Taking back the night Swampy the Friendly Black Swamp Creature Bob Dinsdale Why in the world would women march around campus in the dark? This event has been taking place Lf\TE annually, because it isn't "safe" for women to walk EARLY alone at night. Because they supposedly need to be , DANCE , DANCE. protected from the bad elements "out there." This common perception restricts their freedom. It inhibits free movement. It promotes fear and depen- dency. So women are taking a stand and saying that this is unacceptable. Women should be able to travel without fear. Why should they change their behavior because someone else may choose to hurt them? Is that the i woman's responsibility — to not go anywhere because there is a chance that someone may decide to harm them? What about the attacker's responsibility? ♦ That is what this event is about - raising awareness, not just a bunch of women being angry, although they certainly should be.Women have a great opportunity to let people know that they are sick of constantly being afraid for their well-being. The Take Back the Night march is symbolic of the low tolerance for this fear. Violence against women is everyone's problem — it is allowed to continue by society, and affects many members, not just women. So, locally, our focus on campus safety shouldn't just mean more lights and walking in groups. How about less of a need for those? Make it known that you find violence unacceptable. Pass it along. COLUMBUS -- Thirty-eight percent of Ohio's high school seniors passed all five parts of the 12th-grade proficiency tests this year, state education offi- cials said. That is up from the 34 percent of last year's graduating class that would have met this year's higher standards on all five test areas: reading, writing, mathe- matics, citizenship and science. The State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Edu- cation jointly announced the 1998 testing results on Tuesday. Seniors who pass Ohio's ninth- grade proficiency test ~ which state law requires for high school graduation — by Jan. 1 must take the 12th-grade test in February. Passing the 12th-grade test is not a graduation requirement but, beginning with this year's class, scores on both the ninth- grade and 12th-grade tests are included in students' school tran- scripts. "Clearly we are making prog- ress in raising achievement levels," John Goff, state superin- tendent of public instruction, said in a prepared statement.
