16Î LOCATION - Detailed description of the project The projects’ purpose is the preparation of all relevant studies and other documentation, which are required for the approval and procurement of municipal solid waste disposal facilities that will serve the municipalities of , Panagia and –Acanthus, in Eastern Halkidiki. The permanent served population is 18.861 citizens and the average annual waste production is 16.000 ton/year.

The proposed waste processing and disposal facilities of Eastern Halkidiki 4th Waste Management Section, according to the relevant Regional Waste Management Plan of is: One sanitary landfill site with an annual capacity of 16.000t/y (average of years 2010 – 2046) and a total volume of 775.000 m3 (Phase A: 450.000 m3 - Phase B: 325.000 m3 ). One waste transfer station for the solid waste of the Central and North part of Stagira –Acanthus Municipality which was not included in the contract objectives.

The specific projects’ objectives included the following: SITING STUDY Identification and Evaluation of the most appropriate areas for the location of the sanitary landfill. Three (3) alternative sites have been identified and evaluated with Environmental, Geological, Technical and Economical Criteria using a Multicriteria Decision System, supported by a GIS system.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY A detailed E.I.A. study was elaborated for the most appropriate site.

FEASIBILITY STUDY The Feasibility Study consists of a Technical Preliminary Design Study (and included Topographical Survey, Geotechnical Study, Hydraulic Study, Process design Study, Electromechanical Study) and a Cost Analysis. The landfill was designed according to the requirements of EU Directive 99/31 and consists of the following parts: • A Landfill basin with an area of 50.000 m2 and net volume 775.000 m3 • A Landfill sealing layer with geocomposite liner (0.50 m compacted clay with K≤ 1x10-9m/sec + 2.00mm geomembrane) • A Leachate collection and treatment system • A Biogas collection network and biogas high temperature flaring station 300Nm3/hr • Administrative building, garage and other infrastructure works • Mobile equipment (Truck, Compactor, Bulldozer) HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN Α Health and Safety Plan was prepared.

TENDER DOCUMENTS The tender documents were prepared according to Greek legislation, with the system called “Design – Build” which is equivalent with the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Design – Build – (Yellow Book). Type of services provided CONSULTANCY SERVICES for studies elaboration, including: • Siting Study • Environmental Impact Assessment Study • Feasibility Study which included: • Health and Safety Plan • Tender documents, with the system “Design – Build”
