Soundstage! Janis Joplin - I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! 03.06.09 08:00 SoundStage! Janis Joplin - I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! 03.06.09 08:00 December 2007 Janis Joplin - I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! Speakers Corner/Columbia CS 9913 Format: LP Originally released: 1969 Reissue released: 2007 by Marc Mickelson [email protected] Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment If you habitually dig through dusty piles of albums at garage sales and in thrift stores looking for original pressings of classic albums like I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, this Speakers Corner reissue will be a shock to your (audio) system. The vinyl is beautiful -- flat, jet black, and lustrous -- and the packaging is glossy and substantial. You will peel off the cellophane with great anticipation, and you won't be disappointed. There's not much new that can be said about the music. Kozmic Blues is Janis Joplin's debut album sans Big Brother & the Holding Company. Cheap Thrills is the better-known recording - - number 50 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best albums -- but Kozmic Blues is the more personal statement of Joplin's edge- of-her-vocal-cords blues-soul fusion. The drawn-out opening of "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" percolates with conviction, as does "One Good Man," which Joplin wrote. The pressing is quiet down into the grooves, and there is good definition of everything musical. Kozmic Blues has never been demo material, but here it shows off analog's ease, especially in comparison to the uptight digital sound of the remastered CD, which, to its credit, has three bonus tracks not on the LP, including a cover of Bob Dylan's "Dear Landlord." Speakers Corner delivers a blow to your bank account by including a full-color foldout catalog of their current LPs inside the jacket. You won't be able to buy just one. Chelsey Hess Research Seminar 2 April 2015 The 1970s Counter-Culture through the Lyrics of Janis Joplin Today’s music tends to have the main goal of entertaining instead of spreading a message; the music created, performed, and shared during the 1970s carried with it ideas and new ways of thinking. People could not only “jam” to the beats created by singers such as Jimmi Hendrix, The Beatles, and Janis Joplin, but they could also connect and identify with the words that they sang; Songs such as “Let It Be” by the Beatles is a prime example of this type of music. The 1970s brought a decade of national malaise in the United States, as well as a young adult backlash to the teachings of their parents. Young Americans were not only consumed with their own life in high school but also with protesting against the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and rejecting the lifestyles that their parents had imbedded in them since birth.

Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

  • Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano
Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The name Janis Joplin is practically synonymous with the excesses epitomized by the counterculture of the 1960s: sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, all of which Joplin took to extreme levels. As troubled as she was talented, Joplin has been portrayed in numerous articles, full-length biographies, and documentaries as everything from a reckless, sex-crazed party animal to a victimized, lost little girl who never believed she was lovable. The truth is likely somewhere in between--but what is clear is that Joplin's musical legacy lives on and crosses barriers of gender, race, and class. Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 in small, insular Port Arthur, Texas, where she grew up. She always stood out as a bright, creative misfit in her oil-refinery hometown. She stood out too in her rather conservative family, preferring to pursue visual art and music rather than fulfill her mother's expectations of her becoming a schoolteacher. Joplin reportedly relished the attention that gossip about her bad-girl image brought, but her status as a social outcast hurt her deeply and would remain with her throughout her short life. For a while Joplin attended Lamar State College of Technology and then the University of Texas at Austin, but she decided that school was not for her and never graduated. During her college years she began singing at the hootenannies of the day and at bars in the Austin, San Francisco, and Venice, California areas.

  • Women in Rock OLLI Berkeley Course Material
Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.
