FIRST WORD February shropshire.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2017 15:59 Page 1 First Word Darwin’s legacy explored in Magnum Photos’ new Shrewsbury exhibition Shrewsbury’s most famous son, the 19th century natu- ralist and geologist Charles Darwin, is the inspiration behind a special exhibition being presented on the streets of the Shropshire town this month. Evolution Explored has been curated by world-famous photography agency Magnum Photos, an international co-operative owned by its photographer members. Magnum has approximately one million photographs in both print and transparency in a physical library, with more than 500,000 images available online. Commenting on Evolution Explored, the agency’s Emily Graham said: “We’re delighted to be collaborat- ing on this outdoor exhibition, looking at Magnum's archive through the prism of evolution. As Magnum moves into its 70th year, the exhibition will display powerful historic and contemporary photographs exploring Darwin's legacy in modern society.” The new exhibition is launched on 9 February to coin- cide with Darwin Day, and will be available to view at St Mary’s Church and in The Square until 23 April. We watch them compulsively, discuss them, love some of them, hate others. More and more frequently, they are becoming the subject of theoretical analysis, mainly due to the ever-changing form, poetics or the issues dealt with. The purpose of this modest paper is to analyse the possible ways of aesthetization of the fictional universe in the popular TV series Hannibal (NBC 2013-2015). My goal is to answer not only the question of which of the aesthetization models, i.e. the theatralization of life or the aesthetics of everyday life is better suited for the conceptualization of Hannibal, but also to determine the conceptual relationships between these two aesthetic phenomena. The essay has the following structure. In §1, I will analyse and clarify the definition of the concept of a performance. Then, in §2, I will describe the concept of theatrical work, in particular, I will analyse its constitutive properties. In §3, I will characterise the phenomena of aesthetization of life through its theatralization and I will indicate the links which exist be- tween aesthetic properties and dramatic properties. At the end of the text, in §4, I will explore the possibility of treating the theatralization of life as a form of everyday aesthetics using story- lines taken from Hannibal.

LAURENCE DOBIESZ (1995-7) is in the West End in the RSC's wonderful TWELFTH NIGHT. KATE PRINCE (2001) is about to open her production of THE BOYS IN THE HOOD at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. SIMON THOMAS (1994-200) has just landed the plum role as TARZAN in Disney's new film while BEN BARNES (1997-2004) has just completed his second stint as PRINCE CASPIAN, also for Disney and is currently filming in Ireland. JUDE LAW (1987 -90) continues to work as hard as anyone with his HAMLET just having wowed New York, a new HENRY V coming up in London, a major role in THE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and the new face on the Dior Homme Sport commercial campaign. JAMES STURGESS (1993-5) has had a busy year filming THE WAY BACK with director Peter Wier, HEARTLESS directed by Philip Ridley and enjoying his success in 50 DEAD MEN WALKING. EDDIE REDMAYNE (1998) is never off the cinema screen with GLORIOUS 39 currently opening and BLACK DEATH in the pipeline.On stage he is in the new production of RED at The Donmar Warehouse.

Founded in 1933, it is a registered charity governed by Royal Charter. The BFI now combines a cultural, creative and industrial role.
