You will investigate the extent to which the contemporary sexual revolution brought about greater gender equality for female popular musicians such as Janis Joplin, and consider whether it might be more accurate to view this as a superficial revolution which masked the reality of continued sexual conservatism. You do not need to play an instrument, to sing, to read music or have any prior musical knowledge to be able to complete this course. Learn more about these OpenLearn courses here. 4 of 30 Wednesday 24 March 2021 Learning Outcomes After studying this course, you should be able to: ● understand the notion of the academic study of popular music (sometimes referred to as Popular Music Studies) ● consider the extent to which the sexual revolution brought about greater equality of opportunities for female popular musicians, such as Janis Joplin ● situate the position of female American popular musicians, such as Janis Joplin, during the 1960s within the wider context of other social ‘revolutions’ taking place at the same time in the United States, including the Civil Rights Movement, the sexual revolution, and development of the counterculture ● develop your skills in close listening to music. 1 The academic study of popular music 1 The academic study of popular music The academic study of popular music (Popular Music Studies) is a relatively recent development within music. Up until a few decades ago (roughly the 1980s), the academic study of music (at school, university or conservatoire) focused upon Western classical music. This has broadened out considerably since the 1990s, and popular music is now a staple part of the academic study of music. Popular Music Studies often pays considerable attention to the social, cultural, and political contexts within which popular music is produced and consumed, rather than necessarily focusing upon the musical notes themselves. This course follows this approach. Its central question is not whether the musical grammar of 1960s American popular music was in itself revolutionary, but rather the impact of a period of apparent social revolution on the ways in which popular music was produced and consumed. 6 of 30 Wednesday 24 March 2021 2 The position of women in popular music 2 The position of women in popular music Many different genres of popular music flourished in the US during the 1960s. Rock developed rapidly, girl groups had a huge impact (particularly during the first half of the decade), Motown and soul were massively popular, folk music had a large following, and jazz continued to develop throughout the decade. The British Invasion – which is generally considered to have begun with The Beatles’ first US tour in 1964 – also had a huge impact on American popular music. Many of these popular music genres were intimately associated with the developing counterculture. The marginalised roles which had been ascribed to women within popular music in the 1950s continued throughout the 1960s, however. As musicologist Sheila Whiteley has noted, ‘both the counterculture and progressive rock were largely dominated by men who were reactionary in their attitude towards women’ (Whiteley, 2000, p. 51). This is well exemplified through Janis Joplin’s career. Popular music became one of the most important forms of cultural expression in 1960s America. Beginning in the 1950s, post-war financial affluence created a generation of teenagers with disposable income to spend on records. Improvements in recording technology around the same time also made these easier and cheaper to produce. Developments in electronic instruments and mass production, meanwhile, made electric guitars and amplifiers attainable for teenagers, and electric guitar bands quickly became fashionable. Rock ‘n’ roll (or rock as it is often shortened to) was embraced with enthusiasm by American youth, and musicians such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley and the Comets, and Chuck Berry became household names. Figure 1 Elvis Presley, c.1956 Right from the beginning, however, rock ‘n’ roll was very much male-dominated. As a genre, rock spoke directly to youth culture and became strongly associated with teenage rebellion. The profusion of male musicians within the genre has prompted Julie C. Dunbar to assert that: ‘Rock was more than music; it was a form of rebellion that spoke of sexuality from a male perspective’ (Dunbar, 2011, p. 177). She has further commented that the amplified, electric guitar-based, mainly male rock ‘n’ roll bands created: A strong perceived connection between technology, electricity, and the male sphere […] most rock performers who were visible to the public were men who manipulated electronic instruments and equipment. Behind the scenes was a 7 of 30 Wednesday 24 March 2021 2 The position of women in popular music male-dominated industry of producers, songwriters, publishers, and recording engineers. (Dunbar, 2011, p. 177) Male rock musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970), sang about love, sex, and relationships from positions of power and control, while the aggressive sound of the music, produced by amplified electric guitars, affirmed a dominating masculine sexuality. Women’s position within rock music has been particularly fraught and they were generally pushed into marginal or hidden spaces.

An overdose was the cause of his death. He was 27 years old. 1970, September the 18th: Jimi Hendrix, one of the bests guitarrist of all times, share his last night with Monica Dannemann in Samarkand Hotel, London. When she woke up Jimi was inconscious, yet breathe. He was moved at St. Mary Abbot Hospital, but he was not alive. The cause of his death: asphyxia per vomit. His partner declared that Jimi had had seven tablets of Vesparax, a barbituric, say, 18 times the recommended dose. He was 27 years old. 1970, October the 4th: Janis Joplin, a singer and contraculture icon of the sixties was found dead in her hotel room, at Los Angeles, just when she was going to record the vocal part of Buried Alive in the Blues next morning. A portent, maybe a synchronicity. The official cause of her death was an heroine overdose, probably combined with alcohol effects.

People could not only “jam” to the beats created by singers such as Jimmi Hendrix, The Beatles, and Janis Joplin, but they could also connect and identify with the words that they sang; Songs such as “Let It Be” by the Beatles is a prime example of this type of music. The 1970s brought a decade of national malaise in the United States, as well as a young adult backlash to the teachings of their parents. Young Americans were not only consumed with their own life in high school but also with protesting against the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and rejecting the lifestyles that their parents had imbedded in them since birth.

    Did you know... The citrus industry began in San Bernardino County in 1857 when Anson Van Leuven planted six orange trees on his farm and people drove miles to get them.Captain Nathaniel Pishon planted the first large grove in the area, and Lewis Cram planted 1,500 trees in 1874. The first National Orange Show in 1911 was held in a tent on the corner of 4th and “E” Street to promote the citrus industry. It was the brainchild of Harry Parkins who brought the idea to W.W. Brison who was the president of the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce. The popularity of the National Orange Show grew so the second show in 1912 moved to its new location on 2nd and “E” Street. The directors of the Orange Show needed a permanent home so they bought 42 acres at Mill and “E” Street. In July 1949, the Exhibition Building constructed in 1925 was destroyed by a fire. It was almost 100,000 square feet and was the largest structure of its type in California. The stadium was developed by the National Orange Show and the federal government in 1935 as an “unemployment relief project”. Its construction provided employment for hundreds over a two-year period. Bob Hope and Tex Ritter were among the silver screen celebrities appearing on the entertainment stage in 1951. Hope performed for 13 consecutive years. Did you know... The Swing Auditorium was built in 1949 and named after California state senator, Ralph Swing. Swing was one of the founders of the first National Orange Show in 1911 and served as manager and later board president.

Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer.

The vinyl is beautiful -- flat, jet black, and lustrous -- and the packaging is glossy and substantial. You will peel off the cellophane with great anticipation, and you won't be disappointed. There's not much new that can be said about the music. Kozmic Blues is Janis Joplin's debut album sans Big Brother & the Holding Company. Cheap Thrills is the better-known recording - - number 50 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best albums -- but Kozmic Blues is the more personal statement of Joplin's edge- of-her-vocal-cords blues-soul fusion. The drawn-out opening of "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" percolates with conviction, as does "One Good Man," which Joplin wrote. The pressing is quiet down into the grooves, and there is good definition of everything musical. Kozmic Blues has never been demo material, but here it shows off analog's ease, especially in comparison to the uptight digital sound of the remastered CD, which, to its credit, has three bonus tracks not on the LP, including a cover of Bob Dylan's "Dear Landlord." Speakers Corner delivers a blow to your bank account by including a full-color foldout catalog of their current LPs inside the jacket.
