The State of GGR

There are only two events left on the GGR calendar for this year. Driver's Ed at Laguna Seca on December 9 - there are still slots available and the weather is holding up very nicely - and the Friday Night Social on December 21. The club has enjoyed a good year in 2007, yet some challenges face us.

Andrew Forrest and the entire Time Trial crew have done a terrific job modernizing and revitalizing the TT Series. On-line registration, including credit card payment, was implemented this year and is now fully operational. New rules have allowed modern street to participate in Driver's Education events. New people have been trained to staff the events and to instruct participants. Finally, for the first time since 2004, we have a date at Laguna Seca, our area's most famous track. The net result of all these efforts is that participation in the Time Trial Series was up this year for the first time since 2003. The events are not sold out yet, so there is more room to accommodate members who want to experience their at speed.

John Celona has worked out all the kinks in the production and distribution of the electronic Nugget. Don't believe anyone who talks about "computer standards"; there is no such thing. John's task has not been easy, and future Nugget editors thank him profusely for all the roto-rooting he has done. You will have noticed that the Nugget now arrives in your inbox in a timely fashion with up-to-date information, that the number of pages has increased, and that the built-in links to websites add much depth to the content. Nearby, the Diablo and Redwood regions have followed GGR's lead and also moved to an electronic publication. The transition from paper to bits did not please everyone, and there is certainly something to be said for the warmth of printed material on the coffee table. I hope the improved timeliness and content make up for this shortcoming. Think also of all the trees we have saved.

Bill Dally, Paul Smith and the autocross gang managed to put on 10 autocross events this year, amounting to almost ten thousand timed laps; this despite many difficulties with the venues. Candlestick was repaved, and we had anticipated the surface would be much improved. The results were the exact opposite, with slippery gravel that hurts the cars. Alameda was not available all year. Zone 7 tried running at Altamont, but the GGR autocross chairs are concerned that unplanned contact with the outer wall would be costly. Autocross is supposed to be safe. Marina is a good and low cost venue, yet the location seems too remote for many of our members. Next year looks better already, thanks to Marc Blatt's diligent efforts, as we are on the verge of signing a three year deal with Alameda. However, all these nice large parking lots are threatened by development, so we need a long term solution. At its December meeting, the board will vote on a motion to set aside part of the money we are saving by publishing the Nugget electronically to participate in the acquisition of a permanent autocross site, along with SCCA and other clubs in the San Francisco area.

Larry and Greg Adams organized the ever popular Carlsen Concours in August. Over 35 cars were scored and became eligible for year-end awards in the Zone 7 Concours Series. The Carlsen Concours and the Taste-of-the-Track program combined generated enough contributions that this year GGR is able to make a $3000 donation to Child Advocates of Santa Clara County, our designated charity. Another 35 members participated in the other Larry Adams organized event, the Coyote Run. This rallye attracts a crowd of regulars, as well as a number of newbies. It has become another fixture of GGR.

The club's social events are growing, too. Cindy and I just came back from the Boxster Brunch at Alice's Restaurant, which was attended by over 30 people. Carol and George Grialou have been organizing this bi-monthly gathering for over 3 years now, and the attendance has grown steadily. They even welcome lost souls like me who do not drive a Boxster. Mid-year, Mark Powell stepped in to the role of Social Director and immediately proceeded to organize excellent visits of race teams at Infineon and Laguna Seca on race week-ends. The new members' tour last spring was also a success with over 50 participants.

Now to the biggest challenge: we need more volunteers. As I mentioned last month, we need a new webmaster to take over after Susan Angebranndt's retirement at the end of December. We need help with advertising and sponsorships. We need to improve our new members program. And we certainly could start new club activities if anyone wanted to organize them. The club only operates when its members volunteer. I urge you to get involved.

To cap the year 2007, don't miss the Year-End Banquet on January 13 at the Blackhawk car museum. There will be guided tours of the museum, a fabulous buffet brunch, plenty of Porsche owners to socialize with, and competition awards. Even if you have not participated in a single GGR event in the last 5 years, this is THE event to attend. Cindy and I hope to see you there.

