These came to be known as “heavy cruisers” because of their size and later because of their armament. All of these ships were built under limitations resulting from a series of naval treaties, and thus they were also known as “treaty cruisers.” These ships gave valuable service during World War II and saw action in all the major battles in the Pacific. A separate volume will cover the heavy cruisers built during and after the war that saw service not only in 1941–45, but also later in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. -

This is a short history of the Royal Naval establishment H.M.S. Mercury. The difference between writing a history of a person or a ship, as opposed to an establishment, is the establishment does not move. It does not interact with other objects or people as a ship or person would. Therefore, this history concentrates on the structural aspects of the establishment and the reasons for their existence. The ‘blood’ of the establishment is the people who populate it. These people changeover the years, arriving and leaving and sometimes coming back. They provide some aspects of the character of the establishment and in return the establishment imposes its character on the people. Mercury was a very popular establishment. Its isolation from the main command area of Portsmouth was a bane to some and a blessing to others. It made the Communicators feel different, unique and gave them a certain pride in their branch and their work. They knew, while serving on a distant station or ship, if they had a problem, Mercury would help them out. -

On 9 June , she was sunk as a block ship to defend a mulberry harbor established on Omaha Beach. In design the sisters were nearly identical to the King George V class , bearing the same ten Mk V New for British dreadnoughts, the four Iron Duke -class sisters were fairly separated from each other in their careers. -

College at Geneseo Geneseo, NY 14454 ABSTRACT: Weapons systems’ common compromise of offensive power, defensive protection, and mobility was expressed as a sensational innovation in naval architecture with the completion of HMS Dreadnought in 1906, when Great Power rivalry guaranteed an ensuing arms race. The latter entailed steady improvements of power, protection, and propulsion, all requiring a larger and more costly platform to incorporate even slight advantages. The large dreadnought fleets built by Britain and Germany incorporated few improvements in tactics, command and control. Lengthening big gun ranges exceeded their limits of effectiveness, and hit rates at long range fell to 3 percent or less, yielding probable stalemate other than the destruction of obsolete vessel types and vulnerable hybrids. Advances in destructive power, protection, and speed led inexorably to the increased size and cost of capital ships, climaxed by their inconclusive clash at Jutland in 1916. As a weapon system, the battleship was necessarily modified to cope with air and undersea attack, with imperfect success. Such new vulnerabilities for the battleship echoed the denouement of French armored and mounted knights by English archers and men-at-arms at Agincourt. Perfect weapon symmetry and its related spatial deployment are apt to be transitory phenomena in the practice of modern warfare. The US Navy was seen as an upstart by much of the international community, after it experienced a rapid increase in strength in the wake of the Spanish- American War. American naval expansion paralleled that of another upstart naval power, Germany, whose navy also saw meteoric growth in this period. What is little known is that a tacit naval arms race developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries between these two powers, due primarily to soured foreign relations caused by a rivalry over colonial territory in the Pacific and an economic rivalry in Latin America. -

Victory at Sea in World War One By Scott Elaurant© January 2008 Introduction This is intended as an expansion to the Victory at Sea game for World War One battles. British Royal Navy and German High Seas Fleets ship statistics are listed, including most ships that fought at the Battle of Jutland. Ship Special Rules Limited Submersible – World War One submarines were only able to dive for shorter periods and stayed at shallow depths. If they are spotted at periscope depth they may be rammed. If a World War One submarine with this feature attempts to fire a torpedo, on that turn or the turn after enemy ships may sink it by ramming. Move the ramming vessel into contact with the submarine. Roll the attacking vessels to hit number or higher (+1 if ramming from side) to sink the submarine. The submarine also rolls against its to hit number. If it rolls a hit the submarine is also sunk, but one point of damage (no save) is done to the ship as well. Vulnerable Magazines – These ships have either weak turret top armour or lack magazine fire protection. Any critical hit resulting in a Weapons hit causes a Magazine Explosion on a roll of 4 to 6 for ships with this rule. This does not apply if the enemy weapon is rated as “weak”. Points System for World war One This point system is designed to balance Victory at Sea games for World War One Ships. It still assumes that the same level system will operate.
