The Inventory Entry (which follows) provides a general outline of the papers, their arrangement and contents . Limitations of the descriptio n At present, the Finding Aid provides detailed coverage only for the two reels of microfilm from the Ontario Archives and for the Baldwin-Ross family papers in volumes 9-10 For all other segments of the collection, the Inventory Entry provides the only substantial description available . There are in volume 8 some notes made in preparation for a calendar o f the papers which were transcribed in volumes 1-3, but those notes are of severely limited usefulness . Citations In view of the lack of pagination in some volumes, care should be taken in providing citations . The booklet SUGGESTIONS FOR THE CITATION OF ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS . provides examples, of formats . Restrictions While access to volumes 9-10 is limited (as noted in the Access Restrictions files), the finding aid for that portion of the papers is open for consultation . The access restriction applies equally to reels H-1207 and H-1208. iii MG 24 BALDWIN, William Warren (1775-1844) and Robert (1804-1858) B 11 Originals, n.d., 1816-1888, c.1922. 30 cm. William Warren Baldwin (1775-1844) was a physician, lawyer and politican. A member of the Legislative Assembly for Upper Canada, 1820-1824 and 1828-1830, he became one of the leading members of the Reform Party. In 1836 he served as the President of the Constitutional Reform Society, formed by the moderate reformers. Summoned to the Legislative Council late in 1843, he died before he could take his seat. His son, Robert Baldwin (1804-1858), a lawyer, served for a very brief period in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canda, 1829-1830 and for one month in 1836 as a member of the Executive Council. A member of the Legislative Assembly, 1841-1851, he served with Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine as the chief administrators of the government of the united Canadas. During the second ministry, responsible government was conceded by the Governor General, Lord Elgin. John Ross (1818-1871) was a Toronto lawyer who, in 1848, was appointed a legislative councillor for Canada. In 1851 he married Robert Baldwin's daughter Eliza, and in that same year he was appointed Solicitor General for Upper Canada. Between 1851 and 1867 he held a variety of offices in the Legislative Council. In 1867 he was called to the Senate as a senator for the new province of Ontario. During the 1850's Ross served as government director of the Grank Trunk Railway and was for a time also President of the Railway. Finding Aid No. 544 consists of lists of the correspondence in volumes 9-10 arranged chronologically and alphabetically by author, and a photocopy of a descriptive list prepared by the Archives of Ontario to accompany the documents found on PAC reels M-741 and M-742. Correspondence, 1807-1855. Correspondence of William Warren Baldwin and his son Robert Baldwin, including letters from C.B. Wyatt to W.W. Baldwin, 1807-1815, and correspondence of Robert Baldwin copied from the originals in the holdings of the Toronto Public Library (transcripts, 8 cm, volumes 1-3). Also included are notes compiled by Josephine Phelan for a calendar of the Baldwin papers in the Toronto Public Library, c.1922 (originals, 10 cm; volume 8). Received in 1915 and 1922. Letters of Robert Baldwin to Eliza Sullivan, 1825, who in that same year became his wife, and to his son-in-law John Ross, 1850-1855, including Robert Baldwin's instructions for his burial and a genealogical chronicle of the Baldwin family to 1837 (transcripts, 66 pages; volume 4). Presented in 1932 by Mr. Harry Baldwin. A copy of the Baldwin genealogy presented in 1951 by Mr. C.G. Acquired in 1973. Letter from John Buck to Robert Baldwin, 9 October 1844, concerning his decision on the choice of a candidate for an unspecified office (original, 3 pages; volume 5). Correspondence from Robert Baldwin to William Lyon Mackenzie, 1850, and from Marshall Spring Bidwell, 1837 (photostatic copies, II pages; volume 6). Copied from the originals in the Toronto Public Library and presented in 1963 by the estate of Dr. C.M. MacLean. Correspondence from Robert Baldwin to his son, Robert, 1836, and to his Aunt Sullivan, 1835 (photocopies, 7 pages; volume 7). Copied in 1971 from the originals in the possession of Mr. & Mrs. R.M. Baldwin. Baldwin family papers, 1791-1960. Correspondence and other papers of William Warren Baldwin and Robert Baldwin relating to land, business and family matters. Much of the material concerns business conducted by Quetton St. George who managed the business affairs of the Baldwin family, and his family. Also included are letterbooks containing legal opinions and advice rendered by Robert Baldwin and others, 1839-1849 (microfilm reels M- 741 and M-742). Copied in 1964 from originals in the Archives of Ontario.
