Alla dolce memoria di mio padre, e di mia nonna, e ai miei cari, mamma, Fabbri ed Andrew. vi Abstract This project analyzes Dante’s influence on the poetry of Thomas Stearns Eliot, Eugenio Montale, and Seamus Heaney. A comparative reading of the poetry and criticism of the four authors will display that Dante’s presence in these three modern poets’ works is of significant import, as through stylistic and thematic Dantean references, Eliot, Montale, and Heaney shape the meaning of their texts and evolve a new poetic craft. Moreover, detecting the numerous references to Dante’s work in their verses can shed light on the poetic message they want to transmit. An essential part of this project will be to establish interconnections between the works of the modern poets as well, as their decision to draw on Dante’s poetry is a major link between them and creates an affinity in their verses. This study will be divided into three sections. The first section will explore Dante’s world: his life and works, and the social, political and intellectual atmosphere he lived in. The second section deals with the stylistic influence that Dante had on Eliot, Montale and Heaney; while the third section concerns the cultural and thematic influence. The medieval master’s experiments with linguistic techniques mirror the poets’ preoccupation with language, and influence their poetic style. Eliot drew on the hellish dialectic and imagery found in Dante’s Inferno to display the lack of hope of modern civilization after the First World War. Montale’s use of the Dantean allegory, displays his tendency to describe the spiritual through the physical, and images of aridity and ruins become emblems of the human condition and of the lack of religious beliefs. Finally, Heaney is attracted to Dante’s vii plurilinguistic style, which allows him to transcend a mono-cultural way of making poetry, and to open to the confrontation with other traditions. The cultural influence is explored through the device of the journey towards salvation, which is the means by which artistic, social and religious issues are addressed. Common cultural experiences and affinities with Dante induce the modern authors to draw on his works. His Christian and Classical backgrounds are important features that they share with him. In addition, Dante lived in times of war and revolutions. His anxiety with the social strife in Medieval Tuscany mirrors Heaney’s concerns about the Troubles, and Eliot’s and Montale’s preoccupation with the aftermaths of World War I. However, through Dante they are able to transcend their cultural givens, as in him, they find a universal mode of making poetry that is in tune with the world they seek to attain in their lyrics. Larson Graduate program in Spanish and Portuguese ABSTRACT This dissertation proposes a new approach to the poetics of the late Spanish poet José Ángel Valente (1929-2000), a member of the “Generation of the 50’s”. Its purpose is to evaluate mystical influences as a projection of an ontological state, a necessity of being to explore its own immanence. The historical context is the divide between modernity and postmodernity in a movement toward an ideal notion of premodernity. Valente develops an immanent and transcendent inner voyage which is not just a reaction against the age of mechanical or technological reproduction, but a way of establishing a new epistemological analysis in order to examine more effectively the traditional notion of “reality”. His is an antirationalist thought that seeks to fill in the gaps in the traditional rationalistic and positivistic modes of analysis. Thus, his attitude is the same as the one practiced by mystics of all eras, who have always tried to avoid established ways of thought, whether religious, social or linguistic. All of Valente’s essays, critical works and books of poetry are permeated by mystical intertextualities and by the literary and philosophical commentaries of three mystical traditions which have been deeply rooted in Spain: the Jewish Cabala (Abraham Abulafia, Moses de León, Moses Cordovero…), Muslim Sufism (Ibn ‘Arabī, the Avicena brothers…), and the Christian Catholics (San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Teresa de Jesús, ii Miguel de Molinos…).

