The Case of the Elementary School in Arnaia, Chalkidiki Vasiliki Pachta 1,*,†, Vasiliki Terzi 2,† and Evangeli Malandri 1 1 Lab. of Building Materials, School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece 2 Institute of Statics and Dynamics, School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece; [email protected] (V.T.); [email protected] (E.M.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +30-2310995882 † These authors contributed equally to this work. Abstract: Historic school buildings were built during the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century, using the traditional and locally available building materials and techniques, and most of them still function as schools. Because of the requirements arising from their constant use, there is an intense interest in their structural and energy integration, while there is limited research on the tangible and intangible values they encompass. In this study, an effort has been made to assess the historical, architectural, constructional and structural aspects of a historic school building located in the town of Arnaia, in the mountainous part of Chalkidiki peninsula, Northern Greece. The study included on-site inspection, architectural overview, determination and mapping of the constructional materials and techniques applied, as well as investigation of the preservation state of the building. Additionally, a structural analysis of the system was performed through a three-dimensional finite element model. All research data was comparatively evaluated, in order to identify the principles governing its physiognomy and structure. -

Eagles Palace Excursions Proposals
Eagles Palace Excursions Proposals The last prong of Halkidiki (Athos Peninsula) is the most beautiful of all three. Civilization has not intruded into the Holy Mountain, which is in- habited solely by monks. MOUNT ATHOS REPUBLIC The last prong of Halkidiki (Athos Peninsula) is the most beautiful of all three. Civilization has not intruded into the Holy Mountain, which is inhabited solely by monks. This magnificent peninsula has been the sole province of men dedicated to the worship of God and the Virgin for well over a thousand years. Nowadays the number of functioning monasteries has dwindled to 20 with a population of approximately 1,700 brethren. Sur- rounded by an incalculable wealth of ecclesiastical treasure, rare icons and libraries stocked with precious manuscripts, they live simply according to a strict regime of prayer and labor untouched by modern frivolities. Athos, a monument of international cultural heritage, is not only a real museum of the Byzantine art, but a living center or the Christian Orthodox religion. More and more people are visiting “Agion Oros” for spiritual, religious and scientific interests. Since women are not allowed in (due to tradition), and even men need special permission to enter, an easy way to admire and experience Athos, is by taking a day boat cruise along the coast from Eagles Palace. DAILY CRUISE WITH THE HOTELS MOTOR SAILING BOAT The hotels sailing boat can be hired privately and make daily trips like: * a cruise along the coast of the unique Mount Athos republic. This will give you the opportunity to admire a lot of the famous monasteries of Mount Athos or * a day cruise to the near Robinson island and the beautiful island of Ammouliani with a stop to visit the village of Ammouliani and / or to swim in the very clear waters of Karagatsi bay or * a daily cruise to the second finger of Halkidiki peninsula and the small enchanting island Vourvourou can also be arranged. -
'Agonistic Pluralism' and 'The Political'
Dispatches from Greece: ‘‘We were sleeping as Individuals and we woke up as Citizens’’ Democracy and Development Revisited: Exploring openings through the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki May, 2015 Master Thesis in International Development and Management Author: Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou Supervisor: Elsa Coimbra Styliani-Mirsini Kazakou LUMID- MSc Thesis Abstract The universalistic understanding of the subject embedded in the Liberal and Marxist traditions together with contrasting accounts of unconstrained agency, fail to explain the contingencies of ground responses that call for social change. The paper makes a case for the opening of the understanding of the human subject when placed in the theoretical terrain of radical political philosophy elaborated by thinkers such as C. Castoriadis, M. Hardt & A. Negri, E. Laclau and C. Mouffe. The conceptualisation of the human subject as both a creative and constrained agent rescues it from deterministic excesses and accounts of unlimited power. Within these confines, the purpose of this paper was to explore the project of autonomy as conceptualised by Castoriadis and relate it to a new articulation of human development. Through a case study of the social movement in Skouries, Chalkidiki, the democratic openings realised by the creative human praxis and the re-politicisation of individuals, were explored. The self-organised communities call for a creation of public spaces where deliberation and self-reflection can take place, resulting in a re-thinking of the developmental paradigm applied during the years of Greek austerity. The question that remains open is how the new social relations manifested in the area can foster principles of social and individual autonomy in all spheres of social life. -
