BIOGRAFIA
Janis Lyn Joplin (Port Arthur, Texas - 19 de janeiro de 1943 – Los Angeles, Califórnia - 4 de outubro de 1970) foi uma cantora e compositora norte- americana de blues, influenciada pelo rock e pelo soul com uma voz marcante. Joplin lançou quatro álbuns, desde 1967 até ao lançamento póstumo do álbum Pearl, em 1971.
Desde nova já mostrava duas características que a acompanhariam pelo resto da sua vida: o amor por música e seu engajamento social. Quando adolescente, posicionou-se a favor da integração dos negros na sociedade, no auge da tensão racial vivida nos Estados Unidos, sobretudo no conservador estado sulista. Entre as suas paixões musicais estavam o jazz, o folk e o blues - este último o seu favorito, tendo ela se inspirado em Big Mama Thornton, Bessie Smith e no pioneiro Leadbelly. Joplin começou a cantar em pequenas cafetarias no Texas. Na sua trajectória, junto à relação com a música, vinha o seu envolvimento com a cultura beat dos anos 50. Janis também integrou o movimento hippie, que, nos anos 60, deu mais cores à contracultura dos beatniks, contestando os padrões instituídos e posicionando-se a favor de mudanças, fossem elas direccionadas ao pensamento da sociedade (visto pela juventude como retrógrado), fossem com relação ao fim da guerra no Vietname. A primeira música que Janis terá gravado foi What Good Can Drinkin’ Do, em 1962, na casa de um colega.
Em 1966, a cantora entrou no grupo de rock psicodélico Big Brother & The Holding Company, que no mesmo ano assinou com a gravadora Mainstream Records. Em 1967, a banda lançou um álbum homónimo e no ano seguinte Cheap Thrills, cuja tracklist trazia os hits “ Piece Of My Heart” e “Summertime” (canção composta por George Gershwin, que já havia sido gravada por nomes de peso como Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong e Sam Cooke). Em 1969, saiu da Big Brother e formou a Kozmic Blues Band, lançando I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, disco influenciado pelo seu amor pelo R&B característico dos artistas da gravadora Stax. Entre os momentos mais marcantes de sua carreira, claro, está a apresentação no festival Woodstock, no ano de 1969, que não só contou gigantes da música (como Joan Baez, Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & The Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane e Jimi Hendrix, entre outros), como reuniu ali, na cidade de Bethel, todo um conjunto de factores que caracterizavam o “paz e amor” do movimento hippie.
Em fevereiro de 1970, Janis foi ao Brasil a fim de tentar recuperar-se do seu vício em drogas e álcool, passando o carnaval no Rio de Janeiro ao lado de amigos - no seu retorno aos Estados Unidos, contudo, ela voltou a abusar de substâncias ilícitas. Com o fim da Kozmic Blues Band formou outro grupo, o Full Tilt Boogie Band, com o qual passou a fazer suas tournées. Ainda em 1970, gravou Pearl, que teve lançamento póstumo, no ano de 1971, já que a artista morreu de overdose de heroína em outubro, em Los Angeles, pouco tempo depois do início das gravações. O álbum teve como destaque as músicas “Me and Bobby McGee” (de Kris Kristofferson), e “Mercedes-Benz”, escrita por ela e pelo poeta beatnik Michael McClure.
Ela foi cremada no cemitério-parque memorial de Westwood Village, na cidade de Westwood, Califórnia, e as suas cinzas foram espalhadas pelo Oceano Pacífico numa cerimónia. O álbum Pearl foi lançado 6 meses após sua morte. O filme The Rose, com Bette Midler no papel de Janis Joplin, baseou-se na sua vida.
Ela hoje é lembrada pela sua voz forte e marcante, bastante distante das influências folk mais comuns em sua época, e também pelos temas de dor e perda que escolhia para as suas músicas.
Disse: “Não faça compromissos, você é tudo o que você tem”.
