Talks Health

Feedback from One Health event at Partington Healthy Living Centre

1. Introduction

As part of continuing the Trafford Talks Health conversations, Trafford CCG had stall within the ‘One Health’ marketplace, planned by Partington Family Practice. Information was available regarding pharmacies; flu; sepsis; wellbeing and lifestyle support; Healthwatch top ten tips for when you visit your doctor; Trafford Coordination Centre; opportunity to take part in Trafford Talks Health activities (x3).

2. Findings

Activity 1:

What do you feel are the main health issues for the neighbourhood you live in? How can we address them?

Issue Address by  Unemployment – leading to :  Activities to help make people feel better: free keep o feeling demotivated/undervalued/ fit sessions; film clubs for families not just kids to depression bring people together; o at home a lot so electric bills higher than  Info to help people to save energy better those working  Home based activities to keep people busy at home o may eat more as bored eg keep fit exercises at home; crafts which can be sold at community events  Targeted and fast track mental health support for unemployed close to home (not having to travel as won’t be able to afford it)  Pollution – industrial area with chemical works etc  Plotting incidences of leukaemia /asthma on map to leading to: see if there is a neighbourhood problem o Asthma “lots of people with it – especially  Review air quality children”  Think of ways to support older people (60s+) who o Leukaemia (high rates) – “has NHS have previously worked in jobs where they came into considered plotting where people live with contact with pollutants more – info and advice this?” o Lots of people over 60 with COPD (including some who haven’t smoked)

 Pylons – “very close to houses, leading to lots of As above – plot cases against addresses leukaemia/cancer cases”

 GP waiting times poor, especially if wish to see a Better appointment systems/more staff/longer opening particular GP (3-5 weeks) times  Buses vs locality  More direct bus services to hospitals o 2 buses to get to Royal Infirmary  More out-patient appointments in Partington o 2 buses to get to Wythenshawe instead o 2 hours to get to Royal on bus o Local Link service available but patients don’t want to wait two hours after their hospital appointment to be picked up again – eg 90 yr old lady paid for taxi as couldn’t face the idea of waiting so long  High number of missed GP appointments leading to  Tell patients how many missed appointments and o Wastage of appointments which could have cost to NHS been used by other patients that day  Mental health support –  Have more support locally and more staff o having to travel to Sale or for it. Patient may not go for support if have to travel far. o Continuity of care – seeing different counsellors which is difficult to build rapport and trust and may have negative impact on patient  Lots of activities for children/young people but not  More activities promoted – especially older men sure if many for older people (especially men)

Activity 2:

What do you think Trafford CCG should spend money on?

All agreed to the list outlined by the current CCG commissioning intentions.

Other suggestions for funding included:

 Healthy hips and heart sessions (especially at the Methodist church)  Public health campaigns to raise awareness  End of life night time sitting service

Activity 3: Message in a bottle

Attendees had the opportunity to complete a “Message in a bottle” form to tell Trafford CCG what they thought about the services looking after their health. Comments are listed below:

What’s good?

 Very good at Partington for blood tests  Please keep healthy hips and hearts session at the Methodist church  There are some really good doctors here

What needs improving?

 Adult counselling – can sessions be available in Partington rather than having to travel to Sale? I’ve even had to travel to Altrincham when my counsellor in Sale was off sick. I’d rather see the same counsellor, as I build trust and they know my background. I have to start all over again for each new counsellor.  There are quite a few locums here. I would like to see regular docs.  Respite services and support for parents/families of children with special needs. Lack of services is having a negative impact on my health and the rest of my family  Therapy services – need some available outside of school times (eg Seashell Swim would be great to use after school)  Support for carers of those who are dying  Need night time support/care service for those who are dying at home  Nothing I can think of

3. Other issues discussed

 Behaviour change - Attendees speaking to me who know they should make a lifestyle change, but don’t really know where to start (eg healthy eating due to recent diabetes diagnosis or stopping smoking) were provided with a copy of the new ‘Your Health’ (Wellbeing and lifestyle support in Trafford) booklet.

 Fibromyalgia/CFS – lack of support as newly diagnosed – advised patient of Salford & Trafford ME Group and will send patient further details in the post.

 Complaints procedure - Advice provided regarding how to complain about NHS services

 Increasing cervical screening uptake in Partington – Discussion with GP around learning from good work undertaken in Old Trafford with Voice of BME and developing community champions.

 Phlebotomy – Concern that if appointments for blood tests were introduced, there may be lots of missed appointments (similar to missed GP appointments)

4. Next steps

 The findings outlined in this report will feed into the Trafford Talks Health work being undertaken which will help inform Trafford CCG’s commissioning intentions for 2018/19 and will be made available in a larger Trafford Talks Health report in the near future.

 The report will be shared with Partington Family Practice and Trafford Partnerships team so that they are aware of issues raised.

 Trafford CCG has expressed interest in being involved in any future events.
