12 Forming mountains and islands Sometimes a volcano erupts under the ocean. Lava spills into the water, cools, and becomes hard. It builds up to form mountains under water. The top of the mountain that is seen above the water’s surface becomes an island. As more lava erupts, mountains can even form on the islands.

This island is actually the top of an underwater volcano. 13 What shapes rocks?