This is the last column I write as President of GGR. I have enjoyed the past 2 years, meeting many of you, and attempting to continue the legacy of my predecessors. Despite the long list of good things listed above, the reality is that I personally did very little. The real stars are the board members and the dozens of individuals who have contributed and are continuing to contribute their time and their passion to bring you the Nugget, the website, the track week- ends, the autocross days, the social gatherings, the concours and the rallyes. To all of you: a huge thank you. And I want to acknowledge all who have stepped up to volunteer as board members and committee chairs for 2008.

Finally, I want to mention that in the two years I was President, each year a GGR member won a new Porsche in the PCA National raffle. Bill Dally has promised he will try to improve on this record.

Happy Holidays and see you at Blackhawk on January 13.

Letter from the Editor

--by John Celona, Nugget Editor

A Few Days Late!

My apologies for this Nugget arriving a few days late rather than the first of the month I've been aiming for. Last week was furiously busy work-wise, so today is the first day I've had a chance to get to this. With a little luck, it will be done by the end of the day and, through the double miracles of electronic distribution and the hardware/software on your computer allowing it to be displayed, you'll have this in the evening. (I hope!)

I do know that some folks are having continuing issues viewing this newsletter. Please be assured I've made every effort to avoid any non-standard stuff to minimize problems. Nonetheless, the variations of hardware and software on peoples' individual computers means some people will have problems. Hopefully, downloading the PDF from the web site provides a fallback if this newsletter doesn't display correctly on your computer. As I always tell people, I don't worry about computers taking over the world, I just worry about whether they will print!

As always, thanks for reading. John

Competition Corner --by Dan Thompson, Competition Director

Rules Changes for 2008

Below are the proposals that were accepted by the DEC for the 2008 competitive season. Please make sure to read these carefully since they will effect many folks that have cars prepared for the GGR Time Trial Series. Especially #4.

1) Change the autocross base points for all models of 914 to be 50 points more than their time trial base points.

2) Reduce the time trial base points for the 986 Boxster S by 25 points and then change the autocross base points for all models of Boxsters and Caymans to be 25 points more than their time trial base points.

3) (Procedural) Permanently adopt the rules in effect for track events this year (aka "2007b rules") as a baseline for all rules change proposals for 2008. The rules in effect for track events this year restrict the effect of Time Trial rules (as opposed to Driver's Education rules) to the portion of a track event in which timed runs occur. At all other times during a track event, Driver's Education rules are in effect. The reason this proposal is made is that the 2007b rules are temporary due to their being issued as a "Tech Bulletin" as a consequence of the late date in 2006 at which they were proposed. If the 2007b rules are not adopted permanently (or as a baseline to which other 2008 rules change proposals are applied) then the rules revert to the set published just prior to these being adopted ("2007a rules").

4) Harness Systems: If the participant chooses to install a 5 or 6 point driving harness ( four point systems are not safe and therefore not allowed) several changes to the automobile must be made to create a safe occupant restraint system. Harnesses must include a antisubmarine strap and be mounted in an approved manner consistent the manufacturer's instructions. The Harness system must be used in conjunction with a which has the supplied routing holes for the shoulder and anti-submarine belts. All pieces of the restraint system must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. This means that a seat is required to have the proper routing holes for the harness as supplied by the seat manufacturer for the shoulder and anti-submarine straps. The shoulder straps should be mounted at 90 degrees to the axis of your spine or at most 40 degrees down from horizontal. Because the addition of the harness system means that the occupants are fastened upright in the vehicle, a properly padded roll bar or roll cage is strongly encouraged to complete the SYSTEM. The use of one without the other may result in an unsafe environment and is not a COMPLETE SYSTEM. Due to UV degradation and wear the harness webbing must be replaced every five years. Cars with driver and passenger air bags will be allowed to participate in DE while using stock 3 point belts and stock . Cars participating in Time Trial will be required to have the aforementioned 5-6 points harnesses and the appropriate seats. The use of a 5-6 point harness system will negate the usage of a stock style seat. Any car that does not have a driver and passenger air bag and 3 point belts will be required to have 5-6 point harnesses and appropriate seat for DE or TT.

