Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries. Digital images of many Norfolk parish registers, 1538-c. 1900, are available online on the following websites: Find my Past, Ancestry, The Genealogist and FamilySearch (on the latter site, use the browse by location options to find 'England, Norfolk Parish Registers, 1538-1900'). To find parish registers and other records in the NRO catalogue, see http://nrocatalogue.norfolk.gov.uk/index.php/set-search-parish-records. Modern Transcripts and Indexes These include both published and unpublished transcripts in printed, typescript, manuscript, microfilm and CD formats. Many are available on open shelves in the searchroom, and the printed transcripts may also be available through libraries. The dates given for transcripts sometimes predate those of the earliest surviving parish register. Usually this is because the transcriber Norfolk Record Office©2001, 2006 Last saved on: 16 August 2021 has included information from register bills which may survive from an earlier date. Archdeacons' and Bishop's Transcripts (Register Bills) These are copies of parish registers made annually by each incumbent: most are available on microfiche, the remainder are available on microfilm. The dates of the transcripts in this list are covering dates only and conceal large gaps, particularly before 1725 and after 1837. The Plan builds on work undertaken by the Acle Village Team which developed the Acle Village Economic Masterplan through detailed research, analysis and consultation. This work has informed the development of Acle Neighbourhood Plan as well as that gathered during the extensive consultation undertaken as part of the Neighbourhood Planning process. This Consultation Statement is designed to meet the requirements set out in the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012 for Consultation Statements. This document sets out the consultation process employed in the production of the Acle Neighbourhood Plan, it also demonstrates how the requirements of Regulations 14 and 15 of the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012 have been satisfied.

  • Norfolk Through a Lens
NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

  • Tributary Farmland
NORFOLK COAST COAST AONB AONB – Integrated – Integrated Landscape Landscape Guidance Guidance tributary farmland 1 tributary farmland Integrated landscape character MAP 23a - Landscape Character Type - Tributary Farmland Key Plan Tributary Farmland is typically an expansive landscape of open, gently rolling farmland. To the west, the farmland is underlain by deep drifts of Boulder Clay, which smother the underlying Chalk, but to the east of Sheringham, the soils of the Tributary Farmland have developed from sandier deposits, formed on drifts of brown sandy Norwich Brickearth underlain by the shelly sands and gravels of the Norwich Crag formation. Historically the area has been subdivided into relatively small tenanted and owner-occupied landholdings, based loosely around villages and this historic landownership pattern is reflected in the rather unregimented pattern of relatively small, irregularly shaped fields, loosely structured settlements and many scattered, isolated farmsteads and cottages. The majority of the landscape was not farmed as open fields, but was enclosed in a piecemeal fashion, over centuries. The Tributary Farmland has a less regulated and tightly structured landscape pattern than areas of farmland where Parliamentary Enclosure was more dominant, but over the years, the differences have become less marked as hedgerow removal and infill development within villages has led to larger, more geometric fields and a more nucleated settlement form. Arable field predominate, with areas of grassland in the smaller fields which are typically found on the fringes of settlements and individual rural properties. These fields often retain a strong sense of enclosure and echo the historic landscape pattern of a small-scale, more organic layout of fields, hedgerows and rural buildings.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ilBSTRAGT The Cromer Moraine forms a distinctive geographical region near the coast of the northern part of the County of Norfolk. A pro nounced characteristic of this region is the vridespread cover of heatb-land, far less extensive than in former times. This heathland appears in its turn to have developed from an original woodland cover which was destroyed by the depredations of man and his domesticated animals . It has been necessary first to delimit the region as accurately as possible and this has been accomplished by means of a detailed study of local topography and of well-sections. The earliest evidence of the location of heathland comes from tlie Domesday Survey and this has been confirmed by references to heathland in various other documents dovm to 1750. By the middle of the eighteenth century the new developments in agriculture^ or ’Norfolk Husbandry’ as it was called, became widely known and practised, resulting in this region in a greatly accelerated reclama tion of heathland; so that by the time of the Tithe Survey (183S-42) less than a hundred years later over 4000 acres of heath had been reclaimed.
