THE GRATEFUL DEAD

So, The Grateful Dead…never could a band be more fitting to play Woodstock. Heavily influenced by Psychedelia, , Soul, Folk and of course Rock n Roll! However, The Grateful Dead’s set was sadly cut short due to heavy rain which flooded the stage. Band members were actually getting electric shocks when they played their instruments or tried to sing in the microphone. They managed 95 minutes on stage and ended with “Turn On Your Lovelight’ (or should that have been turn OFF your light!). Regardless of all this, The Grateful Dead are still regarded as one of the best live bands of all time.

WE’RE WITH ‘THE BAND’

Best known for their Folk Rock sound, The Band played Woodstock on the Sunday around 10pm. They had only one album under their belt at the time (even though they had been around for many years) but ‘Music from the Big Pink’ had already achieved cult status and so they played 7 songs from the album and for the encore, ‘Weight’ which was the track made famous by the classic movie Easy Rider. The Band are also linked with having toured with him before and after Woodstock. Since then their career saw them inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and in 2004 Ranked them No 50 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of all Time. In 2008 they also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
