    Ridgewell Airfield Commemorative Association Happy Bottom 70 years ago this month a famous American actor came to Ridgewell. Fresh from filming ‘Mr. Winkle Goes to War’, Hollywood star, Edward G. Robinson, arrived to christen a new B-17 in honour of his wife. On 5 July 1944, Ridgewell came to a standstill. Not just for the war, but for movie actor Edward G. Robinson (alias "Rico" Bandello, a small-time crook from the movie, Little Caesar) who’d arrived to christen a new B- 17G which had recently been assigned to the 532nd Bomb Squadron. Base Chaplain James Good Brown was one of the first to greet him. He was left suitably impressed. “What a man!” Brown later wrote. “Of all the actors who came to the base, he showed the most human interest. He was never acting. He just wanted to walk around the base talking to the President—Dave Osborne men, and the men wanted to talk to him.” Chairman—Jim Tennet Robinson broke his gangster persona making the watching Treasurer—Jenny Tennet Secretary—Mike Land men howl with laughter when he announced that he was Membership Secretary—Alan Steel naming the new aircraft ‘Happy Bottom’ after his wife, Historian—Chris Tennet Gladys, which he cleverly mispronounced, ‘Glad Ass’. I hope to give the reader a glimpse of what life was like for those who have lived here throughout the ages and how, by using the Forest, they have physically changed it over the centuries. The Romans, Saxons and Normans have each played their part, while the Forest we know today is one of the few surviving examples of Medieval woodland management. The Tudor monarchs and their courtiers frequently visited the Forest, wh ile in the 18th century the grandeur of Wanstead House attracted sight-seers from far and wide. The common people, meanwhile, were mostly poor farm labourers who were glad of the free produce they could obtain from the Forest. None of the Forest ponds are natural . some of them having been made accidentally when sand and gravel were extracted . while others were made by Man for a variety of reasons.

  • 6. Tackling Congestion
    6. Tackling Congestion Reducing the levels of congestion remains a fundamental objective in this Plan. This not only look at addressing congestion related problems currently being experienced in Southend but at managing expected traffic growth in the future. The latter is essential in ensuring future aspirations for the Borough are realised, especially plans for regeneration and intensification of the urban area. Southend already experiences significant delays on many sections of its key routes. Without intervention, overall traffic levels on local highway network during the morning peak hour are forecast to grow by over 20% by 2011 and 35% by 2016. As a result, peak hour traffic conditions will deteriorate significantly with journey times on strategic routes expected to increase by between 50% and 75% by 2011, and doubling by 2016. It is clear that the strategy for reducing congestion has synergies with the transport measures and policies identified to deliver other shared priorities, namely accessibility, safer roads, better air quality and quality of life. Improvement in terms of accessibility and safety will make alternatives to the car more attractive, and similarly reducing traffic levels and congestion will likely reduce numbers of accidents and impacts on air quality. An Overview to Achieving the Shared Priority The LTP strategy will help deliver improved and more reliable journey times for all road users and seek to redress the balance of the transport system by making non-car modes a far more attractive alternative to the car for many trips. The strategy is based on managing the existing network, as well as reinforcing and strengthening measures and policies aimed at influencing people’s travel behaviour and ultimately promoting sensible travel choices.