Ha estudiado letras hispinicas en las Universidades de Heidelberg y de Santander. Se doctor6 en la de Columbia, Nueva York. Con posterioridad, ha sido profesora en la Univer- sidad de Puerto Rico. Fascinada por la narrativa de Horacio Quiroga, se ha especializado en la vida y obra del gran cuentista uruguayo. No s6lo investig6 su producci6n lite- raria, sino que tambi6n visit6 la regi6n de las Misiones argentinas, sus hombres y sus animales, para lograr el mas cabal conocimiento de su expresi6n artistica. El libro puede dividirse en tres partes: primero, la autora narra la vida de Quiroga; segundo, comenta y analiza su obra literaria; y, tercero, da una bibliografia extensa. La profesora Reck relata c6mo la vida de Horacio Quiroga fue marcada por muertes violentas -Ila de su padre, la de su padrastro, la de un amigo, la de su primera esposa, y, finalmente, la suya propia.     Dante’s Inferno: Critical Reception and Influence David Lummus Dante and the Divine Comedy have had a profound influence on the production of literature and the practice of literary criticism across the Western world since the moment the Comedy was first read. Al- though critics and commentators normally address the work as a whole, the first canticle, Inferno, is the part that has met with the most fervent critical response. The modern epoch has found in it both a mirror with which it might examine the many vices and perversions that define it and an obscure tapestry of almost fundamentalist pun- ishments that are entirely alien to it. From Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Osip Mandelstam in the early twentieth century to Seamus Heaney, W. S. Merwin, and Robert Pinsky at century’s end, modern poets of every bent have been drawn to the Inferno and to the other two canti- cles of the Comedy as an example of poetry’s world-creating power and of a single poet’s transcendence of his own spiritual, existential, and political exile.1 To them Dante was and is an example of how a poet can engage with the world and reform it, not just represent it, through the power of the poetic imagination. In order to understand how Dante and his poem have been received by critics and poets in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we must glance—however curso- rily—at the seven-hundred-year critical tradition that has formed the hallowed academic institution of Dante studies. In this way, we can come to see the networks of understanding that bind Dante criticism across its history.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis sets out to explore the significant impact that poetry, fiction and essays published in the Sixties had on the development of Eugenio Montale’s later poetry. The primary focus is Satura (1971) but space is also accorded to Montale’s ensuing four collections,Diario del ’71 e del ’72 (1973), Quaderno di quattro anni (1977), Altri versi (1980) and Diario postumo (1996). The first part of this study delves into the role played by contemporary literature in that ‘svolta’ that took place with the composition of the ‘Xenia’ {Satura). Amongst those texts mentioned are an Italian translation of verse by William Carlos Williams and Natalia Ginzburg’s Lessico famigliare. The second part of this thesis deals with those works that helped effect the grand shift from the poetic mode of the ‘Xenia’ to that of ‘Satura T and ‘Satura IT (the final two sections ofSatura).

    altrelettere Carmela Pesca The Narrative Function of Clothing in Elena Ferrante’s Troubling Love Abstract Elena Ferrante’s first published novel Troubling Love deals with the dark side of the mother- daughter relation as no other of her works. The narration takes the form of a painful assembly of events, dealing with both rupture and continuity between the narrator Delia and the story’s protagonist, her mother Amalia. Essentially, Delia sews images together as they emerge from her visceral, rather than intellective or even imaginative revisiting of her childhood and adolescence. Amalia’s drowned body is progressively dressed by Delia’s pieces of memory, equivalent to clothing items that shape the narrative’s fabric. Part of the communication among different characters happens through exchange of clothes, fabric and lingerie, corresponding to their attempts to tailor Amalia’s narrative in the name of their troubled love, which comes in different patterns. Delia’s recollections of episodes of domestic violence, however, convey laceration and amorphousness, as she continuously stitches and makes adjustments, whereas no clothes or narratives can contain the true Amalia. This essay intends to highlight the path along which the narration’s thread runs. It explores the correspondences between the text’s form and content, and analyzes the narrator’s struggle to come to terms with a character whose very substance remains unreachable, encrypted in her old garments that have resisted violence, manipulation, and imposition of forms. Dressing the narrative body If each of Elena Ferrante’s published works deals with the dark side of the mother-daughter relationship while raising intentionally uncomfortable questions, her first novel Troubling Love revolves around such an intricate subject more than any other writings, by digging into muddy materials, from which uneasy matter emerges.
