märklin insider news 3.2015 5 EXCLUSIVE FOR INSIDERS IN H0: ET 403/404 AS THE LUFTHANSA AIRPORT EXPRESS Flying on rails In 1982, the class 403/404 became a short-distance airplane on rails. The popular “Donald Duck” in Lufthansa’s company colors with an elegant interior is the second H0 Club model for 2015 – which means only Insiders have access to all DB versions of the class. Start and finish: The Lufthansa Airport Express passes through Cologne on its “maiden flight” on March 27, 1982 (left) – on May 23, 1993, the three consists pose together for the last time at the Düsseldorf holding station (top).

he railroad personnel called it “Flipper”, railroad fans used nicknames such as “Donald Duck”, “Schienenhecht” (rail pike), or “Weisser Hai” (great white shark) – all referring to the “Lufthan- sa Airport Express” based on three IC consists of the class 403/404 electric rail car train, which became a railroad sensation in 1982. Painted in TLufthansa colors and bearing the flying crane logo, the chartered express trains were introduced on four daily shuttle services for flight passengers between Düsseldorf and /Main air- ports. “As a result, Lufthansa replaced an unprofitable internal flight connection with one round trip using two trains and a spare consist,” says Märklin documentarist Thomas Landwehr, explaining the background to the service that was offered from March 27, 1982 until May 23, 1993. “The concept saw powered rail car trains introduce typical Lufthansa flair to the rails – fast, luxurious, and exclusive.”

Class 403/404: Not even flying is better In fact, the aerodynamically designed express powered rail car trains proved the ideal alternative for aircraft passengers of the 1980s, when pampering was still the norm, as railroad historian Thomas Landwehr explains: “First class seats were reserved for pas- sengers with aircraft tickets. Each row of seats in the open seating car had its own window. Passengers were attended to by Lufthansa personnel who served aircraft meals from the galleys, and the seats could be turned to face the direction of travel.” What made the Lufthansa Airport Express even more popular with non-German passengers was the romantic route along the Middle Rhine.

“Celebrated as a technological showcase, the ET 403/404 with the Lufthansa color scheme was certainly one of the most striking powered rail car trains of the 1980s,” says Karl-Heinz Grässle, Product Manager H0 at Märklin, citing one reason why the “Donald” was chosen as the second exclusive H0 Club model for 2015. “In the survey conducted among Club members regarding their preferred model, Intercity version of the ET 403/404 came ➞ DETAIL

For example, an mfx+ digital decoder opens up the popular Märklin world of play for the “aircraft on rails”.

Club model 2015 is authentic both inside and out “We have also adapted the interior fittings of the four cars to the Lufthansa Airport Express prototype,” reports Märklin design engineer Andreas Kobbe. “For the Airport Express, we revised the dining cars, open seating cars, and end cars. Consequently, the model now includes a baggage compartment and stowage ar- eas, the galleys for the supply containers with meals – everything looks as it did in 1982. This also applies both to the switchable table lighting and to the crew cab or the ventilator on an inter- mediate car, which was sealed on the Lufthansa prototype.” To ensure smooth operation, the Club model 2015 is manufactured to the scale length of 1:93.5.

The Lufthansa service marked the beginning of a second career for the three class 403/404 consists. “In its 1979 summer sched- ule, DB introduced its IC concept ‘Every hour, every class’ – which was the end of the road for the single-class 403/404 model,” says Märklin documentarist Thomas Landwehr of the train’s impending doom.
