The aerodynamics engineers also fell back on their motorsport experience. The geometry of the fully cased carbon fibre underbody is of a kind normally only found on racing cars. With a length of 4.61 metres, a width of 1.92 metres, a height of 1.16 metres and a wheel- base of 2.73 metres, the roadster has an unladen weight of 1,380 kilo- grammes.

The effortlessness of an unpreced- ented driving experience is not only based on concentration on the really essential elements of a sports car. A completely new design concept was also used: both the monocoque and the entire engine mounting are made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. At the beginning of March the big day is 590 Nm. It has now been more than fulfilled. For the Carrera GT, the engineers and racing specialists in Weissach used all the technological possibilities of modern sports car engineering, and even went off in new directions.

The result is a work of art, combining the power and temperament of a racing car with the everyday practica- lity of a sports car. The Carrera GT has a thoroughbred V 10-cylinder racing engine, whose capacity has been incre- ased from 5.5 to 5.7 litres. The Carrera GT is slowed down by the PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake), which, since 2001, Porsche has been the first manufacturer to offer series vehicles (GT2). The PCCC (Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch), which demonstrates high performance, small dimensions and outstanding durability, is a world first. The extre- mely light magnesium wheels are pro- duced using a special forging method and are being used in a series vehicle for the first time. The tyres, with their large tread, have been specially deve- loped for the Carrera GT: 265/35 ZR 19 front and 335/30 ZR 20 rear.

The roadster, which is produced in Leipzig, has an easy to operate roof system. It consists of two individual lightweight carbon fibre shells (2.4 kilo- grammes each), which can be stored in the front luggage compartment.

Peter Meister, sport co-ordinator at the Porsche Club Bern emphasises that “this costs the Clubs a lot of money. Planning, advertising, renting the circuit including the safety facilities, organising prizes, it all adds up”. That is not all, as a supporting programme is often also organised. And that is not forgetting the fact that every Club that organises an event always needs a large number of voluntary helpers. From this point of view, it is particu- larly commendable that the Club sport calendar of events is so full.

European Concours d’Élégance in Schwetzingen

The European Concours d’Élégance in Schwetzingen is being held once again this year. From 4th to 6th July 2003, organisers are expecting more than 150 of the best oldtimers from around the world in the grounds of the castle in Schwetzingen. Porsche Club News Editor Report series: “The first 40 years of the Porsche 911” Episode 1: The first Porsche 911 assessed by the industry press

We drove: The whole car is designed to be a com- fortable cruising vehicle. The empha- sis has thus been placed on a quiet engine, good engine and bodywork silencing and excellent suspension comfort. However, a car in this class must also have excellent driving quali- ties and a completely new chassis has been designed to meet these two requirements. There is no doubt that the new sports car, which will be pro- duced in Zuffenhausen from the end of August, is one of the most interesting cars in the world.

Although the 911 had already been presented in 1963 at the IAA in Frank- furt, series production did not start until the second half of the following year. The industry journals could hard- ly wait to go over the new Porsche with a fine toothcomb. One of the first magazines to publish a driving report was “auto motor und sport”.

The impressions that the journal publis- hed in April 1964 had been gained from a pre-series vehicle, which was still equipped with Solex carburettors from a Lancia. The start of series produc- tion saw the introduction of the Solex triple overflow carburettor specially developed for the 911, which in turn

What did we do on those two days? We drove, ate, drank and had a good time. It was an absolutely fabulous weekend, which was made even better by the knowledge that we were able to bring something very positive into tragic young lives.

A guide told us the history of the four churches that were built successively in Cuxa.

After this visit, our journey through the area around Canigou led to Vernet les Bains. We were applauded as we passed through the snowy village, whose inhabitants clearly appreciated how special a Porsche is. One Boxster needed a push after refuelling because of the snow. “That would never have happened to me in my Carrera 4”, was the owner’s only comment.