5) a. Car numbers (both) and competition class letters (TT-only) must be on the car and correct for the driver at all times in order for course personnel, event officials and your fellow competitors to identify cars and their drivers. Numbers must be a contrasting color, and distinct from a distance. Reflecting numbers are discouraged and shoe polish is not allowed. No numbers on windows. Numbers must be from 8 to 10 inches high and 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide and must be securely attached. The number on the rear may be only half the regular size but still legible. The car classification letters should be half the size of the competition number and placed after the number on both sides of the car. b. Location, style, legibility and mounting of all car numbers are subject to approval of the Tech Inspector. Examples of considerations the Tech Inspector may employ in approving a car's numbers include (but are not limited to): Numbers must be a contrasting color, and distinct from a distance. Reflecting numbers are discouraged and shoe polish is not allowed. No numbers on windows. Numbers must be from 8 to 10 inches high and 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide and must be securely attached. The number on the rear need be only half the regular size but still legible. The car classification letters should be half the size of the competition number and placed after the number on both sides of the car. c. Numbers shall be placed on both sides of the car (required), and on the front and the rear of the car (recommended). d. The driver number is your GGR Certification Number. Drivers sharing a car may use the same car number but with an alphabetic suffix (e.g. 'L') attached to the numbers on both sides of the car to distinguish the drivers.

6) 993TT has base points of 550

7) Add PCA National rules in autocross for Showroom stock rules

8) Add 25 points to the base points for a RSamerica for both ax and tt rules

9) points Wear rating (wr) wr >/=200=0 points wr 200-101=25 points wr 100-50=50 points wr 49-0 = 100 points full race slicks 175 points

10) wheel width increases will be aloted 10 points per inch or fraction thereof instead of 25.

11) starting wheel width for all 914s will be 6 inches

Autocross #10 --by Andrew Blyholder --Sunday, November 4 at the Marina Airport

The last autocross of the year was a beautiful send off at Marina Airport with a gorgeous, clear, sunny day. Dan Thompson thought he'd designed a good course for his agile 914, however the big motored 911s found it to their liking too. Despite the efforts of a good crop of 914s, rear engines and horsepower dominated the day.

Top time of day went to Rob Boynton in his twin-turbo GT2. Rob nipped his co-driver, Scott Fraser, by just a tenth.

Top time for Ladies was Dana Ambrisko, coming out on top in another tight fight, topping Karan Gayraund by under 2 tenths. The one season championship not yet sewed up coming into this event was the PAX crown. Larry Sharp and Terry Zaccone came into the event dead even in points. Larry had first ups, running in the first run group, and setting the bar for Terry, following up in the second run group. Terry pushed hard all day, but when the dust and tire smoke settled at the end of the day, Larry had the top PAX time for the day, collecting his second PAX season championship.

The results are here.

Congrats to all the season champions!

PAX Larry Sharp 914GT Andrew Blyholder AX01 Rob Boynton/ Peter Von Behrens (co-champions) AX02 David Bunch AX02 L Sharon Neidel AX03 Roger Haskin AX04 Monty Pack AX05 Ken Jones AX06 Bill Pickering AX06 L Doris Pickering AX07 Bill Dally AX08 Dan Thompson AX08 L Michelle Melka AX09 Dave McGuigan AX10 Terry Zaccone AX10 L Kendall Carraner AX11 Don Clarke AX11 L Trista Chen AX12 Larry Sharp AX12 L Doris Pickering AX13 Lee Richardson AX13 L Carol McNamara AX14 Larry Inman AX14 L Eugenie Thomas AX15 Anne Roth AX16 Jorge Carpio

See the complete season's standings here. And the complete PAX standing's here.

Holiday Indulgences

--by John Celona, The Power Chef

We are in the wonderful time of year when the parties, food, and fun are coming fast and furious. For me and for many of my friends, the calendar is simply packed with events and the challenge is to fit everything in. As much as I might like some of them magically transported to a rainy patch of February, they do seem to cluster between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

I am all for enjoying all of it. Unfortunately, though I would happily propose a motion to the board to make December calories not count, I doubt my pinguis puga pyga* would find it any more binding than anyone else's.

