Décès de Robert Opron, le père des Citroën SM, GS et CX Alors que Citroën s'apprête à retrouver une grande berline dans sa gamme, la marque aux chevrons pleure aujourd'hui l'un de ses designers les plus marquants. Robert Opron, créateur des SM, GS et autres CX, est décédé à l'âge de 89 ans. Il aura aussi apposé sa patte sur les Renault 25 ou Fuego Après avoir fêté son cinquantième anniversaire l’an dernier, la Citroën SM est aujourd’hui orpheline. Son designer, le Français Robert Opron, s’est éteint le 29 mars à l’âge de 89 ans. Le prestigieux coupé de la marque aux chevrons, avec son style avant-gardiste, reste l’une des créations les plus marquantes de ce natif d’Amiens. Mais d’autres modèles issus de son coup de crayon demeurent aujourd’hui dans les mémoires. Y compris chez Renault, constructeur qu’il rejoindra en 1975 et qui lui laissera pourtant beaucoup moins de liberté de création. Des débuts remarqués chez Simca. Dès le début, le parcours de Robert Opron, né le 22 février 1932, se place sous le signe de l’audace. En 1958, il rejoint d’abord Simca et y signe le concept Fulgur à l’âge de seulement 26 ans. Une étude commanditée par le journal Tintin et qui veut incarner rien moins que « la voiture de l’an 2000 ». Il n’y aura évidemment pas de commercialisation, mais une maquette sera exposée au Salon de Genève de 1959... peu avant la dissolution du bureau de design Simca. Après son licenciement, puis un bref intermède dans l'électroménager, Robert Opron prend véritablement son envol chez Citroën. Il commence par y La première création de ce natif d'Amiens est ce concept dessiner la version break de l’Ami Simca Fulgur, censé incarner la « voiture de l'an 2000 ».. 6, qui gomme la poupe controversée alors que nous n'étions qu'en 1959. de la berline et connaîtra une vraie réussite commerciale. 1970, année faste avec les GS et SM D’abord placé sous les ordres de Flaminio Bertoni, il prend la succession de l’Italien en 1964, après son décès des suites d'une hépatite foudroyante. C'est ainsi Opron qui se chargera de restyler le chef-d'œuvre de son prédécesseur, la DS, en lui greffant des phares carénés directionnels en 1967. Mais c'est 1970 qui sera l’année la plus faste pour lui, avec la naissance de deux modèles qui marqueront leur temps pour des raisons différentes : la très populaire GS d’un côté et la luxueuse SM de l’autre. Son passage chez Citroën s’achève avec le dernier haut de gamme à succès de la marque, la CX, en 1974. Avec toujours une poupe en forme de bulle, le gimmick fétiche de Robert Opron. Un passage chez Renault en demi-teinte… Après le rachat des Chevrons par Peugeot, le designer préfère se tourner vers Renault, qu’il rejoint en janvier 1975. Hélas, il ne pourra laisser son imagination s’exprimer autant qu’il l’espérait. La faute, notamment, à un département marketing qui a trop souvent le dernier mot. La Renault 9 sera donc loin de proposer l’originalité qu’il aurait souhaité lui insuffler. Mais il aura le droit de se lâcher un peu plus avec le coupé Fuego et apposera également sa patte, ou plutôt sa bulle, sur la R25. Comme la CX, il s’agit d’ailleurs du dernier vrai succès commercial du constructeur chez les routières Et une aventure Fiat vite terminée Malheureusement, l’arrivée de Georges Besse à la tête du Losange et le départ simultané de Bernard Hanon, qui l’avait fait venir chez Renault, vont le pousser vers la sortie. Robert Opron entre alors chez Fiat, où on lui doit notamment les dessins préparatoires des baroques Alfa Romeo RZ et SZ. Mais l’aventure tourne de nouveau court assez vite. De retour en France dès 1990, le designer termine sa carrière comme consultant, notamment pour Ligier. L’une des voitures sans permis les plus atypiques, la Be Up, avait ainsi été annoncée par le concept Dragon Fly, qui portait sa marque. Décidément, jusqu’au bout, Robert Opron aura cultivé le goût de la différence. ________ § § § ________ .

