12126 SVO-Brochure-2019.Pdf 1 Welcome to Soneva When we first built Soneva Fushi on the deserted island of Kunfunadhoo in the Maldives in 1995, we had no idea that our intensely personal vision of a locally crafted villa and environmentally responsible lifestyle would form the basis of a successful collection of world-class hotels, resorts and residences. But that’s exactly what happened. Soneva Fushi pioneered a trend for inspired luxury holidays. Soneva Kiri opened in Thailand in 2009 and became the first Soneva resort to offer private ownership to its discerning clientele. In 2011, Soneva became the first to offer luxury resort real estate for foreigners in the Maldives, with the launch of villa sales at Soneva Fushi. In 2016, a limited number of overwater and island villas became available for sale at Soneva’s newest resort, Soneva Jani. We are still the only company to offer private ownership options to foreigners in the Maldives. Private villa ownership was launched upon the request of our enthusiasts: Soneva guests that enjoy our Asian service philosophy, complemented by the harmony of the environment in which we operate. We hope that being a Soneva Villa Owner will be a wonderful experience for you, your family & friends… a place where your children grow up wise in the ways of nature, and where holidays become a much anticipated reunion with family and other villa owners. Not every Soneva guest will be a Soneva Villa Owner and for the discerning few who choose this deeper journey with us, thank you. 2 3 Inspiring a Lifetime of Rare Experiences Our Presence At the heart of the development and operation of each property is Soneva is a privately owned group of companies, backed by over 20 years of operational success, leading the world in the development our Intelligent Luxury ethos, creating unforgettable, enlightening of sustainable luxury resorts and private residences. Many of these are reaching or beyond their life expectancy, inefficient, or functionally obsolete (e.g., unable to accommodate large modern equipment). There is an urgent need to systematically replace these buildings to support the maintenance mission of the agency. By reviewing literature, green building standards and rating systems, and other DOT regulations, and by conducting two case studies as part of an ODOT research project (SPR 792), best practices were identified to be considered when constructing new or renovating existing stations.

  • The Shark Fisheries of the Maldives
The Shark Fisheries of the Maldives A review by R.C. Anderson and Hudha Ahmed Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, Republic of Maldives and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. 1993 Tuna fishing is the most important fisheries activity in the Maldives. Shark fishing is oneof the majorsecondary fishing activities. A large proportion of Maldivian fishermen fish for shark at least part-time, normally during seasons when the weather is calm and tuna scarce. Most shark products are exported, with export earnings in 1991 totalling MRf 12.1 million. There are three main shark fisheries. A deepwater vertical longline fishery for Gulper Shark (Kashi miyaru) which yields high-value oil for export. An offshore longline and handline fishery for oceanic shark, which yields fins andmeat for export. And an inshore gillnet, handline and longline fishery for reef and othe’r atoll-associated shark, which also yields fins and meat for export. The deepwater Gulper Shark stocks appear to be heavily fished, and would benefit from some control of fishing effort. The offshore oceanic shark fishery is small, compared to the size of the shark stocks, and could be expanded. The reef shark fisheries would probably run the risk of overfishing if expanded very much more. Reef shark fisheries are asource of conflict with the important tourism industry. ‘Shark- watching’ is a major activity among tourist divers. It is roughly estimated that shark- watching generates US $ 2.3 million per year in direct diving revenue. It is also roughly estimated that a Grey Reef Shark may be worth at least one hundred times more alive at a dive site than dead on a fishing boat.
