Peter 704 566 Swannington 602 636 670 705 Yelverton INTRODUCTION Several years ago, one of the Society's members Mr. Philip Hamlin set himself the task of compiling an index of Norfolk Marriages for the period 1801-1837 from the original Parish Registers and associated sources at the Norfolk Record Office. By the time he moved away from the area he had covered the 705 Norfolk parishes having relevant marriage records plus 25 Suffolk (border) parishes and his index consisted of scores of thousands of entries on slips of paper. In 1997 Mr. Hamlin gave his approval for the NFHS to computerise his index. Equipment was provided and eventually a small team of volunteers in the Hampshire area, close to Mr. Hamlin’s home, began copying his index slips into a computer spreadsheet format. The team spent the next 4 years transcribing to computer more than 100,000 marriage events, extending their remit to include the Norwich Marriages 1813-37 a transcript of which had been published in book form by the Society in 1982. In June 2001 the team completed its task and the computer files ( format) were added to the resources of the Society’s library. In view of the strong demand for the index to be made more widely available it was subsequently converted to PDF format and, in August 2002, published as a CD (version 1.0). Valuable experience was thus gained and we were encouraged but the good reception the CD received to carry out further work to improve and extend the index. This CD (version 1.1) contains an extra 946 marriages grouped in a supplement at the end of the main collection. These records have been transcribed by Mrs. P. Mason from films supplied by the Norfolk Record Office and comprise the following:- The marriages at Gorleston between January 1824 and June 1837 (857 events). The marriages at Horstead between 1801 and 1814 inclusive (22 events). The Quaker marriages in Norfolk between 1800 and 1836 inclusive (67 events). NB. The latter were in the form of an original ‘digest’ which was prepared by the ‘Friends’ when they were required to send their original registers to the GRO in 1837/8. The digest contains several variations in the spelling of names and these have been recorded in a 'notes' column in the present transcript. We believe the index is now complete for those Norfolk parishes which have marriage records for the relevant period, however, neither the Society nor the database makers provide any warranty in respect to either its accuracy or completeness.
