King & 36-39 Introduction Isaiah is quoted 411 times in the New Testament. The book prophesizes in stunning detail a broad range of the ministry of Jesus Christ 700 years before Jesus was born. Date 740 – 680 BC. Judah (Southern Kingdom) was about to follow the same example of disobedience as the Northern Kingdom, who were taken captive by the Assyrians in 722 BC. The book has two overall parts: Chapters 1-39 Judgment Chapters 40-66 Comfort, including the My Servant passages

The Threat of War against Judah, Is 7-9 Situation: Two kings, , king of , and , king of Israel, are seeking to attack Judah, and create a coalition to go against Isaiah instructs to Trust the Lord, but Ahaz chooses not to trust God, but rather to go to Assyria for help, , This put Judah under obligation to Assyria. Summary of Events (Dr Heater notes) 1. Sennacherib began his westward campaign to put down rebellion. Is 36:1; 2 Kings 18:13; 2 Chron 32:1 2. Hezekiah prepared for the battle, 2 Chron 32:2-8 3. With the fall of Lachish, Hezekiah sent messengers to placate Sennacherib and to offer him tribute, 2 Kings 18:14-22. 4. Sennacherib took the tribute, but still sent the Rabshakeh to threaten Jerusalem. Hezekiah prayed and God promised deliverance through a rumor, 2 Kings 19:1-9; Is 37:1-9. 5. Sennacherib withdrew because of the rumor about Egypt, but sent intimidating letters to Hezekiah, 2 Kings 19:10-13; Is 37:10-13. 6. Hezekiah prays to the Lord about the letters, 2 Kings 19:14; Is 37:14; 2 Chron 32:20. 7. God promises deliverance and 185,000 Assyrians died, 2 Kings 19:35-37; Is 37:36-38, 2 Chron 32:21-23.
