John Kavulich, senior policy adviser [corrected president] at the U.S.-Cuba Trade & Economic Council, told Inside U.S. Trade that despite constant pressure from the business community, the Obama Administration, in these regulatory changes, did not make meaningful progress on several key business priorities. During an Oct. 14 conference call on the regulatory changes, a senior administration official said “we're mindful of the clock. And this is certainly likely the last significant tranche of changes. But there are always additional refinements that we can do to our policies, as my Treasury and Commerce colleagues know well." For Kavulich, that is something that “is not what the United States business community wants to hear.” Similarly, attorney and Cuba analyst Robert Muse describes the latest regulatory changes as short of what was expected and lacking significance overall. The business community’s top four priorities, according to Kavulich, are: expanding imports of Cuban agriculture products; substantive options to expand U.S.

If that is your desire, I’d like to weld you together and join you into something whole, so that the two of you are made into one. Look at your love and see if this is what you desire: wouldn’t this be all that you want?’ No one, apparently, would think that mere sex is the reason each lover takes such deep joy in being with the other. The soul of each lover apparently longs for something else, but cannot say what it is. The beloved holds out the promise of something beyond itself, but that something lovers are unable to name.1 Hephaestus’ question is a pressing one.

In the Frogs, Aristophanes gives to the god of theater the initiative of a trip, during which Dionysus faces a permanent problem of identity: who is this Dionysus looking for the power that a poet's resurrection represents? The question about Dionysus’ identity doesn’t find an answer within the play; it also puts under discussion the ambiguity of the god and his cult. The ritual allows changes on normal life: sexual order and social hierarchy may be subverted as part of a festival, where subversion and questioning are a priority. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: culto dionisíaco, catábase, viagem. KEYWORDS: cult of Dionysus, katabasis, travel.

  • Obdrzalek, Moral Transformation and the Love of Beauty In
[Penultimate draft; Journal of the History of Philosophy, 2010 (Vol. 48), 415-44] Moral Transformation and the Love of Beauty in Plato's Symposium Suzanne Obdrzalek 1. Introduction On the day Eros was conceived, the gods were having a party to celebrate the birth of Aphrodite. His father-to-be, Poros (resource), was having a grand old time, and in fact got so carried away with the nectar that he passed out cold in Zeus’ garden. His mother-to-be, Penia (poverty), had not made the guest list, and was skulking around the gates. She was poor but cunning, and on seeing Poros sprawled on the ground, hatched a plot to relieve her poverty. She would sleep with him—after all, Poros was too drunk to know what was going on—and conceive a child who would enable her to escape her penury. The name of this child was Eros. This is the story of the origins of erōs which Diotima offers in her speech in the Symposium, and on the face of it, Plato couldn’t have come up with a stranger, more startling myth (203b1–204c6). Love, we learn, is born when a scheming, desperate woman who takes advantage of a drunk man who lies passed-out in the dirt. There is no mention of marriage, the wedding-bed, affection, beauty, even lust—no mention of any of the things which one would ordinarily associate with a myth about the origins of love. Plato is focusing on the seamier side of erōs; his myth describes just the sort of sexual encounter which might make a man mistrust erōs, in which a man is seduced by a cunning woman for the sake of profit.

Lamascus A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin December 2010 ABSTRACT LOVE’S LACK: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EROS AND POVERTY IN PLATO’S SYMPOSIUM Lorelle D. Lamascus Marquette University, 2010 This dissertation responds to a long-standing debate among scholars regarding the nature of Platonic Eros and its relation to lack. The more prominent account of Platonic Eros presents the lack of Eros as a deficiency or need experienced by the lover with respect to the object needed, lacked, or desired, so that the nature of Eros is construed as self-interested or acquisitive, subsisting only so long as the lover lacks the beloved object. This dissertation argues that such an interpretation neglects the different senses of lack present in the Symposium and presents an alternative interpretation of Eros based on the Symposium ’s presentation of Eros as the child of Poverty and Resource. Chapter one examines the origin and development of the position that Platonic Eros is acquisitive or egocentric and the influence this has had on subsequent interpretations of Plato’s thought.

Abstract This paper explores the central thesis of the myth presented by Plotinus in his treatise On Love (III, 5 [50] 9, 24-29). Myth is a narrative that divides and deploys over time structures differentiated only by their “rank” or “powers”. First, the myth teaches, and then allows those who have understood it to “recompose” the data scattered through the discourse. The Hesiodic genealogy –Uranus, Kronos, Zeus– corresponds to the three main hypostases –the One, the Intelligence and the Soul. Likewise, the death and later dismemberment of child Dionysus symbolize the multiplicity and impassivity of sensible matter. Keywords: myth; Plotinus; exegesis; Neoplatonism; Dionysus Introduction Plotinus (204/5 – 270 C.E.) is considered first and foremost as an exegete of Plato who introduced profound changes into Platonism, in an age when “novelty” was not valued per se. As Dodds (1960, p. 2) remarks, the essence of Plotinus’ system stems more from the new sense transmitted by the whole to the parts, than in the parts considered separately one from another. However, according to Plotinus, if the truth was discovered long ago, and is deposited in the Hellenic tradition, especially under the authority of Plato’s dialogues, it has still to be clarified, as it was not always clearly stated (ἀναπεπταμένως) (Ennead V 1 [10] 8, 11; see Narbonne, Achard & Ferroni, 2014, p.
