How did the young Republic deal with its dependency on the Netherlands for development aid after 1975? Was Paramaribo following a certain foreign policy strategy of a path or did it merely react towards internal and external events? What were the decision making processes in defi ning the foreign policy course and who was involved in these processes? And why was a proposal An analysis of the foreign policy discussed to hand back the right of an independent foreign and defence policy to a Dutch Commonwealth government in the early 1990s? of Suriname from 1975 to 1991 These questions are examined here in depth, in the fi rst comprehensive analysis wof Suriname’s foreign policy from 1975 to 1991. The book provides readers interested in Caribbean and Latin American affairs with a detailed account of Suriname’s external relations. Moreover, the young Republic may stand as a case study, as it confronted the diffi culties and challenges that small developing states often face. Roger Janssen (1967), born in the Dutch-German border region of Cleve, migrated to Australia in 1989. He received his education as a historian at the University of Western Australia where he obtained a Ph.D.

  • Comments on the Dutch Edition
Comments on the Dutch edition Paul Nouwen in his foreword to the Dutch edition: ‘In this beautiful description we follow how the search of the movement went. I hope the readers of this book will feel strengthened to promote the changes that are needed and to help people around them.’ Katholiek Nieuwsblad: ‘The ideal to forgive for a better world is still of paramount importance... a near revolutionary thought in the Netherlands of today.’ Friesch Dagblad: ‘This book is honest and it holds a mirror for the reader. It describes the essence of the movement, without being yet another catechism. The principles come together in the Golden Rule: Treat others as you want them to treat you.’ Bert Endedijk, publisher of the book in the Netherlands, director of Kok/ten Have: ‘The author describes an important movement. She places herself in a vulnerable position by looking critically at the movement which is dear to her.’ Father Bert ten Berge, SJ: ‘This book was my spiritual reading for my retreat. It gave me a lot of food for thought.’ Reaching for a new world Initiatives of Change seen through a Dutch window Hennie de Pous-de Jonge CAUX BOOKS First published in 2005 as Reiken naar een nieuwe wereld by Uitgeverij Kok – Kampen The Netherlands This English edition published 2009 by Caux Books Caux Books Rue de Panorama 1824 Caux Switzerland © Hennie de Pous-de Jonge 2009 ISBN 978-2-88037-520-1 Designed and typeset in 10.75pt Sabon by Blair Cummock Printed by Imprimerie Pot, 78 Av. des Communes-Réunies, 1212 Grand-Lancy, Switzerland Contents Preface

  • Decolonising the Caribbean Dutch Policies in a Comparative Perspective
Gert Oostindie & Amsterdam University Press Gert Oostindie & Inge Klinkers Inge Klinkers Much has been written on the post-war decolonisation in the Caribbean, but rarely from a truly comparative Decolonising perspective, and seldom with serious attention to the former Dutch colonies of Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The present study bridges both the gaps. In their analysis of Dutch decolonisation policies since the 1940s, the authors discuss not only political processes, but also development aid, the Dutch Caribbean Caribbean exodus to the metropolis and cultural an- tagonisms. A balance is drawn both of the costs and benefits of independence in the Caribbean and of the Decolonising the Caribbean Dutch Policies in a outlines and results of the policies pursued in the non- sovereign Caribbean by France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Comparative Perspective Gert Oostindie is director of the kitlv/Royal Nether- lands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Stud- ies and holds a chair in Caribbean Studies at Utrecht University. Inge Klinkers successfully defended her PhD thesis on Caribbean decolonisation policies at Utrecht University and is now an editor for various academic presses. In 2001, Oostindie and Klinkers published the three-volume study, Knellende Koninkrijksbanden. Het Nederlandse dekolonisatiebeleid in de Caraïben, 1940-2000 and the abridged version Het Koninkrijk in de Caraïben, 1940-2000, both with Amsterdam University Press. www.aup.nl Amsterdam University Press Decolonising the Caribbean Decolonising the Caribbean Dutch Policies in a Comparative Perspective Gert Oostindie & Inge Klinkers Amsterdam University Press Cover map: the borders between the various countries in the Guyanas are disputed. The present map does not express the judgement of all countries involved, nor of the authors.
