I focus on narratives involving powerful female protagonists and explore the ways in which storytelling can represent a negotiation of power in informants' lives. Taking a feminist and performance-centered approach, I analyze informants' perceptions of power and gender dynamics in their own lives and the lives of the iconic characters discussed. Analysis is based upon participant- observation, in-depth interviews, casual conversations, popular culture artifacts, and library and archival research. My research indicates that prose narratives are popular and discussed frequently among the communities I interacted with. Female icons function to shape virtuous feminine behavior and chastise immoral behaviors. Although I analyze the narratives themselves, my major focus is the function of casual storytelling. My research investigates three popular Mexican legends: La Llorona, la Virgen de Guadalupe, and la Malinche. La Llorona is the legend of the weeping woman who murdered her children. The legend of la Virgen is the narrative of a Marian apparition that began the national worship of la Virgen de Guadalupe in Mexico. La Malinche was the slave of Spanish conquistador Hernan Córtes, who bore his child, creating the first Mestizo Mexican. Each of these narratives personifies a powerful woman, and storytelling about these characters can represent a negotiation of power in the teller‟s life. La Llorona, la Virgen de Guadalupe, and la Malinche are iconic figures in Mexico, and they are found in oral tradition, literature, art, and popular culture. Not only are they discussed in conversation and used as moral examples, they are also widely disseminated in entertainment forms. They are ubiquitous in corridos (folk songs), ceramic art, outdoor murals, T-shirts, bumper stickers, novels, and paintings. As icons, they represent parts of national Mexico, and they are used by various political groups to express different ideas. They are also common in family conversation, and in legend and joke telling. My fieldwork took place in Oaxaca, Mexico as well as Eugene, Oregon. I spoke with ten women of different ages, ethnic identities, socio-economic levels, and from different regions in an effort to compare and contrast their experiences with popular 1 Mexican narratives. This thesis explores how Mexican and Mexican-American women build community, form multiple identities, and communicate about power and gender dynamics through casual storytelling. My findings show that many narratives are well known and used frequently in daily life. Narratives position strong woman characters as virtuous or evil through moral choices and outcomes. In casual storytelling, Mexican and Mexican-American women emphasize moral behavior, explore personalities as three- dimensional and complex, and use stories as object lessons for children, other women, and sometimes men. Narratives involving evil or neglectful female characters are also occasionally re-told in a women-centric, positive way. Theoretical

    religions Article Christ in Yaqui Garb: Teresa Urrea’s Christian Theology and Ethic Ryan Ramsey Religion Department, Baylor University, Waco, TX 76706, USA; [email protected] Abstract: A healer, Mexican folk saint, and revolutionary figurehead, Teresa Urrea exhibited a deeply inculturated Christianity. Yet in academic secondary literature and historical fiction that has arisen around Urrea, she is rarely examined as a Christian exemplar. Seen variously as an exemplary feminist, chicana, Yaqui, curandera, and even religious seeker, Urrea’s self-identification with Christ is seldom foregrounded. Yet in a 1900 interview, Urrea makes that relation to Christ explicit. Indeed, in her healing work, she envisioned herself emulating Christ. She understood her abilities to be given by God. She even followed an ethic which she understood to be an emulation of Christ. Closely examining that interview, this essay argues that Urrea’s explicit theology and ethic is, indeed, a deeply indigenized Christianity. It is a Christianity that has attended closely to the religion’s central figure and sought to emulate him. Yet it is also a theology and ethic that emerged from her own social and geographic location and, in particular, the Yaqui social imaginary. Urrea’s theology and ethics—centered on the person of Christ—destabilized the colonial order and forced those who saw her to see Christ in Yaqui, female garb. In languages like Mandarin, coarticulation is strong and results in extensive variation in how tones are produced (Xu, 1994). In languages like Thai, coarticulation is noticeably weaker and does not result in the same degree of tonal overlap (Gandour, Tum- tavitikul, and Satthamnuwong, 1999). Just what accounts for such differences? The current study examines how tones are coarticulated in Itunyoso Triqui (IT), an Oto-Manguean lan- guage with nine lexical tones, across different contexts and speech rates. The findings show that contour tones influence the production of adjacent tones significantly more than level tones do, often resulting in tonal assimilation. Though, the degree of assimilation across contexts was relatively small in comparison to previous work on tonal coarticulation. Tonal dissimilation between the highest and lowest tones in the experiment and F0 range expan- sion during faster speech rate were also observed. These findings suggest that IT speakers actively preserve tonal contrasts in their language in conditions where one would antici- pate the greatest mechanical overlap between tones. The ramifications of this research are discussed in relation to the literature on tone production and perception. This research pre- dicts that tonal languages which more heavily weigh F0 height as a tonal cue undergo less coarticulatory variation than those which weigh F0 slope more heavily.