The origins of the car go all the way back to 1938, when Citroën Chairman and CEO Pierre Boulanger was thinking about the successor to the Traction Avant. He was convinced that the new car above all had to be comfortable. And so a new project was launched, with the code name VGD, short for «Voiture de Grande Diffusion», or «mass-produced car». He entrusted the project to André Lefèbvre, an aeronautics engineer by training. Alongside these two men, the Citroën team also featured other talented individuals, notably Flaminio Bertoni (sculpture) and Paul Mages (suspension). But with the advent of war, and the ensuing occupation and wartime restrictions, the VGD project was put on hold. The project gradually got back on track after the end of the war. In 1952 L’Auto-Journal published a scoop, in the form of a drawing of the future Citroën and its technical characteristics. Citroën did its utmost to hush up the affair by taking the magazine to court. The brand wanted to keep the project a secret at all costs. 4 In October 1955, a bombshell hit the 42nd Paris Motor Show. A car took centre stage on the Citroën stand: the DS 19. A flying saucer, with bright colours and a magic word, «oleo-pneumatic», a system that appeared to do everything in the driver’s place.     Cars of Robert Opron Robert Opron was a designer with primarily an artistic background, though he had sound understanding of the principles of aerodynamics and featured them prominently in his work throughout his career. After cutting his teeth on the Simca concept car, known as the Fulgar in 1958, he was hand-picked by Flaminio Bertoni, to succeed him as the head of design at Citroen. His first job there was the redesign or phase two of the DS. Opron realized that car would benefit from improved aerodynamics so he enclosed and smoothed the headlamps. He also developed swiveling, directional headlights, along with a new shark like nose in 1967. Next Opron did the styling for Citroën’s first midsize car, The GS met with instant market acceptance and was the largest selling Citroën model for many years. Next he created the SM in 1970, which is often referred to as his signature work, it was an ultra-luxury sports car featuring a Maserati V6 engine. In 1974, Opron created a new flagship model using some of the fundamental featured of both the DS and GS, but with a much more modern, sleek, aerodynamic body. The new car was designated the CX, and began a production run that would last an impressive seventeen years. That same year, Citroen went bankrupt, and were taken over by Peugeot. Peugeot chose to dismiss Robert Opron, probably something they would go on to regret, as rival Renault quickly hired him. Opron’s first job was a redesign, in this case the Alpine A310. He attempted to retain the classic features of the Alpine, while improving it general appearance.

  • ALPINE HISTORY Alpine Was a French
    ALPINE HISTORY Alpine was a French manufacturer of racing and sports cars which used rear mounted Renault engines. Jean Redele, the founder of Alpine, was originally a Dieppe garage proprietor who began to achieve considerable competition success in one of the few French cars produced just after World War 2. The proper pronunciation is closer to "al-peen". Using Renault 4CVs, he gained class wins in a number of major events, including the Mille Miglia and Coupe des Alpes. As his experience with the little 4CV built up, he incorporated many modifications, including for example, special 5 speed gear boxes replacing the original 3 speed unit. To provide a lighter car he built a number of special versions with lightweight aluminium bodies: he drove in these at Le Mans and Sebring with some success in the early 50s. Encouraged by the development of these cars and consequent customer demand, he founded the Societe Anonyme des Automobiles Alpine in 1954. The firm was named Alpine after his Coupe des Alpes successes but in those days, La Manche was very wide! Alpine did not realise that over in England the previous year, Sunbeam had introduced a sports coupe derived from the Sunbeam Talbot and called the Sunbeam Alpine. This naming problem was to cause problems for Alpine throughout its history! In 1955, he worked with the Chappe brothers to be amongst the pioneers of auto glass fibre construction and produced a small coupe, based on 4CV mechanicals and called the A106. It used the platform chassis of the original Renault 4CV. The A106 achieved a number of successes through the 1950s and was joined by a low and stylish cabriolet.
