Inevitably, the first section had me writing too much but I have left plenty of 'gaps' for others to contribute. The second section will be much more text based and will depend upon your insights.     RgVeda Page 1 of 225 LAST MANTRA The Rig Veda is not the whole shruti, but it enunciates the most central part of it and lays the foundations for all the rest. It is befitting, then, to conclude this anthology with the final mantra of the Rig Veda, just as we opened it with the invocation of the first. Having traversed the long road of praise, exaltation, meditation, and sacrifice, having traveled through the upper realms of the Gods and the underworld of the demons, having reached the loftiest peaks of mystical speculation and touched the lowest depths of the human soul, having gazed, as far as we could, upon the cosmos and upon the divine, we arrive at this last stanza, which is dedicated to the human world and is a prayer for harmony and peace among Men by means of the protection of Agni and all the Gods, but ultimately through the acceptance by Men of their human calling. The last mantra knows only Man's ordinary language and Man's own cherished ideas; it comes back to the simplicity of the fact of being human: a union of hearts and a oneness of spirit, the overcoming of isolating individualisms by harmonious living together, because Man as person is always society and yet not plural. He is a unity with so many strings that they incur the risk of wars and strife, but also offer the possibility of a marvelous harmony and concord. IN a former paper on " Manu, the progenitor of the Aryan Indians," published in the Society's Journal,21 have attempted to shew that in general the authors of the hymns of the Eig- veda regarded the whole of the Aryan people, embracing not only the priests and the chiefs, but the middle classes also of the population, fes descended from one common father, or ancestor, whom they designate by the name of Manu. This reference to a common progenitor excludes, of course, the sup- position that the writers by whom it is made could have had any belief in the myth which became afterwards current among their countrymen, that their nation consisted of four castes, dif- fering naturally in dignity, and separately created by Brahma. That essay, however, leaves out of consideration any notices which the Big-veda may contain regarding the different classes of which the society contemporary with its composition was made up. The Rig Veda texts are a collection of the work of generations of poets, and priests extending over many centuries. Books II to VII are considered as the work of a single seer and/or tradition (just as the early Jewish prophetic schools), and so are called "family books”. The hymns in books I and X are composed by different families or schools. Books II to VII are the oldest. Book X is the most recent and is written as late as the fourth century AD. Earlier portions of Rig Veda were written down in Vedic (Indo–Euorpean, Avestan) language only by the second century BC even though it might have been in existence and use in fragments much earlier. But Mandala I and X were written probably only by the fourth century AD. All of these were modified in time by those who retold the hymns or rewritten them with additions, interpolations and embellishments. Thus we should expect redactions and interpolations to help later religious movements or for sheer poetic presentation. They were not considered sacred scriptures until as late as the sixth century AD. They were essentially used in sacrifices and yajnas. The language, style and content of Rig Veda X are totally distinct from the rest of the Rig Vedic hymns which are addressed to forces of nature.

Draupadi Devi P.G. College,Khajani, Gorakhpur The worship of mother goddesses in early Vedi India was very significant. All the related classics give ample evidences about the importance of the mother goddesses in the observation period. Among the goddesses known from that time of literature may first be made of Usha, Ida, Sarswati, Aditi, Prithivi, Raka, Siniwali, Swaha, Bharati etc. In the Rigveda as many as twenty hymns are devoted to Usha. She has all the ingredient of becoming an all creating, all preserving and evil destroying deity. V. M. Apte gives very important light about the Usha. He renders the view of Rigvedic Rishis in the following stanza.1 I.Light us up with happiness, O Ushas, daughter of heaven, with great lustre, O radiant one, with wealth, O bountiful goddess. 9.OUsha, shine with shimmering radiance, O daughter of heaven, bringing us ample happiness, as you shew your light upon the daily sacrifices. In the case of Ushas; the goddess of Dawn, the personification is slight, the poet never loosing sight of the beautiful physical phenomena behind the deity.2 The word Ushas, derived from Shauchhante, means the dawn, is traced to uchha, to shine, the actual prototype is us- to shine, Avestan form of the Ushas is usaiti means shines.3 On the basis of Rigvedic hymns it seems to that Usha clearly related with Sun and she is the goddess of dawn.4The beauty of heaven and awakening of the world.

However the number of hymns in RV dedicated to Surya is small. But Agni has about 200 hymns and Indra, 250 out of about one thousand. The reason for the prominence of Agni and Indra is that human beings in their quest towards the all-sided perfection need the help of Agni and Indra much more and hence pray for them more often. The analogy is that of a student who spends more years at the pre-university level than in the university level itself. The contribution of every rishi in the Rigveda begins with several hymns to Agni, then to Indra and then to the other devas. The RV begins with a hymn to Agni. According to tradition, the japa or conscious repetition of this hymn reveals the knowledge this deity stands for. Agni in the Veda is not merely the fire on the vedic altar or even the deity behind this physical fire.