So, not wanting either to miss out on the holiday indulgences nor to find come January that my trousers prevent breathing or sitting, I've developed some strategies for missing out on the extra pounds without missing out on the fun. I call them my

Holiday Damage Control Strategies for Guilt-Free Fun

1. Earlier in the day before an event, eat something healthy (high-fiber and low-fat) so you're not totally starving when you arrive at an event. A big salad for lunch or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread would fit the bill. 2. If you're planning on having some wine or champagne, have it first upon arrival at the event--before you start eating. Then, when you're ready to eat, switch to water or soft drinks only. This has a number of benefits: (a) you get the maximum effect from that first glass or two; (b) you avoid the overreating that tends to come with eating and drinking alcohol at the same time; and (c) you're more sober as the evening progresses instead of less so. Caveat! If you can't hop on one foot while patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the end of the evening, do call a cab or have someone else drive home. 3. Make sure you have some high-fiber, low-fat food as part of the meal. Go heavy on the salads or vegetables (assuming there are some veggies not in butter!). This helps fill you up on less calorific food, plus the fiber helps to reduce calorie absorption. 4. Just sample the truly sinfully delicious stuff. As Newton first showed mathematically (later demonstrated empirically by Adam Smith), enjoyment diminishes with incremental consumption. A second piece of cheesecake won't make you twice as happy as the first one. Try a little of the melt brie rather than big gobs of it, and have along with it as much of the fresh fruit as you like. 5. Be a picky eater. There's bound to be stuff there which is not to your liking. Just pass on it altogether, and save the calories for the stuff you really like. If you need to be polite, put a little on your plate, but manage not to eat it. If caught in this ploy, simply explain it's so delicious you're going back for more. 6. Do keep up your physical activity. Whether that's working in the yard or going to the health club, those extra calories you burn off are especially important when input is threatening to overwhelm output.

Above all, be and stay safe, and enjoy your holidays. That's what they're there for.

Bon appetit, The Power Chef

40 Years Ago in The Nugget: December 1967 --by Jim Bauman, Notorious ex-editor of The Nugget (presently at large)

Christmas 1967! Stu Grannis was retiring as GGR President, Dwight Mitchell was continuiing on for anotehr year as the club's activities chairman. Mitchell beat out Arlen Riggs and Bob Garretson to win Class 6 of the 1967 Autocross Series. Jim Wellington (pictured above in #33) has the following ad in the classifieds:

Abarth Carrera, 1960, 356B with Italian Abarth body. Powered by 587/1 two-liter engine. Chassis, body, and all running gear in excellent or near excellent condition. One of 19 classics built in 1960 foer the factory. Only three in the U.S at present. Will arrive in U.S. December 1st. -- $6000. Contact JIM WELLINGTON.

OK Jim, if you didn't get any takers, and you still have the car, I have the $6K! Jim was also selling some parts laying around his garage. A 1600cc Carrera engine for $850, and some brand new Weber cards for a 911S for $210.

Also in the classifieds, Bruce Anderson was looking for a 1956 or later Speedster, and any Speedster parts lying around. Wow. Look at the price of that dinner! And doesn't that look like Shirley Neidel?

The dinner includes wine too! Of course, back in 1967, there were only two California wines available - a hideous Cabernet from San Martin, and a Sparkling Duck something.

(Note to wine snobs: Just Kidding!)

Porsche Web Cinema Application Plugs in Viewers to Movies, Music, Rare Racing Footage--Even Famous Engine Roar!

Porsche announced it has launched a new "Web Cinema" on its Web site that offers Porsche sports-car fans and admirers the ability to view extraordinary Porsche films. This new Web technology gives browsers a "virtual" front-row seat to experience much of what embodies Porsche's legendary driving. The site features rare product development documentaries, inside-the-factory research and even brings the auditory passion of Porsche to life with sounds of the famous engines from the German car maker.

All of this is now live on the Company's Web site, www.porscheusa.com.

"We are constantly seeking ways to connect consumers to our exciting world of races, rallies and sports car driving," said David Pryor, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America. "With the new web-cinema in place, viewers can feel a part of the action anytime; and the engine sounds truly are music to the ears of a true Porsche lover."

In addition to audio files, browsers logging on to www.porscheusa.com will find the movies "True to yourself" about the Porsche Cayman S and "No" about the 911 Carrera 4/4S, both presented with the Golden Camera Award in Hollywood. Reports from the American Le Mans Series and Transsyberia Rally are also available.

