    3 Articles Male Mythological Beings Among the South Slavs Joseph L. Conrad University of Kansas The South Slavs have a long tradition of belief in protective domestic spirits and in malevolent demons of the field, forest and water.(1) Such mythological creatures were prevalent among all Slavic peoples and are part of the common Indo-European heritage.(2) Whereas most beliefs of this type receded among the East and West Slavs by the end of the nineteenth century, they were maintained in many areas of the Balkans until the beginning of the Second World War.(3) Ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the 1960s-1980s has shown that many farmers and stockbreeders in the more remote villages (of former Yugoslavia) have not abandoned their traditional beliefs. For example, the protector housesnake,(4) mischievous forest and dangerous water spirits, and many lesser mythological beings have been reported in several South Slavic territories in the last forty years. Many traditional domestic rituals have their origin in the conviction that the family ancestor's spirit resides under the threshold or near the open hearth and, if properly cared for, will ensure happiness and good fortune for the family. In Russia that spirit was manifest in the domovoj, "house spirit," but as this name itself was taboo, he was referred to in euphemisms such as ded or deduška, "grandfather," and xozjain "master." Offerings of food, especially bread and salt, the traditional symbols of hospitality, were routinely left for the domovoj at night before the family retired. The

Yaroslav Gorbachov Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago [email protected] Abstract As attested, the Slavic pantheon is rather well-populated. However, many of its nu- merous members are known only by their names mentioned in passing in one or two medieval documents. Among those barely attested Slavic deities, there are a few whose very existence may be doubted. This does not deter some scholars from articulating rather elaborate theories about Slavic mythology and cosmology. The article discusses two obscure Slavic deities, “Black God” and “White God,” and, in particular, reexamines the extant primary sources on them. It is argued that “Black God” worship was limited to the Slavic North-West, and “White God” never existed. Keywords Chernobog – Belbog – Belbuck – Tjarnaglófi – Vij – Slavic dualism Introduction A discussion of Slavic mythology and pantheons is always a difficult, risky, and thankless business. There is no dearth of gods to talk about. In the literature they are discussed with confidence and, at times, some bold conclusions about Slavic cosmology are made, based on the sheer fact of the existence of a par- ticular deity. In reality, however, many of the “known” Slavic gods are not much more than a bare theonym mentioned once or twice in what often is a late, un- reliable, or poorly interpretable document. The available evidence is undeni- ably scanty and the dots to be connected are spaced far apart.     DOI: 10.308161ICONN412017155 Sacred elements in historical Western Ukrainian oikonymy Yaroslav Redkva Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine Abstract: The place of sacred toponymy is determined by the important role of religion in society. Therefore, sacred interests are at the centre of a person’s atten- tion, as they constitute a reflection in his/her consciousness of deep mental fea- tures rooted in the genesis of any nation. In accounting for a system of developmental factors and geographical and spatial organisation of territorial toponymic systems, the detection and establishment of regularities in their formation and functioning is impossible without establishing the origin of historical names of settlements, a considerable part of which are oik- onyms whose etymology contains a significant sacred element. Sacred names of places of the former Ruske Woyewodstwo (in the fourteenth to twenty-first centuries) are analysed in this paper. At present, the area is a territory comprising modern Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Ternopil Oblasts (Western Ukraine), in particular, Богородичин/Bohorodychyn, Богородчани/ Bohorodchany, *Вознесіння/*Voznesinnia, Воскресинці/Voskresyntsi, Спас/ Spas, Троїця/Troitsia, Хвалибога/Khvalyboha. It has been established as a basis of etymological analysis that place names in the aforementioned area make up a particular onomastic (oikonymic) field, united by the meaning of sacredness. They hold an important place in the religious world model of Ukrainians despite unjustified ideological attempts to forcefully rename them in the Soviet period. Keywords: anthroponym, oikonym, sacred place name, toponymic systems, ono- mastic field. In any society the religious sphere carries out major spiritual and cultural func- tions. It encompasses practising different cults (prayer, rites, and holidays) that take place in different cult buildings (churches, monasteries, religious communities, etc.).

    St. John’s Cathedral Wrocław The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Wrocław, (Polish: Archikatedra św. Jana Chrzciciela, German: Breslauer Dom, Kathedrale St. Johannes des Täufers), is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wrocław and a landmark of the city of Wrocław in Poland. The cathedral, located in the Ostrów Tumski district, is a Gothic church with Neo-Gothic additions. The current standing cathedral is the fourth church to have been built on the site. The cathedral was almost entirely destroyed (about 70% of the construction) during the Siege of Breslau and heavy bombing by the Red Army in the last days of World War II. Parts of the interior fittings were saved and are now on display at the National Museum in Warsaw. The initial reconstruction of the church lasted until 1951, when it was reconsecrated by Archbishop Stefan Wyszyński. In the following years, additional aspects were rebuilt and renovated. The original, conical shape of the towers was restored only in 1991. Wroclaw Town Hall The Old Town Hall (Polish: Stary Ratusz) of Wroclaw stands at the center of the city’s Market Square (rynek). Wroclaw is the largest city in western Poland and isthe site of many beautiful buildings. The Old Town Hall's long history reflects the developments that have taken place in the city over time since its initial construction. The town hall serves the city of Wroclaw and is used for civic and cultural events such as concerts held in its Great Hall. In addition to a concert hall, it houses a museum and a basement restaurant.
