These notes are based upon 14 meetings between 6th-9th October 2015, plus one further meeting in January 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. Comments are not attributed to specific individuals, as agreed with the interviewees and TfL. However, in some cases it is noted that a comment was made by an individual external not employed by TfL (‘external commentator’), where it is appropriate to draw a distinction between views expressed by TfL themselves and those expressed about their organisation. -

This has been the subject of much correspondence from those afflicted with the problem and we are very fortunate to have a number of people with us this morning who are going to be able to speak to how it has been impacting on them and their neighbourhood and their neighbours. We are also very fortunate to have some guests from Transport for London (TfL) who are, hopefully, going to be able to explain some of the ins and outs of the solutions and how quickly they may or may not be applied. Just to introduce our guests, we have Richard Collins. You are very welcome. He is from the Barbican Association, which has a working group on Underground issues. We have Ian Kitson, who is a resident in Marylebone. You are very welcome as well. We have Liz Lawson, who is from the Archway Tube Noise Action Group. We have Razana Yoosuf, who is a resident in Mornington Crescent. We also have with us from TfL Helen Woolston [Sustainability Co-ordinator, London Underground] and Duncan Weir [Head of Operational Upgrades & Asset Development, London Underground]. London Overground Customer Charter February 2009 MAYOR Transport OF LONDON for London LO DEC 08 CCharter DL FINAL.indd 1 7/1/09 15:13:15 Our commitment We aim to deliver the best possible service to London Overground customers by providing a safe, reliable, welcoming and value for money service at all times. Since we started in November 2007 we provided staff at all our stations during operating hours and accept Oyster pay as you go across the London Overground network. All our stations have had a deep clean and the safety and security on the network has improved. During 2009 and 2010 we will be replacing our existing fleet. The new trains will have increased capacity, air conditioning, on board audio and visual announcements and provide a much improved travelling environment. We will also be completely refurbishing all of our stations and making many track and signalling improvements. In 2010 we will be opening the newly extended line which runs between Dalston Junction in the north and New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the south. By 2011 this line will be further extended from Dalston Junction to Highbury & Islington. In this Customer Charter, we set out to explain: • the minimum standards we expect to achieve • how we will compensate you if things go wrong • how we will tell you about our performance • how you can contact us with your suggestions and concerns 2 We will review this charter every two years in consultation with London TravelWatch, Transport for London and other relevant bodies. A GOOD PUBLIC TRANSPORT EXPERIENCE 129 Chapter four – A good public transport experience London has one of the most extensive public transport networks in the world, with more than 9 million trips made every day by bus, tram, Tube, train and river boat. Use of the public transport system has increased by 65 per cent since 2000, largely because of enhanced services and an improved customer experience. An easy to use and accessible public transport system is an essential part of the Healthy Streets Approach as it gives people alternatives to car use for journeys that are not possible on foot or by cycle. By providing the most efficient and affordable option for journeys that are either impractical or too long to walk or cycle, public transport has helped to reduce Londoners’ dependency on cars during the past 15 years and this trend must continue. 13 Responses from Stakeholders
13 Responses from stakeholders 13.1 Introduction 13.1.1 This chapter presents a summary of the responses submitted by stakeholders. As outlined in Chapter 2, stakeholders were classified by type according to their area of interest / influence. Section 13.3 identifies the different types of stakeholders represented in the questionnaire and free-format response data. 13.1.2 The most frequent type of stakeholders is business representatives. These account for over half of all stakeholder questionnaire responses (69 responses). A number of residents’ / community groups (13%), political stakeholders (8%), transport users (8%) and health stakeholders (5%) also participated in the consultation by completing the questionnaire. 13.1.3 TfL received free-format responses in the form of letters and emails from 41 different stakeholders. These responses were ‘free-format’ in the sense that they did not directly address the questions in the online questionnaire. 13.1.4 A number of political stakeholders (including MPs, councillors and political parties) responded via free-format response (18), as did London boroughs (six). Four transport groups and three campaign groups are also represented in the free-format summaries. 13.1.5 This chapter presents the analysis of stakeholder responses to the closed questions in the online questionnaire and a summary of the free-format stakeholder responses. 13.2 Closed questionnaire responses 13.2.1 As shown in Figure 13-1, the majority (95%) of stakeholders expressed support or strong support for the principle of extending the Bakerloo line into southeast London from its current end point at Elephant & Castle (Question 5). 13.2.2 The majority (86%) of stakeholders stated that they support the extension on the basis that it would enable new development in southeast London.
