Volvo B9TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 6004 (NK11 BHE) has also lost its branding for the “Red Arrows”, having been stripped of all vinyls, ahead of the introduction of new vehicles to this service in May. There were no fleet movements last week. 8 March 2020 Repaints last week included Mercedes Citaro 0350N/Mercedes Citaro 5278 (NK07 KPN) and 5279 (NK07 KPO) into the 2019 fleet livery. Scania N94UD/East Lancs OmniDekka 6143 (YN04 GKA) is no longer a float/reserve vehicle and now forms part of the main fleet allocation at Riverside. It has replaced former East Yorkshire Volvo B7TL/Plaxton President 6935 (X508 EGK) which has suffered defects uneconomical to repair. Float Optare Solo M890/Optare 636 (NK61 FMD) is now allocated to Percy Main to provide cover for the remaining “Little Coasters” branded Optare Solo repaints. Scania L94UB/Wright Solar 5226 (NK54 NVZ) has now been withdrawn from service at Riverside and, together with 5231 (NK55 OLJ), has transferred to East Yorkshire on temporary loan. 1 March 2020 The final coach to be repainted as part of the ongoing work into the new Northern Coaching unit is Scania K340EB/Caetano Levante 7098 (JCN 822) into Voyager livery. Notable is the allocation of the registration mark JCN822: this registration mark being allocated to Leyland Tiger/Plaxton Paramount 7038 (E116 KFV) from 1990 to 1997 whilst a part of the Northern fleet in Voyager livery. Scania N94UD/East Lancs OmniDekka 6143 (YN04 GKA) has transferred from Chester-le-Street to Riverside, as a float/reserve vehicle. -

LT000605/005 - Description of the New Administrative Offices of the Underground Group of Companies By the late 1920s, the Underground Electric Railways Companies of London Ltd was anxious to house all of its ‘head office’ staff in one new purpose-built office block on the site of the old Metropolitan District Railway offices above St James’s Park station. The plans developed by Adams, Holden and Pearson, the architects commissioned by the Group, were radical: • 55 Broadway would be the tallest office building in London; • there would be a cruciform design - in place of the customary hollow rectangle format – which would offer staff more natural daylight in wings projecting from a central core housing lifts, staircases and essential services; and • Contemporary artists would be invited to sculpt decorative features directly onto the stone facade. As detailed in this reprint of a 1929 brochure about the building, 55 Broadway was constructed between 1927 and 1929. 700 reinforced concrete piles sunk to an average depth of 40 feet below basement level support the building. Nineteen load-bearing steel girders span the railway, and special insulation was used to reduce vibration from the trains. Above ground, the building was constructed around a steel girder skeleton and faced with 78,000 cubic feet of high quality Portland stone. The building has a bold appearance, enhanced by progressive stepping back above the sixth, eighth and ninth floors – giving an uneven pyramid effect. The clock tower, 174 feet high, has a similar stepped back effect. Granite for the ground floor came from Norway whilst the Travertine marble used in the interior came from Italy.
