HOA Association Meeting Minutes for November 5th, 2019

The pledge of allegiance was given, and the singing of God Bless America was sung by everyone. A moment of silence for past residents was honored by Bonnie Quackenbush. The meeting was then called to order by President Sandy Leach.

The Secretary's report for the month of October was accepted as read.

The Treasurer's report for the month of October was accepted as read, as was the year-end report to date. Treasurer Mike Stone gave us a detailed report on the membership figures, expenses, and income for the past year. There was a comment made that the hard work and time spent on the books this year was remarkable...thanks to Mike Stone.

The HOA is thankful to the 408 members this year that have supported us, and to the Area Directors that worked tirelessly to get those numbers, along with our new resident contact, Sue LaCheusse.

Rich Allen, By-Laws Chairman, thanked his committee that helped him make the needed changes and additions to the by-laws, and he also read the changes and additions.

Tom Mullen, Nominating Committee Chairman, thanked his committee for helping to get all the people to run as candidates for the HOA, which came to an amazing count of 11 people volunteering for positions... the most we have had in a very long time. He then introduced the candidates, which were then given a few minutes to express how they could help the HOA stay viable. Charles Pennington explained in detail the sale of the old firehouse, and how it will be used. Linda Lee Krebs gave us information on Life Line Screening, the Arts and Kraft show that's upcoming, and the New York Club Thanksgiving Dinner, where proceeds go to Operation Shoebox. Gail Morrison, election supervisor gave us a detailed report on how the voting is to be done, and how the elections will work.

The Share the Wealth was held. There were 7 $10 winners. The meeting was then adjourned at 8:15PM. Respectfully submitted, Bob Senge, Acting Secretary

New England Club Thanksgiving Dinner

On Thursday, November 14, 2019, the New England Club held its annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Turkeys were purchased by the club and cooked to perfection by club members. They were delicious, as were all of the side dishes provided by club mem- bers. A short business meeting followed dinner. Linda Lee led a spirited game of the “Price is Right.” After the game, the food items were donated to the food pantry.

On January 9th, the New England Club dinner will be catered by Arianna’s. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for guests. For more information, see the flyer in this newsletter.

I enjoyed this quick read (only 293 pages) mystery-thriller. I loved-the author’s descriptive writing of the physical local scenes, familiar to me set on the New England coast. “They walk along the beach in the fog. Mattie, in a Red Sox jacket, runs ahead to look for crabs. The beach is flat and shallow, curved like a shell, the sand the color of weathered wood with a calligraphy of seaweed written along its crust.” Her painting with words of wonderful scenes continues later in London and Ireland. She conveyed the host of emotions felt – especially the turmoil of grief from losing a loved one. One of my favorite characters, Mattie, the 15-year-old daughter had one of the best lines “but how do you ever know that you know a person?” I liked that I was forced to think about this question and many others. When it sometimes seemed the reader figured out things quicker than Kathryn did, the use of flashbacks supplied insight into the mindset of a wife left alone. Kathryn rationalizes a “marriage was like radio reception. It comes and goes.”

Set in the 1990’s, an unfamiliarity with the political headlines of the day could leave some confused. This is just one example of our book club discussions filling in the pieces. Thanks to our group member who knew real life pilots and recounted their secret lives. This book has been made into a movie (unabashed plug…. Look for our mid-month movie matinee coming soon to a com- munity center near you!!) We will get to see how the screen- writers end this story. Anita Shreve left it open ended for us to decide.
