Railway and Transport Strategy Centre The Operator’s Story Appendix: London’s Story © World Bank / Imperial College London Property of the World Bank and the RTSC at Imperial College London Community of Metros CoMET The Operator’s Story: Notes from London Case Study Interviews February 2017 Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide a permanent record for the researchers of what was said by people interviewed for ‘The Operator’s Story’ in London. These notes are based upon 14 meetings between 6th-9th October 2015, plus one further meeting in January 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. Comments are not attributed to specific individuals, as agreed with the interviewees and TfL. However, in some cases it is noted that a comment was made by an individual external not employed by TfL (‘external commentator’), where it is appropriate to draw a distinction between views expressed by TfL themselves and those expressed about their organisation. -

Contracts Metroline: 18% are tendered for five years with a possible two year extension, based on Arriva: 18% performance against punctuality targets. In addition to earning revenue Stagecoach: 13% for the mileage we operate, we have the opportunity to earn Quality Incentive Contract bonuses if we meet these targets. -

Family history research at London Transport Museum Introduction This factsheet is for family historians researching ancestors who have connections with public transport in London. Many thousands of people have been employed across the different modes of transport over the years, but unfortunately relatively few records survive because there is no business or statutory requirement to keep them beyond a few years. The guide to sources below is designed to help you identify surviving records that may be related to your research. It tells you where they are located and how you can access them. Questions at the end of this factsheet may also help you get started on your family history journey. Information about our collection and how to contact us or arrange a visit is on our Library page on the Museum website. Where to start To find relevant staff records, you first need to identify which company your ancestor might have worked for and the years when they may have been employed there. The London Passenger Transport Board (also known as London Transport) was formed in 1933. Before then, public transport in London was run by many different companies operating the buses, trams and underground railway lines. You might know your ancestor’s job from a certificate or photograph. If you know where they lived in London, you could use that as a starting point to identify their employer. Be aware though that in the past people often walked long distances to go to work. -

It is a plan with lots of big goals. It says that people’s health and quality of life are very important when we plan transport in London. The Mayor wants London to be a city that is home for more people and a better place for everyone to live in. 3 We spoke with lots of different people across London to help the Mayor get his plan right. This document sums up the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, which you can view at https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we- do/transport/our-vision-transport/mayors- transport-strategy-2018. Please note: There is not an Easy Read version of the long document. Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties For those actively involved in or supporting the preservation of London buses, coaches and trolleybuses of the past Here is a nice wintry shot of RT 1426, one of the Country area's Cravens-bodied examples, waiting to go to home to Windsor from Uxbridge, long ago, via the picturesque-sounding Iver Heath, George Green, Upton Lea and more mundane Wexham Road, Slough and Eton. I cannot speak for those places at the time the photograph was taken, but in more recent times it has been hard to see anything remotely rural, bucolic or delightful about any of them, and Upton Lea is nothing but a large and uninspiring housing estate on the edge of Slough. Life can be so disappointing at times! Photo by Michael Dryhurst. Newsletter 162 February 2020 Opening Lines First of all, many thanks to all those “Friends” who kindly sent us seasonal greetings at what is nowadays regarded as the “festive” season. These are of course warmly reciprocated. Thanks also to those many individuals who contribute to this monthly mayhem. All contributions are gratefully received and as many as possible are used. It matters not if you send a couple of lines or several pages, it all helps to keep us all in touch. I would also now ask vehicle owners to think about keeping us posted, especially in the case of those buses and coaches which rarely, if ever, appear in public. Many members like to know that these “ghost” buses still exist and are being cared for, or stored, or even under extensive restoration. -

Anticipated acquisition by London and South Eastern Railway, a wholly owned subsidiary of Govia Limited, of the Integrated Kent Rail Franchise The OFT's decision on reference under section 33(1) given on 28 March 2006. Full text of decision published 4 April 2006. PARTIES 1. Govia Limited (Govia) is a rail franchise holding company. It was formed as a joint venture between The Go-Ahead Group Plc (Go-Ahead) and Keolis (UK) Limited (a subsidiary of Keolis SA), which have shareholdings in Govia of 65 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. Govia will acquire the Integrated Kent Rail Franchise through its wholly owned subsidiary, London and South Eastern Railway (LSER). 2. The Integrated Kent Rail Franchise (IKF) will include passenger rail services on the network currently operated by South Eastern Trains (SET), a subsidiary of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA). IKF is a commuter network serving several areas around the South East of England, parts of Greater London and several London termini. IKF will also include new domestic high-speed services from London St Pancras, making use of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. SET's turnover for the year ended 31 March 2005 was £443.3 million. TRANSACTION 3. Govia (through LSER) was named the preferred bidder for IKF on 30 November 2005. IKF is due to commence on 1 April 2006 and will run for six years, although the contract allows for an extension of two years if performance targets are met. Alternatively, in the event of a delay to the start of the new high speed services using the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the franchise may be extended by two years. -

Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties For those actively involved in or supporting the preservation of London buses, coaches and trolleybuses of the past The photo above shows RT 113 at RAF Coningsby in 2000 when we celebrated the vehicle's 60th, it having been taken into LPTB stock on 7th March 1940. I asked if the RAF Memorial flight would allow us to photograph their MKIIA Spitfire next to the bus, the aircraft having been been built in March 1940. By coincidence "XT" is carried by both bus and fighter. Photo and caption by Tony Beard Newsletter 166 June 2020 Opening Lines With the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of VE Day just over (as I write this) the arrival of this month's cover picture in my e-mail in-box seemed very relevant. There is no prize for spotting the RT somewhere in the photograph... I have long thought that the RT, the 1938 tube stock, the Douglas DC-3 Dakota and the Supermarine Spitfire were all classic examples of things designed to look right and perform right and I have yet to be persuaded otherwise. In many ways, no doubt, modern artefacts are more technologically advanced and “safer” however you choose to define that, but we appear, sadly, to have lost the ability to make things look attractive as well as functional. The latest double-deckers in particular as well as tramcars and multiple-unit trains, be they here or in other countries, all seem to have been designed (if they were truly “designed” in the real meaning of the word) to be visually offensive and as if that were not bad enough, to be adorned with inappropriate liveries in clashing colours and finished off with idiotic names used by their owners or operators. -

Overview Each day, more than 31 million journeys take place on the trains, buses and Underground Tube™ of London. Transport for London (TfL) runs the public transportation network for one of the world’s busiest cities. TfL manages the varied systems that move Londoners—and millions of visitors—safely and efficiently to their destinations. For more than a decade, TfL has used Oyster, a pre-loaded contactless smartcard, as its ticketless payment system for fares on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line and most National Rail services in London.