Porsche Hybrid History Porsche's Hybrid Legacy Spans 100 Years

Ferdinand Porsche developed the world's first advanced , all-wheel drive car and hybrid car at the turn of the 20th Century

Porsche®, a name long associated with engineering innovation, stunned the automotive world by introducing the world's first advanced electric car - a vehicle that also led to the world's first hybrid car. While this "green" alternative to petroleum-based transportation may be considered a mundane news story in the 21st Century when green technology announcements are a daily occurrence, a 24-year-old engineer by the name of developed, produced and raced such a car more than 100 years ago when horseless carriages were in their infancy. Working for Jacob Lohner & Co. in Vienna, Austria in 1899, Ferdinand Porsche - father of Dr. Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche who in 1948 founded the Porsche high performance sports car and SUV company we know today - developed and built the world's first automobile that used electric wheel hub motors rather than a fossil-fuel combustion engine and transmission to drive the wheels. It was called the Lohner-Porsche.

A Lohner Porsche and concept versions of the Hybrid Cayenne® SUV can be seen at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show to be held Nov. 14-25, 2007.

Ferdinand Porsche installed his patented invention, the electric wheel hub motor, directly on the front wheels. Standard output was 2.5 horsepower at 120 rpm, but they were capable of 7 horsepower each for up to 20 minutes.

This technology could provide speeds of just over 10 mph and a top speed of about 31 mph. Using a 44-cell battery with 300 ampere hours and 80 volts, Porsche's new vehicle had a range of about 30 miles.

Hailed as "the greatest invention of the age" by one trade journal because electric wheel hub motors eliminated the need for a transmission, gears, belts, chains, differentials and other moving parts and could be produced very quickly, this drivetrain was 83 percent efficient because there was no mechanical loss due to friction. Its debut at the World's Fair in Paris on April 14, 1900 hurdled Ferdinand Porsche to worldwide fame overnight and prompted Lohner to produce and sell well over 300 such vehicles. Soon after, Porsche took his invention to the race track. On Sept. 23, 1900 he fitted his electric wheel hub motor car with a larger battery and set his first speed record at Semmering, covering the 6.2-mile route in less than 15 minutes with an average speed of 25.5 mph. The best internal combustion engine powered car averaged 21.5 mph.

Later that year, Porsche fitted his wheel hub motors on all four wheels, thus producing the world's first all-wheel drive car. To give the car sufficient power and range, it required nearly 4,000 lbs. in batteries, proving to be the same challenge faced by today's engineers. He tried to solve this dilemma by fitting the all-electric speed-record car with two De Dion Bouton gasoline engines producing current for the electric powertrain. The result was the world's first hybrid.

He again surprised the automotive world when this new concept debuted at the 1901 Parisian Auto Salon. His design used the 3.5-horsepower combustion engines to drive dual generators to supply current to the two wheel hub motors on the front wheels. It also was possible to run the gasoline engines after start up to so that the electric motor functioned as a generator and kept the battery charged. If necessary, both the combustion engines and electric motors could be used in parallel. Porsche stepped up performance and created variations delivering 5 to 12 horsepower. And in 1902 he piloted his hybrid during trial runs at the Exelberg race, finishing first in the large-car class and third overall.

Porsche went on to develop automobiles for Austro-Daimler, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart, and Steyr-Werke AG in Austria before forming Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. He is most remembered as the inventor of the Beetle, yet his innovative work in the areas of electric and hybrid drive systems is substantial. His wheel hub motor resurfaced decades later when the concept was used to power the Lunar Rover during NASA's missions to the moon. Today, his innovative spirit lives on at Porsche AG's Research and Development Center in Weissach, where the company is applying its engineering strength to develop hybrid systems for the Cayenne SUV and the upcoming Panamera four-door gran turismo.

New Webmaster Needed

--by Susan Angebranndt, webmaster, former club vice president, past winner of the Perc Bliss Award, and mother of Lila

After 7 years as GGR webmaster, I'm stepping down as of December 31. The website is where GGR members get their up-to- date information about club and zone activities. Here's your opportunity to give back to the club by becoming the webmaster. You'd be free to redesign or rearrange the site in any way you want (there's no reason to keep the current design). Want to find out more? Click to contact me by email.

If you missed it, election results were in the Board of Directors meeting minutes. Thanks very much to everyone who voted. We actually got quite a few more ballots than last year. Hopefully, that's a sign that we're doing something right.

As always, thanks for reading.
