It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value. Dinner at hotel and overnight May 28, Sunday: Athens - Delphi – Kalambaka, Kastraki Hotel We depart for Delphi, the center of the Ancient World – the “Omphalos (Navel of the Earth). After lunch, we continue to Meteora, the Byzantine monasteries of Central Greece. Dinner at hotel and overnight May 29, Monday: Meteora – Kalambaka After morning Mass, we visit the Meteora Monasteries, among striking scenery, perched on top of huge rocks, which seem to be suspended in mid-air, stand ageless monasteries, where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. Lunch at Kalambaka. Dinner and overnight at hotel May 30, Tuesday: Kalambaka – Veria – Thessaloniki – Kavala, Airotel Galaxy After morning mass and breakfast, we drive to Kavala. On the way, we’ll stop at Veria, where “they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17). Lunch on the way to Thessaloniki. Dinner and overnight at hotel May 31, Wednesday: Kavala - Phillippi – Kavala St. Paul landed in Kavala with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. We will see the Roman Aqueduct and the ruins of the Acropolis in this beautifully located city. The vigorous and mostly Gentile Church he founded here in 50 AD caused him much grief and prompted him to write at least four letters to them. Lunch at a nearby restaurant. Dinner and overnight June 4, Sunday: Corinth – Free Day Breakfast at the hotel, a chance for study with Fr. Kamal, lunch and dinner at a nearby restaurant and overnight. June 5, Monday: Corinth – Athens, Titania Hotel Breakfast and departure to Athens. Legend has it that wolves used to seek refuge on this hill. That probably explains its name "Lycabettus: the hill walked by wolves". We will have the chance to visit the visible from all over the city, the brilliantly white, 18th-century church of St. George. Next stop will be visiting the famous Byzantine and Christian Museum and an Icon workshop. Lunch at a nearby restaurant. Grazing time, resting and ruminating time, distance travel and air temperature in relation to pasturing month and altitude were examined. It was remarked significant effect (P<0.001) of the pasturing month on grazing time, and resting time of sheep. Mean grazing time was greater in the lowland (315.71 min/day ±4.57) than in the mountainous pasture (283.57 min/day ±4.79). On the contrary, the resting time and the distance travel of sheep were shorter in the lowland pasture. The resting time had significant (P<0.01) positive relationship to air temperature (r=0.777). • A Report on Preventing Any Further Desecration of the Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki, Greece Findings, Concerns and Recommendations
A Report on Preventing any Further Desecration of the Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki, Greece Findings, Concerns and Recommendations Prepared for Asra Kadisha, Conference of Academicians for the Protection of Jewish Cemeteries and the Central Rabbinical Congress July 2008 By David Rubel Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki, Greece Findings, Concerns and Recommendations 2 BACKGROUND 1. The old Jewish cemetery of Thessaloniki is being desecrated by construction under the authority of the City of Thessaloniki and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The cemetery was once the largest Jewish cemetery in the world and is located in a city that was home to one of longest continuous Jewish communities only to be destroyed during the Nazi occupation in World War II. The Asra Kadisha (Committee for the Preservation of Gravesites), the leadership of the Jewish community of Greece, as well as other Jewish organizations dedicated to the preservation of cemeteries abroad, have all strongly protested the desecration of the Jewish cemetery as violation of their religious beliefs. All of these organizations have stated that construction is taking place inside the boundaries of the Jewish cemetery..All construction work of a new Metro station and a campus building should be halted immediately. CURRENT DESECRETION 2. Until an authoritative and unbiased map is finally produced of the Jewish cemetery of Thessaloniki, all construction in contested areas should stop immediately. An area of land with such great religious and historical significance deserves a full and exhaustive research undertaking. A professional land survey and thorough historical investigation are essential. Just from the research that we have conducted on the cemetery, it is abundantly clear that there is compelling evidence that significantly differs from the United States Consulate General Office in Thessaloniki (which is based on mapping from the Survey Office of Thessaloniki in 1936 and cannot be judged an objective party).

  • The First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians Adult Bible Study
The First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians Adult Bible Study Msgr. Charles Pope I. Introductory Notes - A. The city of Thessalonica - St. Paul arrived at Thessalonica accompanied by Silas in the course of his second apostolic journey (A.D. 49 – 52). More specifically he probably arrived in the summer of the year 50 (cf Acts 17:1). The city, situated on the Aegean Sea was a flourishing center of trade in St. Paul’s time thanks to its port and the presence of a large trade route nearby. It was one of the most important cities in Macedonia during Paul’s time. There were approximately 200,000 residents at the time of Paul’s visit. As far as religion was concerned, it was a typical pagan city. Archaeology has unearthed the remains of many statues of gods. There were also quite a number of Jews living in Thessalonica in St. Paul’s time. Paul, as was a general practice first went to the synagogue and preach Jesus as the Messiah promised in the Old Testament. We know that he preached in the synagogue there on three successive Sabbaths (acts 17: 2)and likely stayed in Thessalonica about two months lodging in the house of Jason (acts 17:6). As a result of his preaching many Jews and Gentiles came to believe. His success earned him the envy of certain Jews who organized demonstrations and attacked Jason’s house. They were looking for Paul and Silas, and, not finding them, they arrested Jason. This led to St. Paul and his companions leaving the city and are the same night.
