Anita And Me to debut in the Midlands A stage adaptation of Meera Syal’s award-winning semi-autobiographical novel Anita And Me is to make its debut at Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre next year. Syal’s story focuses on the experiences of nine-year-old Meena as she grows up in the only Punjabi family in a Black Country mining village. The novel is being developed for the stage by Tanika Gupta, and the show will be directed by The Rep’s artistic director Roxanna Silbert. Commenting on the adaptation, Wolverhampton-born Meera said: “I’m so thrilled that Anita And Me is being developed and premiered at the Birmingham Rep - in the West Midlands where I grew up, where the novel is set, and whose people and stories had such a huge influ- ence on my childhood. THE STRONGHOLD Directed by Cédric Jimenez INTERNATIONAL MARKETING INTERNATIONAL PUBLICITY Alba OHRESSER Margaux AUDOUIN [email protected] [email protected] 1 SYNOPSIS Marseille’s north suburbs hold the record of France’s highest crime rate. Greg, Yass and Antoine’s police brigade faces strong pressure from their bosses to improve their arrest and drug seizure stats. In this high-risk environment, where the law of the jungle reigns, it can often be hard to say who’s the hunter and who’s the prey. When assigned a high-profile operation, the team engages in a mission where moral and professional boundaries are pushed to their breaking point. 2 INTERVIEW WITH CEDRIC JIMENEZ What inspired you to make this film? In 2012, the scandal of the BAC [Anti-Crime Brigade] Nord affair broke out all over the press. It was difficult to escape it, especially for me being from Marseille. I Quickly became interested in it, especially since I know the northern neighbourhoods well having grown up there. There was such a media show that I felt the need to know what had happened. How far had these cops taken the law into their own hands? But for that, it was necessary to have access to the police and to the files. That was obviously impossible. When we decided to work together, me and Hugo [Sélignac], my producer, I always had this affair in mind. It was then that he said to me, “Wait, I know someone in Marseille who could introduce us to the real cops involved.” And that’s what happened.

  • 20TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITIONS SHOWCASE Launching Special Editions by Cornelia Parker & John Stezaker 2
20TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITIONS SHOWCASE Launching special editions by Cornelia Parker & John Stezaker 2 – 10 November 2018 To mark and celebrate twenty years of Ingrid Swenson’s tenure as director of PEER and her recent MBE Award for Services to the Arts in East London, artists Cornelia Parker and John Stezaker have very generously produced prints in limited editions of 50 each to support PEER’s programme, which will be launched to the public on 2 November. We are using this as an opportunity to highlight some of PEER’s achievements over the past two decades with a display of previous artists’ editions and publications from Mike Nelson, Fiona Banner, Anthony McCall, Kathy Prendergast, John Smith, Bridget Smith and many others. November marks twenty years to the month since Ingrid began working at PEER, which was then known as The Pier Trust. Over this period, Ingrid has developed a curatorial strategy that acknowledges how art can and should have a meaningful and powerful place in the lives of people across the whole spectrum of our diverse society. Ingrid’s work has been far-reaching nationally and internationally, but always rooted in an embrace of the community. Over these two decades, it has been a great privilege for PEER to have been able to work with more than 150 emerging, mid- career and established artists; ranging from the one-off event to more ambitious and complex commissions. To set us on our way towards the next twenty years, we are delighted that both Cornelia Parker and John Stezaker have so generously agreed to make limited edition prints to be sold to support our artistic and local programmes.

  • Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation
Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation Colin Barnes 1991 A version of this paper entitled 'Disabling Comedy' appeared in Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People's Journal 'Coalition' December 1991 pp. 26 - 28 Over the last couple of years disabled people and their organizations have become increasingly concerned about disabling imagery in the media. One of the most important examples being the cynical exploitation of disabled people by charities in their efforts to raise money. Here I would like to highlight another form of disablism common to the media which disabled people are expected to endure, which is equally disabling and which is often overlooked or ignored: the exploitation of disabled people by professional non-disabled comedians on television. Of course laughing at disability is not new, disabled people have been a source of amusement and ridicule for non-disabled people throughout history. Along with the other so-called timeless universals of 'popular' humour such as foreigners, women and the clergy, Elizabethan joke books are full of jokes about people with every type of impairment imaginable. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries keeping 'idiots' as objects of humour was common among those who had the money to do so, and visits to Bedlam and other 'mental' institutions were a typical form of entertainment for the able but ignorant. While such thoughtless behaviour might be expected in earlier less enlightened times, making fun of disabled people is as prevalent now as it was then. It is especially common among professional non-disabled comedians. Indeed, several of the comedy 'greats' who influenced today's 'funny' men and women built their careers around disablist humour.
