Classical Persian Literature Bahman Solati (Ph.D), 2015 University of California, Berkeley [email protected] Introduction Studying the roots of a particular literary history enables us to better understand the allusions the literature transmits and why we appreciate them. It also allows us to foresee how the literature may progress.1 I will try to keep this attitude in the reader’s mind in offering this brief summary of medieval Persian literature, a formidable task considering the variety and wealth of the texts and documentation on the subject.2 In this study we will pay special attention to the development of the Persian literature over the last millennia, focusing in particular on the initial development and background of various literary genres in Persian. Although the concept of literary genres is rather subjective and unstable,3 reviewing them is nonetheless a useful approach for a synopsis, facilitating greater understanding, deeper argumentation, and further speculation than would a simple listing of dates, titles, and basic biographical facts of the giants of Persian literature. Also key to literary examination is diachronicity, or the outlining of literary development through successive generations and periods. Thriving Persian literature, undoubtedly shaped by historic events, lends itself to this approach: one can observe vast differences between the Persian literature of the tenth century and that of the eleventh or the twelfth, and so on.4 The fourteenth century stands as a bridge between the previous and the later periods, the Mongol and Timurid, followed by the Ṣafavids in Persia and the Mughals in India. Given the importance of local courts and their support of poets and writers, it is quite understandable that literature would be significantly influenced by schools of thought in different provinces of the Persian world.5 In this essay, I use the word literature to refer to the written word adeptly and artistically created. -

Focusing mainly on short stories, novellas and novels, the paper seeks to discuss five points. These are: main elements of a short story/novella/novel, specifications of a short story/novella/novel-based course, points for instructors to consider whilst dealing with a short story/novella/novel within EFL contexts, recommended approaches which instructors may employ in the EFL classroom whilst discussing a short story/novella/novel, and language assessment of EFL learners using a short story/novella/novel-based course. Having discussed the aforementioned points, the current paper proceeds to present a number of recommendations for EFL teaching practitioners to consider. Introduction In an increasingly demanding and competitive world, students need to embrace the four Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Best practices in the twenty-first century education, therefore, require practical tools that facilitate student engagement, develop life skills, and build upon a solid foundation of research whilst supporting higher-level thinking. Biography Etheridge Knight was a man of mystery. According to Sanford Pinsker, “Knight is the kind of poet who gives poetry a good name.”1 Fran Quinn, a close friend of Knight’s said that Knight is “the kind of person that a lot of rumors are going to gather around.”2 One thing that is certain is the he managed to produce a body of work that is to this day considered some of the finest of American poetry. Etheridge Knight was born on April 19, 1931, in Corinth, Mississippi. He grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. Knight only attended school until he had finished the eight grade. It was during this period that his problems with drug and alcohol use began, although this was also when he was introduced to the art of toasting. Toasts are traditional oral forms of narratives, often focusing on “drugs, sex, illegal activities, and violence.” After he dropped out, he ended up joining the army in 1947. Knight saw active duty in Korea and served until he was discharged in 1951 after suffering a shrapnel wound.3 In 1960 he was arrested for what was officially called armed robbery.4 Knight had distracted a clerk at a convenience store and taken $12 out of the register. When the police picked him up a few blocks away, he was found to have a knife in his pocket. The whole incident had been caught on the store’s security camera, and despite never having drawn the weapon, Knight was convicted of armed robbery and made into an example by the judge; who sentenced him to one year in prison for each dollar taken. -

The Art of Hybridization-James Welch's Fools Crow Hans Bak University of Nijmegen Recent Native American fiction has yielded a particularly hybrid mode of realism, one fluid and flexible enough to accommodate elements from tribal lore and, in varying modes and degrees, an awareness of the epis- temological dilemmas of postmodernism. The injection of tribal ele- ments-shamanism, spirits, witchcraft, charms, love medicines-together with the use of a non-Western (cyclical rather than linear) concept of time, for example, help to account for the vaunted "magical" realism in the work of Louise Erdrich (Love Medicine and Tracks) or the radically subversive and unambiguously postmodernist revision of American history and Western myth in Gerald Vizenor's The Heirs of Columbus. As critics have recurrently suggested, Native American fiction which seeks to connect itself to the oral tradition of tribal narrative (as Vizenor in his use of trickster myths and the "stories in the blood") more natu- rally accommodates itself to a postmodernist approach to fiction than to a traditional realistic one.1 The oral tradition, then, might be seen as by nature antithetical to realism. As Paula Gunn Allen has also noted, for the contemporary Native writer loyalty to the oral tradition has been "a major force in Indian resistance" to the dominant culture. Allusion A brief, often implicit and indirect reference within a literary text to something outside the text, whether another text (e.g. the Bible, a myth, another literary work, a painting, or a piece of music) or any imaginary or historical person, place, or thing. Ambiguity When we are involved in interpretation—figuring out what different elements in a story “mean”—we are responding to a work’s ambiguity. This means that the work is open to several simultaneous interpretations. Language, especially when manipulated artistically, can communicate more than one meaning, encouraging our interpretations. Antagonist A character or a nonhuman force that opposes, or is in conflict with, the protagonist. Anticlimax An event or series of events usually at the end of a narrative that contrast with the tension building up before. Antihero A protagonist who is in one way or another the very opposite of a traditional hero. Instead of being courageous and determined, for instance, an antihero might be timid, hypersensitive, and indecisive to the point of paralysis. Antiheroes are especially common in modern literary works. Archetype A character, ritual, symbol, or plot pattern that recurs in the myth and literature of many cultures; examples include the scapegoat or trickster (character type), the rite of passage (ritual), and the quest or descent into the underworld (plot pattern). -

He also will be a featured speaker at the Library of Congress National Book Festival in the Poetry pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 29, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Simic succeeds Donald Hall as Poet Laureate and joins a long line of distinguished poets who have served in the position, including most recently Ted Kooser, Louise Glück, Billy Collins, Stanley Kunitz, Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass and Rita Dove. -

Was it ethical to create poetry when a country or people were in turmoil? Was it ‘right on’ to ‘write on’? He particularly highlighted the differences between the sedentary w-r-i-t-e-r-s and the pro-active r-i-g-h-t-e-r-s, the former whose job it is to reflect and the latter whose role it is to take action.
